PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

I second this. I read some technical explanation about RSS off wikipedia, but I don't understand what this does for PS3. Anyone know?

you can put audio/video(maybe?) podcast or whatever without saving it

Doesn't look too fake. I hate getting my hopes up. :lol

edit: the poster looks pretty trustworthy looking at the post count and his prior posts.

o Support for PLAYSTATION®3 format software titles has been expanded.

My guess is that they will add suport for Playstation Eye or some other silmilar stuff... Guitars, pads, steering wheels...

it means anything you can do on the XMB, you can do while not disrupting your game

so yes, ingame friends list

Right.

Unfortunately this doesn't mean it'll be fleshed out. I wouldn't assume that Live-like functionality will be available from that short blurb. You might not be able to join a friend's game and whatnot... but it seems like messaging will be available, at least.

Interested on confirmation of this update... and then more information on some of these features.

Well, we all knew most of those stuff was coming, it was just a matter of time, so i doubt its fake.

I just find it odd they skipped 1.8 and 1.9

Lack of in-game buddylist messaging has been a serious hurdle when you can see a buddy signing on but you can't in any way get him to pop in the same game you're playing, I think invite is a nice feature but with messaging it will dissolve much of the barrier to communication. I hope this stuff is true...

hopefully you can play music and games at the same time, with XMB overlay. I loved that feature on 360, if I can browse/play games/message all the same time while in game then all my desires will have been fulfilled.

Well they went from 1.1 to 1.3

o [Zero Unused Disk Space] has been added as an option under [System Settings] > [Format Utility].

...what does this do?

It is probably for people running Linux. If you partition a hard drive, put some data on it, then delete that data, normally you cannot repartition that part of the drive. Zeroing out unused data allows you to increase or decrease the size of a Linux partition.

Don't get the wrong impression from my post... I think this is a very positive, helpful update. As you've described, it'll be much better than what's currently available and alleviate a lot of frustration.

But I think it's best not to assume it'll be on par with what's normal on Live atm.

I think this is a step in the right direction and a good thing for Sony. If they come out and have all that functionality... that's fantastic. But I'd rather keep my expectations more realistic to avoid disappointment. I think they'll eventually have all the stuff that you find on Live... but I'm not expecting it all in this update.

With this much stuff in it, this firmware deserves minimum of 2.4, or even 2.6! :D

For 3.0 they need to add PSP remote play for all ps3 games!
And rumble.

That just seems too complete to be true. I mean, it fixes just about everything, doesn't it?

It's damn close.

The only things really left are media features, such as network access, DVD upscaling, and BluRay 720p (and maybe more codec support).

Emulation upgrades? =O

Please be. Please be. Please be.

I'm guessing you can specifiy output resolutions for each system? That way, you don't have to turn every resolution off to get 480i output?

I'm not saying it's going to be like live, and seriously I don't think it needs to be, as long as it allows for enough functionality that brings the community together, as a PS3 owner when I'm using something like this, "stacking up feature for feature with the other console" isn't the foremost on my mind, but rather being able to do what I want to do, ultimately it's more important that it just gets the job done one way or another.

w00000t, wallpapers and XMB access during games. I guess the only thing I want left is the PSP->PS3 any wifi hotspot remote access thing.

Sorry. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth.

Also... in my defense ;P I'm not necessarily thinking about consoles "stacking up" against one another. I was thinking more of people's general expectations that come from having Live as the de facto standard over that last 4 - 5 years.

I don't get into any of that console war crap... I own all the systems.

Would this be the first time they've put a PS3 FW Changelog up on their press site, if it did actually originate from there? Or have they done this with other FW updates as well?

I dont see any of the old ones on that press site. There is a press release about 1.60 tho.

EDIT: Gofreak, you PM box needs some cleaning

Currently, do you get an alert when friends come online, while you're in game?

Yes, and you get an alert whenever someone leaves you a message or when your downloads are finished, but you have to quit the game to see them. :( Thats why everyone's excited for this update.

XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) is now accessible during gameplay.

As I said in another thread, keep in mind that it says "accessible". It could mean you can access the XMB in a "limited" way like you already can during a Video Chat, Web Browsing or Photo Viewing. In these cases, you can do some stuff in multitasking (playing music while browsing or watching photos) but not everything (sending messages while web browsing quits the web browser for example).

If this was JUST xmb in-game I'd be happy.

But...all of this. This is almost too much.

Still, unconfirmed so...won't get too excited....but...

Everything sounds good. Still can't get too excited. I want to be able to play my music while ingame and this hasn't really been confirmed.

I also want to be able to crete folders and sub-folders for my photos.

I don't believe it all!!, the threespeech elaborate rouse about some big update in march didn't take place. As far as I'm concerned the mods should lock this and throw away the key. If you were to bullet point each FW from sony since Nov. '06 you will find that they are small and frequent. As large as this rouse is no matter how cleverly written, screams Bull Shit.

SOny make it happen!!! This is just as big as PSP 2.0 update.

What does that mean?
Must be for d/l games or maybe the PS3eye games. PSP gets these updates when new ps1 games are coming out.

Almost near Live functionality....almost.

This almost seems like a bait post by a particular console fan, but I don't want to be presumptious.

I do agree Sony needs invites but other than that 2.0 seems to address most issues for me. I really like the XMB (navigation, playstation store yes I prefer it to live, video thumbnails, rip CDs). It's still really bare, so I am glad to see this major update. Maybe one day both services will have it all ;). I am sure they'll both always have stuff that the other one doesn't.

Hopefully this week will be a good week for Sony, they have some fantastic titles coming up and now a great XMB update. I went to Best Buy yesterday looking to buy a game and I got God of War 2.

There are just no good PS3 games out at the moment (Motorstorm is too bare bones, and Resistance Fall of Man while really fun and pretty had old gameplay). Games like Warhawk, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, MGS, Ratchet and Clank etc. is what I bought the system for.

Up until now it's been a very expensive PS2 for me.

Except this follows pretty much the same pattern as the PSP.

Since you seem so certain, maybe you should get a little vacation if it turns out to be true?

Indeed. What about HD audio for Bluray movies?

it already handles PCM and dolby true HD fine - it decodes true hd to pcm and sends that over hdmi. the one thing it's missing is decoding DTS HD the same way. (i also hope they add the option to send both dolby true hd and dts hd as a bitstream over hdmi 1.3 for external decoding, just to be thorough).

You are bizarre.

Three-Speech 'speaks' to SCEE. The PS3 was launched in March in Europe and got the 1.70 firmware update at that time.
