PS Vita TV coming to West as Playstation TV, $99

Been waiting on this to go in my other room to play PS4 when wife has friends in :-)

Think this is a great device - the Vita games etc are just a bonus so I can see why they changed the name - I'm sure more people will use this for Remote PS4 play or PS Now PS3 titles

I had to buy an HDMI splitter :\

Warning to those who plan to use one though: the Vita TV does a poll like every 15 minutes when it's in standby. I think this has gotten fixed recently, but before it would cause my splitter to go back to the Vita TV every time it woke up.
Yeah, I am thinking I am going to spring on an IR controlled HDMI splitter and let my Harmony remote take care of the rest.

And I do hope that polling gets fixed in firmware. That seems like an awful problem to have!

I had that issue back in the autumn. Was playing gran turismo on my ps3 and it would constantly switch mid race, lol. Not had any problems since though.

I find this fascinating. I have always felt that there was a sleeper market for micro consoles.

My wife doesn't really play video games but she instantly got it. "A $99 media streaming box that can download/play PlayStation games? Let's get it."
I was surprised at the reaction. I was hoping for an announcement, didn't expect everyone else to go nuts. There were probably 80 people playing their Vitas though, so there's that. Actually, that many people with Vitas was probably more surprising. Pretty awesome though, wish I had brought mine, people were playing co-op stuff, wish I would have gotten some PSN IDs for BL2.

I need to get a power line adapter so that I don't have to use this over wifi. RemotePlay over wifi locally is such shit when anyone else is using the wifi.

Does it have 1080p netflix output? If it does I'll end up getting one. If not I'll just wait for the PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility for PS4.
1080p Netflix/media output isn't actually as important as you'd think, other than on some older model TV's.

The important question is whether it is actually receiving a 1080i signal and passing it, or more likely receiving 1080p content and interlacing it. With a fixed pixel display, its deinterlacer can reconstruct the original video from a 1080i60 signal because traditional content is at 30fps or less. So really the only serious issue is if it is only supports a 720p stream in its framebuffer.

*There are some early 1080p TV's that had shit de-interlacers. So yes, if your TV has poor video processing you could see problems. Thankfully even with most of those it was video deinterlacing, not film cadence deinterlacing, that generally caused the most problems. Most content on Netflix is 'film based', and that includes TV shows.

Thankfully decent deinterlacing has been commodity level for a while. Granted, I'd still rather have native 1080p, but for the most part people will be okay. Particularly which the percentage of film cadence material here.

That said ... if you're an anime fan ... hold yo' butt unless you have a display with good deinterlacing.

I think the big question here is whether or not Sony will make a big push for local content providers now that it's coming to other regions.

There's a lot of competition among streamers in the price range. Obviously its Playstation support is a huge pro when people are doing a comparison, but if it doesn't cover the bases in terms of content providers ... it could be a deal breaker. My hope is we at least get something close to PS3 in terms of providers. That would check the right boxes for the majority of people. Granted I suppose you could remote play them from PS4, but I'd certainly rather have native access to media.

I'd absolutely love if they added DIAL support to this, PS3, and PS4. That would be a nice plus.

Can you use a Dualshock 4 on Vita TV?
forgive my ignorance.
I believe yes

It's a nice change of pace to hear about a TV game console (from Sony no less) where people aren't bitching and whining that their eyes are going to bleed when everything is rendered sub-1080p.

MS really should get the 360 down to $149.99 MSRP, especially with all the stuff that just came out from behind the paywall.

Thinking more, I wonder if the reason why they're not dropping the price of the PS3 is because they want to push PSTV+PSNow instead?

Well, at least I was right that they would drop the Vita name?

Still glad this is coming over, but in the interim I have bought an Apple TV for all my streaming and airplaying, so don't know if I really want this. I've had the ability to play PSP games on my TV for years, and never did it.

I'm going to be using this as much to play PS4 games as to play PSN games. I still think they'll let us connect a DS4 to it and that would fix a lot of the vita touchscreen compatibility.

I guess they need to sell out old Vita 1000 parts, but why brag about the 720p/1080i and 30hz streaming? For those who don't know that means 60fps games with drops will play like 30fps games with drops.

How are they bragging?

Um...they aren't bragging?

Unless you're suggesting that they willingly hide the resolution information from consumers. Which would be extremely shitty.

PS4 streaming is one of the big features, but it is neither full res nor full frame rate. The name makes it sound like a streaming box.

I believe yes

DIAL is only currently supported by Netflix and youtube though, right? And you can 'cast' to the Netflix app on PS3 and I guess PS4 (can't remember if I've tested it).

It would be good though, and be a neat way to not require huge numbers of apps and still get decent streaming support.

I'm still gonna call it PS Vita TV 'cause I'm living in denial.

It's great it will finally come to the west.

So can I play P4G on my TV with this? Cause I'll buy it just for that. Not kidding.

Most PS2/PS3/PSP ports/remakes will work on Vita TV as long as the developers feel like it's worth patching support in. It's the Vita originals that will be hit or miss. Tearaway is never going to happen, UC:Golden Abyss and KZ:Mercenary could maybe work (hell, UC:GA would be improved by removing the touch screen bullshit,) and Gravity Rush wouldn't take too much effort (just remap the slide controls and take out the "touch boss to do finishing move" gimmick.)

what media apps do you have in the US? Because in the UK I think there is.....nothing. No iplayer/sky/netflix/amazon instant video....nothing.

Yup. As I said earlier in the thread, this isn't going to work as a streaming box in the UK unless they get people on board making apps.

The people behind the BBC iPlayer app were quoted a few months back saying they have no plans to make a Vita app.
