so you guys didn't seem to like my last remix, but what do you think of these?
i'm getting the hang of using ableton live now, although it is kind of a hassle to record with because i don't have a sound card (just onboard sound on my motherboard that sort of sucks), but i haven't actually been recording too much stuff. i've been working on finishing up an album of folk songs about various movies, some of which will also have pop remix versions, but that project has sort of stalled.

timbaland ft. nelly furtado and jt - give it to me (iaas mix)
there's probably an extra bass instrument that could stand to go here, but it sounded ok on my headphones.

iaas - intro to d's
this is just a mashup idea i had in my car, the intro to chromeo's new album vs. rich boy's throw some d's.

iaas - get crazy low
this is crazy in love + get low + beat. this is actually pretty old, and i made it mostly in fruityloops, which was pretty much all my old laptop could handle.

iaas - time (tom waits cover)
i'm a little sharp in my singing on this, but i was mainly recording this to test my recording settings in ableton live. the beat is just some spare beat i had unused.

newer acoustic guitar covers
dale gribble experience - fix up, look sharp (dizzee rascal cover)
this is pretty old actually.

dale gribble experience - robotboy (robyn cover)
this is a cover of the original version of robyn's robotboy, not the version of the uk release...i think the uk version is better, but it wasn't out when i recorded this.

dale gribble experience - all valley championship (pop mix)
this is one of the movie song pop remixes i was talking about...try to guess what movie it's about and win a free cookie! it should be pretty obvious from the song title and something in the last verse.

anyway, post music you've made recently, and we can have a critique thread

i don't get why that streets after saints song starts off with a fast guitar riff, then immediately slows down, but other than that i think it's good, albeit not a style of music i listen to very often anymore

Mainly because we're not a very good band.

I always love your stuff (I still listen to the Dale Gribble/Jay-Z remiz you did a couple years back). I'd love to see some original stuff.

Something I recorded for review by my band. It's just a demo, and it really doesn't sound much like the rest of our songs, so that's why they shot me down. It was recorded on my computer and I am not a drummer, but a guitar player. So, the drums are not great. Anyway, here it is:

Most recent thing, I suppose.

btw... my band's page: www.myspace.com/thetroubleclefs

That sounds great, keep it up.

booooo

No idea, but your songs sounds great!

Comment: Sometimes the arrangements are a little too busy, and use too much left-right effects. Maybe you should look for a sparser orchestration, and/or edit the instrument sounds you're using to achieve a more personal sound.

Here's a sample of a track I'm working on right now:
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/5/2/1038954/ertest2.mp3

Still have to adjust the levels, still working on the composition but the structure is done. I was playing with the filters a bit too much as well.

I also have to do some EQ adjustments as I made it with some crappy headphones.

Which is the best free 'music-maker' program?

BUZZ.

It's more powerful than Reason or Logic, but it's very hard for most to use.

You should probably start with Fruity Loops, it's also pretty cheap compared to the other software out there.

You could also try starting out with Trackers. Like ModPlug Tracker.

A couple pieces I did with some friends in my electronic music class:

Part 1- mainly guitar, with effects done in Digital Performer

Part 2- a piece done entirely by working with an old (old) Electrocomp synthesizer (one that's just a box)-

Yeah... I'd sooner get another Les paul if I'm paying that much. Ain't that cool.

You can make some awesome 8-bit-esque sounds on it, though. Really cool if you put in the time (and believe me, this was even without us really knowing how it worked).

Hey, what is your guitar setup?

My guitar was custom made, it has an EMG 89(neck)-85(bridge) set up. The "amp" was an ordinary M Audio Black Box going into my PC. Nothing too fancy, equipment wise!

BTJ: I finally got a chance to listen to your stuff, I really dug your earlier stuff and I dig this stuff too. I agree with your assessment of the first one...could have another layer of bass added to add to a "wall of sound" perhaps.

sheesh I gotta run...want to check all of this stuff out.

What did you use for drums?

I use a plugin called sfz that lets you use soundfonts. Then it's a matter of getting a dry drumkit soundfont and using compression, EQ and reverb to get the sound you want.

This is so ****ing corny and awesome, the picture of you jump kicking into the ocean should have some american flags (yes, I know you're English) I've only listened to the final guitar solo, but it sounds a bit Vai. You got skills though!

Thanks! You have a sharp ear, the song was composed by Vai for the end sequence of Bill and Ted 2 :D

ghst

thanks for the laugh

What d'you use to get that 8-bit sound? I've always used Reason + the scream 4 distortion module, set to digital distortion you can take down the bit rate, which is awesome for making any sound have that 8-bit feel but I kinda want an easier way to just get those stock NES sounds.

I'm bidding on a Nanoloop, but those things are like golddust. I've heard there are some things you can do with fruity loops too?

yea i started working the panning effects out of some of my stuff and i think the end result is better and easier to listen to.

the instrument plugins generally are pretty edited, or at least have a lot of effects on them...some of them are probably presets, just tweaked a bit, then with effects layered on them.

also
that movie song was about karate kid

awhile back i posted some original folk eps i made, one was a 5 song chronicling ww2, and another one was a 5 song ep about john steinbeck's "the pearl", i don't have them uploaded right now, but when i get some more webspace i think i will do post more folky stuff that i've made.

i was planning on fleshing out the ww2 idea into an entire album worth of folk songs, but i want to finish 4-5 more remixes and the album of movie songs first.

thanks dude...i think this is sort of funny, because that was the first remix i made, and people still seem to like it the most. it seems like a lot of my music that i end up proud of and liking, everybody hates, and other stuff people love.

Just got back from the studio... so I got some new tracks. These are actually the rough tracks taken out of the studio and we are back in this Tuesday. Anyway, we have two songs posted up that need some minor tweaks. So you guys should listen and if you come up with any production suggestions, let me know.

www.myspace.com/thetroubleclefs ("Greensky Godzilla" and "Slowgun Assassin" are the new ones.

Made these a while ago: http://valueneutral.com/ninevolt/

Guess you would call it a school project, performed them (and a few others) live and used cameras to turn audience movement into audio effects.

Have some more that aren't recorded out linearly, but set up in Ableton so I can play around with them every now and then.
