The name Light is perfect for a spoiled upper-middle class latchkey kid.

Deliberately swapping up the ethnicity on the leads makes sense, if only to make it distinct when it's on Netflix and such.

I think the best thing they should do is root in Judeo-Christian beliefs and call them Angels of Death, and relate them to the Angel that performed the tenth plague on Egypt and killed every Egyptians first born including Pharaoh's by writing their names in his/her notebook.

I've been feeling like they're going to go this route and maybe play up the apple symbolism a little bit more. It will be interesting to see what they do with Ryuk's design since I don't think they'll keep the original. It looked kind of silly in CGI. I'm just expecting him to look like a Nazgul.

He'll have to be a jock too. Smart kids aren't popular in American schools like in Japan.
This made me think
They will find some way to add bullies at movie no? American writers don't know how to make a story with high school characters without adding some kind of bully subplot

how are they planning on fitting the entirety of death note into a movie

By having fuck all to do with the original outside of the most basic of summaries, of course.

Really, though, it probably isn't adapting the whole thing. It'll end on a sequel hook, like Dragonball Evolution. Yes, that example was intentional.

oh there'll most definitely be a Biff or a Chet. It's mandatory in American high school movies.

the japanese movies were ok but the live action tv show was atrocious. anyway ip should theoretically transfer well to a western adaption but I'm sure they'll ruin it somehow anyway.

Why would it have to be cast with Japanese actors? Why couldn't it just be that a Japanese actor did the best job in the role, and got the job? Just saying, it sounds to me like the casting was motivated by racism instead of a drive to create good art.

You think Hollywood is meritocracy based and everybody of every race gets a fair opportunity? How cute.

Damn, I didn't even think about relating the apples to the Tree of Knowledge and Adam and Eve. That would be good, and yeah there's no way they're using a punk rock/freak design for them. LOL I'd personally go the androgynous route and cast Tilda Swinton.

The weird thing is there are TWO live action Death Note movies in production right now. There's actually a weird sequel to the Kaneko films coming out this year with a mostly original plot. This is the updated Ryuk they're using in that one:

Well since "Mia's" in it but there's no indication that Near is, they might be skipping over or speeding up events to end it at
L's death
or they could just be making up a new story or something.

Oh, so what you're saying is
they just cast a black guy as L so they could kill him!

"Hey dork, what are you looking at..."
"Hey, that's mine"
"Aw look, dork has a notebook. What is it for? Algebra? it's not like you're getting any numbe- ARGH! ARGHRRH!!!!"
"Yo, Brock what happened", "Yeah what happened dude"
"Gh- ghos- " *runs*
"What's up with Brock man?", "Yo, let's go check on him" *runs*
"... I think he saw you, Rook"
"What do we do now?"
"Kill him"
"Ok, apples apples"

Death note has the best chance of turning westerners into fans of japanese entertainment, I know alot of people that dislike anime but liked Death Note alot. If done correctly a TV series could be huge in the west, making it into a movie pretty much kills any chance of it actually being good and it wont be able to recover.

What are you talking about? Have a normal discussion like a normal person and respond to what I said, not what you've decided I said. I am complaining THAT Death Note's casting directors are being racist. In response, you've essentially handwaved their actions and made excuses for it. "It'd be weird to have all of the actors be Japanese in a western setting", pointing out how we've had two Japanese adaptations already (would it be unacceptable for you if those adaptations didn't exist?).

All I'm hoping for is that this movie turns out to be utter trash so that maybe they stop deciding to believe the lie that white people need to be the leads in movies.

It's questionable whether an American adaptation is a good idea in the first place, or whether this one will be any good at all, and Nat Wolff doesn't seem to be good looking enough for the part, but this is one case where I think race really does matter in the casting.

If you make Light something other than the privileged establishment it changes the story in ways that I don't think would work, regarding his ability to get away with things, our ability to hate him, his high level connections, etc.

Y'know what, I apologize. I didn't mean to come across rude, and want to emphasize that I agree and want more Asian American representation, but was trying to explain why it's going to be hard to change that.

Yeah, no problem. Sorry that I snapped back too much. I know that it probably won't change for a while, but it helps just a bit to affect a movie on an individual basis to make a point of calling it out. I mean, while The Last Airbender was so focused upon for being downright awful, the whitewashing of its cast was a big headline that attracted some extra negative attention.

I'm guessing the Shinigami aren't in the movie and he'll just find the Death Note without Ryuk existing.

This is known to have been the plan at one point. When Shane Black signed on he wanted "the demon" to be added back in. It's unknown what Ryuk's status is in the current version.

Really not fond of the names, but oh well.

Like the casting for L though, he looks skinny enough to play the part.

Man, I gotta rewatch or something. I forgot about the tennis, porn, potato chips, etc.

... HOW?! I can maybe see forgetting about the tennis, the porn probably should have been remembered, but the potato chip scene was so integral to the plot the Japanese films actually adapted it pretty faithfully. He took that potato chip and ATE IT, man. He ate that potato chip with a burning passion for potato chips.

I'm fine with this.

There's clearly no requirement for them to treat the source material as gospel. If they want to change the locale and the race of the main characters, that's their call. In the end, they're out to make money, and an all-Japanese cast is not going to make them more money. The demographic that wants this to happen already has a live-action adaptation that they've likely already watched.

In the end, this isn't going to be a retread of the original story that already exists in manga, anime, and live action forms, and that's the way it should be. I'm mildly curious how this new story will develop.

Well L wasn't Asian to begin with, but yeah wtf at not looking at asians actors at all for Light.

Bruh, y'know you shouldn't be surprised at that. LOL

We Gucci, it's just Hollywood is a white elitist industry that's invested in, developing, and capitalizing on White stars. Other races that become movie stars are the exceptions, and often times they were stars in other artistic mediums before Hollywood gave them a chance or in their own films outside of their system.

For what its worth, I didn't like any of the parts that involved them anyways, so I'm okay with them being removed.

There's like nothing in Death Note that particularly requires Asian actors or an Asian setting. If you're asking yourself why they don't hire a fully Japanese cast and set it in Japan, you're confused about why and how there's a localized production of Death Note.

An example of a work where it would actually matter would be something like Monster, because the main character being a "stranger in a foreign land" is critical to the plot.

Honestly though, an American being in Germany would work just as well.

I'm actually kinda optimistic about this. Wondering how far they will take the tone, as if whether they will talk Shinigami's (or death gods, for this adaptation).

Ho boy. I thought Light Turner was the original name they changed to something else because of how ridiculous it sounds.

No it wouldn't.

The point of the plot is that he's a famous Asian murder suspect fleeing through a relatively racially homogenous country where you don't see a lot of Japanese people wandering around.

Yeah, Monster has very specific racial requirements in its casting due to the time period and story. It's not a universal story where you can change the surface veneer.
