Hey Doom, those PC games just aren't going to fly at a perfect 60 fps on ANY machine. Even Contracts slows down a whole lot when bloom lighting is enabled.

dark10x said:Err, Halo 1 was one of the first FPS titles to make EXTENSIVE use of bumpmaps. There is perpixel lighting everywhere in that game. Halo 1 uses better bumpmaps than Halo 2 on the environment, even...

I finished Halo 1 right after finishing Halo 2, maybe you need a memory refresh yourself..

The End said:man, you are high as hell if you think Hitman Contracts can hold a candle to Rez.
Doom_Bringer said:Batshit, Hitman Contracts is one of the best looking games out there! It looks much better than Rez and ico
Doom 3 ran at 40 - 60 FPS on my PC. Hitman Contracts has an awesome engine and it runs at high frame rates. Sadly I don't have those games anymore and the screens are from last summer.
I would take shots from HL2 but it takes a long time to get to the museum (the strider battle area)
PS2 games just run at crap frame rates.
Look at MGS3, go into any gun fight in FPS and the screen just starts to tear and the frame rate drop. Same thing with Zone of the Enders 2nd Runner.
Doom_Bringer said:argh I don't know what people see in Rez, it looks like a stupid game running on wireframes instead of polygons.
also, Cosmic Smash is the best possible looking version of Breakout.
dark10x said:MGS3 and ZOE2, sure, but that hardly represents the whole library. I own over 100 PS2 titles, and having looked over them, 75% of them ran at 60 fps (and that's a near constant 60 fps). You're being way too narrow minded here.
Contracts absolutely did not run at 60 fps on your machine with post filtering enabled. It is completely, 100% impossible. If you disable those effects, it has no trouble holding 60, though (but the visuals look much worse). Your Doom 3 estimate is VERY conservative, because you are clearly forgetting areas where it drops below 30 (and I'd bet money it did).
The point is, you are being extremely forgiving on the PC side and UTLRA harsh on the PS2 side. Pick a stance and stick with it.
If this is high quality surface texture, then I must see an opthalmologist.
Doom3 is nowhere near stable framerate even on a 6800GT, don't go telling me that a 9800 runs it so smooth that a selfprophesed slowdown hater like yourself thinks it's perfectly stable while at the same time complaining about slowdowns in something like Burnout 3.I fucking hate slowdown and thats one of the main reason why I bought Radeon 9800 Pro.
Side by side to SH3 in the same resolution, D3 usually ends up looking worse.Alright.. This is the last post I'll make on this thread. I made this wallpaper for myself a while back. Take a look at this in-game screenshot and tell me your PS2 games still look good.

dark10x said:MGS2 runs at 60 fps 95% of the time. If you're upset about that, I'm suprised you found those PC games even remotely playable cuz' I know MGS2 ran better than, say, Doom 3 on your PC (much better).

I don't know where you are going with the whole "my pc couldn't handle that game" argument, because I played and beat Doom 3 and Hitman Contracts on my PC multiple times and the frame rate was really good.

Once the technology becomes dated on those newer PC games, they just aren't going to look all that hot anymore. However, great art direction can overcome technical limitations and produce something that will remain beautiful for ages.

Ico doesn't look anywhere near that good in reality, though. These high-res screenshots are deceptive.

dark10x said:There is a world of difference between a render and a doctored screen. That ICO shot is no different than the high-res Ninja Gaiden shots that Team Ninja distributed. I don't think there is a world of difference between the two at all, though. Resolution is the only real difference.
However, this was in response to a guy that was also being rather dishonest. Those Halo 1 pics he posted were not accurate representations of the game. He posted a shot from a build that was never released, for example.

Just curious, would you consider ICO "good technical work" if it ran at higher resolution?I dunno, I think Ico will look crappy when games with similar art + good technical work come along...
i can confirm both points. and using the zoom function, you'll notice a bit of aliasing too..Teddman said:RE4 supposedly shows heavy dithering in pro-scan and has faked widescreen.
