Post The Most Expensive Games You've Shelled Out For

Street Fighter II for SNES at 99.99 canadian.. I searched everywhere for that game, and found it at its most expensive..

Pretty much all Neo-Geo AES carts for me; I bought almost every release from around summer 1998-December 2003, and prices kept going up, so the most expensive were the following; prices are estimates...might have been a little less or a little more:

-Samurai Shodown V ($350)
-SNK Vs. Capcom: SvC Chaos ($350)
-Power Instinct Matrimelee ($335)
-Rage of The Dragons ($325)

SS5 and SvC Chaos were murder on my wallet, since both were released within weeks of each other. I remember reading that SvC Chaos was priced at $350 (price hike over other carts) because of licensing issues with Capcom or something like that, but that was all bullshit, since SS5 also ended up selling for the same price shortly after.

...I really don't want to even think about how much money I spent on carts over the 5+ years I was buying them. :lol I did sell most of them wheever a port would come out for about as much as paid for them, though. I never could bring myself to spend that much money (or more) on used "rare" carts, however. Made me glad I bought games like Garou MOTW when they were new. I've since them sold off the vast majority of my games...emulation is the way I go now; these games look better filtered in 480p via my modded Xbox than they ever did with the Neo-Geo S-Video mod. What really made me quit buying them was rom releases, though. I felt really stupid spending $350+ on a game, only to have it playable on my Xbox BEFORE the game even arrived at my doorstep. And then SNK released the PS2 version about a month after the AES release, which got added effects.

I still buy all the ports as they are released to show my support, and SNK's ports keep getting better and better to the point that I now prefer most new releases over the original versions.

Other stuff I can remember:

-Supergun w/ Street Fighter III 2nd Impact ($350 or so back in summer '99)
-Panorama Cotton for the Sega Megadrive ($175 in Japan. Sold on eBay for $325. :D)

Besides like the space it takes up, I've never understood why anyone would collect AES carts when you can get MVS carts for so much cheaper.

If you're a collector, then AES is the only way to go. Prices go UP on AES carts. MVS games generally aren't worth squat after a while. I would have gone MVS if the Phantom-1 converter had been released years back, but also I'm an impatient gamer. You may think $300+ is a lot for a game, but considering that these were brand new ARCADE games, that's pretty cheap. The MVS games would sell for $1,000+ when they first came out, and wouldn't drop to below AES levels for months after the AES carts had been out.

I still have a modded AES sytem with some of the older games. I can never get rid of Samurai Shodown II, Real Bout 2, and KOF '98. :D

Oh, ok. Makes sense then. I just assumed they were always about the same. I just got a MVS last year and was pretty shocked at how cheap the carts are. I was able to get old stuff like the Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting games for 10 dollars each and even new stuff like Shodown V is only 100 or so.

Lemme think...

Probably DOA XBV the first day it came out in Japan was 7900 yen...haha I'm such a tool.

That and my VF2 PCB, which was $100.

Sakura Taisen 3 LE - $108 ("retail" price)

That's the most expensive game I bought, but really... I don't think I overpaid for any games I bought. I'm used to paying $65 for imports, and when I do have to pay more than MSRP (rarely), I don't pay more than $5-10 over retail.

Picked up PDS for $60, Radiant Silvergun for $40, etc.

For me, it would have to be PS2 Drummania (game and controller), JY12800 on launch day. Later on, shipped the controller home surface (with some other stuff, ran about JY10000 total, with maybe 2000-3000 of that for the controller) and it never arrived. Had to order a 3rd party drum controller and ship it to the states from Hong Kong, which ran me about $70. So, all told, that's about $220-230ish, or $300 if you count the full cost of the lost shipment. And of course, the 3rd party controller sucks.

Second place would be Final Fantasy I+II (Famicom), boxed/complete for JY9800.

SF2 Turbo SNES, it was like $70 for the cart.

I was just about to say that. I preordered it from Chips and Bits, I think. Or maybe some other mail order outfit, anyway, even after a $5 coupon, with shipping and tax it was over 70. It arrived the very day it came out, though. I remember I was on a camping trip, and I wanted nothing but to get home so I could play that game.

Revenge of Shinobi (Genesis): $90 (got raped at a local shop because he knew all the chain stores were sold out :D)

Phantasy Star 2 (Genesis): ~$90 (I think it was like $87 pre-tax)

Towards the middle and end of the 16-bit generation and beyond, games were really a lot cheaper than previously, though the above two examples were certainly outliers.

I never paid this much for any of these games, but for the U.S., I remember seeing Final Fantasy III, Phantasy Star IV, Chrono Trigger, and Virtua Racing all selling for $99.99.

I bought Doom 3 (U.S.) for $80+ last summer. I was in Tokyo and had to pay import prices!

$120 for Tekken 2 JPN version, about the same for Dracula X (PCE).

:lol I remember the infamous import Tekken 2 price hike. All the import stores raised their prices, claiming a shortage. I don't remember that ever happening again.

$123.45 for Dragonball GT US (long story, but it was worth it even though the game is ass).

$68 for Dragon Force.

And lots of $60 import purchases.

/me shrug

Probably the dumbest game purchase I ever made, I think in 1992 - $150 bucks for Ranma part 3 on PC Engine (the fighting one) - traded in a number of cool titles for it, amongst which were It Came From the Desert (Not an awesome game but a really bemusing piece of gaming history, I think) Splatterhouse (A game which I adore to this day- when it came out for TG16 I remember paying with a lot of change at the counter. I can't believe I was so blind by my want of this game I traded it in to get credit) and a stack of other hu-cards.

Even though I was happy with it (and it still has pretty cool cinemas to this day) that began my life-long vow to never trade or sell my games. Luckily the games I traded are not rare and can be gotten easily again (I have re-acquired some of them since)

Sometime later I spent $70 on a US copy of Legend of Oasis. Also a cool game, but at the time 70 bucks was an import price and seemed like an insane amount to spend on a game released here.

Smarter purchases of mine:

Radiant Silvergun - Brand new, $60 bucks years after release, an amazing feat.
Pac-Man Vs. - Free! The guys at the local Gamestop thought that the "Full Game was out"
and gave it to me free without any kind of pre-order bullshit whatsover.

I would list Drac X for PCE but I didn't get a great deal on it, something like 70 bucks or
so. The smart thing I did was to buy it brand new when it came out. :)

Radiant Silvergun for $140 (complete with spine card and reg card)
Dracula X for $120 (complete with spine card)
FFIII for $80
Seiken Densetsu 3 for $80

The Ys games I got pretty cheaply at the beginning of this year - $20 for the Book I and II, $20 for the third one, and $35 (after shipping) for the 4th one.

Dead or Alive Ultimate - $90
MGS3 LE - $130
Steel Battalion - $200

Although if you count accesories, most of the gun games + guns, driving games + wheels, flight games + sticks where pretty expensive.

120 bucks for an imported Tobal No. 1....and that was just to obtain the Final Fantasy VII demo. So sad. :lol

$80 for Lunar: SSS Complete (this was about 90% of my first paycheck ever)...only to beat it completely in a week. I was a sad Belgurdo when I traded it in ;_;

Then I did it again for Lunar 2 (which I didn't finish and sold a month later) and Arc the Lad Collection (which I quickly surmised was garbage) ;_; ;_;

$50 for Mario Kart Double Dash just to play the Sonic Heroes demo (hated MK and ended getting back most of my cash by Ebaying it)

100 bones for Genesis Virtua Racing, plus all the obvious third-party SNES carts...nothing else above $70 really, but boy I'd like to be a hardcore TG collector

$75 for Guardian Heroes (okay), Dragon Force $70 or so (sucks), Marvel vs. SF $60-65 during a period of time when it was hard to get (best game on saturn)

Most others I haven't gone over $60. Well, I think ATLC was $70. God what a piece of shit that was, THANKS A LOT VIC. Okay, it's not your fault, it's the developer's fault, but still!

$125 for Mortal Kombat II on PSX, which is about the normal price that goes for.

I have a bunch of arcade games that where $500+, the most costly being Killer Instinct 2 which was about 700 I think.

Holy crap, MK2 is worth that much? I paid like $25 for mine at a local game store (it was a branch of a Japanese game store, which meant their used stuff is in pristine condition)

I don't think I've spent more than $400 for an arcade board, I paid about that to get CPS2 Eco Fighters, and I think I paid around $350 for Xexex (overpaid, but oh well)...usually I wait until it's at most $150 (and usually less) before I pull the trigger.

Like lots of other people in here, I picked up Steel Batallion for $200...I remember getting scalped for import SNES SF2, back in the day. I think I paid $150. I then bent over and took it again the following year, I think I paid $125 for SNES SF2 Turbo. Good thing SSF2 wasn't that popular, I got it for $90 when that came out :p

Damn, I forgot about Drummania, I bought that too :p 12800Y, plus like 7000Y just to ship the damn thing to the US. Ouch.

I remember getting gouged for my Asian DC, now that I think about it. Does that count? I paid something like $400-500 and had to take three of the four shittastic launch games...I skipped July and ended up with Godzilla, VF3tb, and Pen Pen. I don't think I ever opened my copy of Godzilla...

come to think of it, i paid some absurd price for the japanese version of hotd2 + gun at some import store near times square, just when it came out. don't remember the exact price, but it was more than $100.

I spent $75 on SNES Street Fighter II. I spent 450 on a 3DO, and 500 on an import DC. That's the most i have ever spent on videogame equipment.

Virtua Racing (Sega Genesis): $104.99 after tax

Stupid SVP chip.

This is also my entry, except I think it was closer to $109. And I lost the damn cartridge!

Other than that, I've never paid more than $50 + tax for a video game.

I would argue the opposite - if you're a collector that plays their games, you buy MVS. You wait until the game isn't worth squat, then you pick them up :)

Buying games speculatively is a hit and miss affair - you'd be better off investing your money elsewhere if you are expecting your video game collection to appreciate.

$85.00 for Street Fighter 2 SNES at KB Toys when it first came out. I also paid another $70 for that piece of shit Capcom Fighter Power Stick to use with SF2 if you want to factor that into the equation.

Of course, for Neo Geo AES :

Garou : Mark of the Wolves JPN (360$)
Sengoku 3 USA (190$)
Metal Slug 3 JPN (475$)
Metal Slug 4 JPN (435$)
Metal Slug 5 JPN (475$)
Last Blade JPN (190$)

For "normal" consoles, I had Guardian Heroes before that cost me 75$ CAD, and Puyo Pop Fever for DS JPN for 49,99$ USD.

When SuperMarioBros 2 first came out, my dad bought 2 copies for $99, which was what everyone was selling it for around here.

Did you guys hating on ATLC just play 1 and 3 and totally skip out on 2?

Played all three; beat the first in three days, the second one got repetitive halfway through (my "strategy" pretty much consisted of letting Shu and Tosh rush ahead and kill everything), and played 3 for five hours before putting away due to boredom

Collectors buy their games to see them go up in value or go after the rare stuff. That's not MVS. :) If you're actually PLAYING your games, you're a gamer. Collectors are the guys that can't even beat the first stage in Metal Slug or the first CPU character on one-star difficulty in Garou MOTW.

I know a guy that used to LAUGH at me years ago because he thought I was dumb for spending several hundred bucks on Neo-Geo games. (The same guy spent $900 on a Japanese PSX and In The Hunt, but that's another story) He ended up becoming a Neo-Geo collector, buying not one, but TWO copies of all new games released. He'd come in raving about new games like Garou for months, and one day, came into work and asked me to show him how to do break moves in Garou. I had to laugh because he said he played it all the time, but didn't even know what the break system was. :lol

Bemani is totally ridiculous-

PNM ASC: $400
IIDX ASC: $500
DM Controller: $175
KBM Controller: $100
Para Para Paradise: $150

...and that's just to play the games that easily run $70-80 each!

I dunno - I say if you're collecting because you want your games to appreciate, send me the money, I can probably get you a better return on your investment.

I can see going after rare stuff, because the AES stuff is rarer. But it's also generally inferior and way more expensive than the MVS cart - you're basically paying for the nice box and instruction manual. If you don't need to play it immediately after it comes out, then MVS is really the only way to go if you have a way to play MVS games...

I would imagine that some collectors aim for completeness - for them, it makes more sense to buy 8 MVS games at $50 each rather than 1 AES game at $400...

I never payed more than $60 for an individual game... if you mean game+peripheral (like DDR or something) it's a little more. But nothing over $100, even so.

I imported FFVIII back when the dollar was actually worth something, so it cost me about 70 quid I think. That's about 14000 yen now. Also got the R4 bundle with JogCon for about the same. RSG and Rainbow Islands Extra are a little bit behind.

Back in the day I dropped like $70-80 on Killer Instinct for SNES. It was the first game I bought with my own money and I played the crap out of it... and the killer cuts CD that came with it!

549 "francs" (so today, it should be around 83 euros) for Conker's Bad Fur Day on N64, mainly because Nintendo refused to publish it in France, probably fearing well-thinking associations' wrath and generic rage. Then, THQ brought it untranslated, but in very small and very expensive quantities.
