PS1/Saturn/N64 games @60fps (Non-fighting games)

I was having a dorky conversation today, and I brought up the opinion that the 32-bit machines were far too crappy to handle any decent-looking 60fps games that weren't fighters. My friend was like "No, there were lots of 60fps action games!" but then we both realized we couldn't think of any aside from F-Zero on the N64.

Were there any? At all? dark10x you know you want in on this.

I can think of many, but they pretty much were all 2D games. The only non 2D one I can think of is Klonoa. But that one had 2D sprites and 2D-based gameplay, in 3D environments.

Mhhm Resident Evil 1 / 2 / 3, Final Fantasy 7 / 8 / 9 weren't those 60fps aswell? I thought all PS1 games were like 60fps (at least they felt that way compared to 50Hz PAL conversions).

Gran Turismo on PS1?

When you completed the game you get access the special mode. I think you drive alone but it's smooth 60fps and coupled with the realistic suspension GT offered it was at that time heaven.

Drunk much? RE# and FF# 60fps? Nonono. (Though FFX was maybe, don't remember)

edit: Snowboard game in FFVII may possibly have been 60fps but unsure.

Decathlete & Winter Heat Saturn
Just about every 2D game PSX/Saturn and N64
A lot of STV arcade converions to Saturn

The T-rex tech demo on psone seemed really smooth when I first saw it, I no longer have the demo disc it was on so it could have jerked all over the place for what I knew back then, the only 3D thing I saw before that was Stunt Race FX on SNES.:lol

There weren't many besides fighters and 2D games, but from the top of my head (on Playstation): Klonoa, Devil Dice, Kula World/Quest, Final Fantasy Tactics, Motorhead, B-Movie.

I guess the extra modes in Ehrgeiz and Tobal (adventure / sports style stuff) can count as well.

Actually only Decathlete was. WH runs at 30fps.

Team Buddies was 60fps IIRC, so was Wipeout 3 (running at hi-res).
Wip3out was 30fps like the rest of them.

Crime Killer on PS1 was totally 60 FPS. In fact, this was a major part of the advertisements, and I think it may have even been highlighted on the cover. I'm remembering something about driving a car from a first-person perspective and shooting, but that's all I've got.

EDIT:

I'm remembering some...maybe Mass Destruction for the Saturn and PS1, I believe. Also, perhaps, Robo-Pit, Forsaken, and Sonic Jam's 3D overworld.

Nope, that was 30.
Hmmm...weird. There are quite a few games that I think could be 60fps, but they're probably just a nice 'n locked 30. Togue King of Spirits 2 from Cave/Atlus is one and Neon's Tunnel B-1 on the PS1 is another.

On Saturn I played 2D games to an even higher degree than on PS so there's not much to remember... Radiant Silvergun, Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru and the already mentioned Decathlete is all I can come up with.

Man, I would love to see this. Unfortunately, even when I was first playing it, and heavily so, I wasn't that great at it.

There isn't anyway to unlock this is there?

Ohhh, this is a tough one...

Here's my PSX list
---------------------

Klonoa
Crime Killer (bad game, but literally has a "60 fps" sticker on the jewel case)
Devil Dice
Einhander
R-Type Delta
Thunder Force V (PSX + SAT)
Ridge Racer High-spec
Elemental Gearbolt
Motorhead
N2O
RayCrisis & Force
Internal Section

There may be a few others, but at the moment, that's what I can think of. I will do an N64 and Saturn list as well.

People always bring up Wip3out, but the truth is, Wip3out did not run at 60 fps nor use any sort of high resolution mode.

2D games across all systems mostly ran at 60 fps (including those with 3D elements). Also, most RPGs (especially Square titles) used 60 fps elements in various aspects of the games (menus, in particular). Not really 60 fps games, of course, but elements were included. I always found it interesting how the menu in the FF games, for instance, ran at 60 fps even in battle (while the 3D portions were much lower). NiGHTS on Saturn had a similar thing going on, where the 3D portion updated at 30 fps and the 2D backgrounds moved at 60 fps.

As you mentioned F-Zero was one...other games on the 64 with 60 fps hmm....I seem to remind Evangelion and Sin&Punishment both were...but perhaps my memory serves me right.
GT1 - Hi Spec mode is another example on the PSX...And on the Saturn...VF2 was and many 2.5D games were...Soukyugurentai for instance.

Bulk Slash on Saturn was 60, wasn't it? I can't remember properly.

Also on PSX:

RC de Go
RC Helicopter
Power Shovel
G-Darius
1 on 1 and its sequel (import-only basketball games)
Sanvein

I'll probably think of more.

WTF?!?! There was a sequel to 1on1? I LOVE THAT GAME! HOLY SHIT. The spoken Engrish in the first game is among the best ever uttered. What's the name of that sequel?

Actually, I'm not sure if it's a sequel so much as an upgrade, but: Simple 1500 Series Vol. 30: The Basket ~1 on 1 Plus~

It has controls that are a lot easier to deal with and a couple of new characters, but it's missing most of the first game's training and extra modes. I think there's just tournament and versus modes.

Hmm, not sure but I think DDR 5th Mix ran at 60 fps (looks higher than 30 though, but not quite 60 to be honest).

Edit: Also, I'm taking a wild guess here, it's been years since I played it, but what about Intelligent Qube?

Hmm, on second thought, I'm not all that familiar with the Saturn library as a whole, so it's difficult to make any guesses. Not all that familiar with N64 either, actually.

I mean, we know F-Zero X. There is also Super Smash Bros. and Kirby 64. Beyond those, it's difficult to say. I know that Sin & Punishment was NOT 60 fps nor was Eva 64.

Square's Racing Lagoon. A game with some of the best realtime graphics in PSX IMO (Pre-rendered character design was shit Ô.Ô).

Oh, and Soukaigi!. I enjoyed it :)

Btw, it's a pretty decent PSX list right now. We could list even the fighting games, so we can make a complete list of 60fps games...

I think PSX's Tomb Raider [1] was 60 fps too... but I'm not 100% sure.
Nope. The TR games were even locked on the PC, so you couldn't go above 30 fps.

Twisted Metal 2 might of ran at 60
Ignoring the grammar, TM2 didn't even run at 30 fps let alone 60. It was not a smooth game.

There was this racing game called Burning Road that I'm pretty sure was 60fps. It was Japanese and developed by a small French company.

You sure? Because I have just put the cd on my PSX to check it out and turning the camera around really fast it looks clearly above 30fps, if not 60 :S It's really smoother than the saturn version. I'll pass form the first cave to see if there is a drop in the frame rate :)

Yup, it's not 60fps. I've been replaying it on my PS2 and it even has noticeable slowdown below 30fps in many different places, like the Lost Valley (with the T-Rexs) and even the first level.

N64 was just F-Zero X & SSB, there weren't many fighters even if you included them, and the few that it got like MK4, Dual Heroes or War Gods didn't even run at 60 fps :P

PS1 games not mention,
Snowboarding in FFVII
doors in RE2 ;)
think Elemental Gearbolt & Project Horned Owl were 60 fps, gotta check them out again
Devil Dice

Did the side-scrolling 2.5d Kirby N64 game run at 60fps? It seemed unusually smooth if I remember correctly.
Yep, already mentioned it.

Mentioned Gearbolt and DD, but I've never heard of Project Horned Ownl. What exactly is that?

Nope, it maxes out at 30 fps. The Saturn version DOES run slower, but that doesn't mean the PSX version is above 30. The Saturn version runs at sub-30 fps.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily ruin the game or anything. I mean, Zelda OoT is locked at a rocking 20 fps. :P
