PS3 2.0 firmware details posted [confirmed?]

Great update if true, XMB during gameplay is really all I wanted. It pretty much makes it equal to Live in my eyes

I am not sure about it. I don`t know, if it would provide all the XBL functionality. See the posts of recklessmind.
Bit I still hope for it.

The boys & girls @ Sony, have been busy!
If this update is true, and the poster at the original link has a reputation of getting these right,
the PS3 will be very close to the 360 in terms of goodies!
Now bring on Home & P2P!

RSS on the PS3? Fantastic, 1Up Show downloading straight to the console.

I wish Microsoft would get on this trend. It was awesome when I still had my PSP.

You can download 1up now, and it even leaves a 1up pic icon:)

But all that is great, it just needs 720p support thats all.

Wait, there is a .mp4/PS3 version of the 1Up show? Can someone show me where I can find it?

I usually just download the M4V Ipod version posted in the threads straight from the PS3 Browser.

Sounds like some pretty good changes, though I wish they'd add surround sound support to videos in the XMB. Maybe this will be a stealth change.

This is an AWESOME update if true!
Lots and lots of features I will be using.

I'm thankful for the improved fast forward as well, it sucks to stop half way through a two hours podcast, come to it later and have to FF through it (slowly) to get to the point you left off.
RSS feeds, excellent. :D
Background pics, great!
Really good news.

Indeed. What about HD audio for Bluray movies?

??

PS3 already supports Dolby True HD and LPCM for HDMI 1.1 ... and can pass everything as bitstream via HDMI 1.3.

The only thing it is missing is DTS Master Audio transcoding for HDMI 1.1

[edit - lol ... beaten ... twice]

id give all of these new things for 720p blu ray support :(

ditto. i can't believe the issue is unresolved some six months from launch -- for whatever reason. probably time to give up hope.

Still dont understand why it's taken this long for wallpapers. Even my lack of programming knowledge tells me that it should be a ****ing cinch to develop. Or am I wrong? What could possibly have hindered this feature technically speaking??? I mean, you get bg pics on games....makes no sense.

my tv does a pretty good job of deinterlacing 1080i, but that process is fundamentally inferior to downscaling from 1080p, and there's no good reason for that feature to be absent from ps3's bd player.

Or buy a new tv

Why? My HD satellite receiver and my 360 HD DVD player look phenominal on my 44 inch Panny RPLCD. the PS3's BR playback just doesnt look as sharp.

So I should ditch my TV because Sony wont give me a simple damn feature?

Sony didn't want u to miss its awesome color-changing background.

haha seriously.

After wallpapers we should start bitching about the fact that they're static. Animated wallpapers or slideshow-wallpapers should def. be do-able in the XMB.

Ironically, this morning I started making custom user icons (official PSN template) for PS3 owners, now they'll be useable on the PSN as well... perfect timing!

Seeing this on the PSN ftw:

That just seems too complete to be true. I mean, it fixes just about everything, doesn't it?

Nope.

720p Blu-Ray playback and DVD upscaling and then Sony can call it a day as far as I'm concerned.

I'm wondering what the holdup is on the DVD upscaling. Many months ago Kuturagi released some type of technical document on how it would not be hard for the PS3 to upscale and we haven't heard anything since. Maybe Sony is intentionally holding it back as long as they can thinking that DVD upscaling could possibly hurt their Blu-Ray disc business.

edit: And they need to add network streaming.

Then... and only then, will the PS3 be some serious competition on my shelf for the Xbox 360.

I've been seriously thinking of ebaying my PS3 because I haven't turned it on for about a month.

it doesn't pass dts hd as bitstream apparently. it should be technically capable but the current firmware will only pass the dts core over bitstream.

so for hd audio, currently it handles:
1.) uncompressed PCM
2.) decoding dolby true hd to PCM
3.) dts hd gets decoded or passed to bitstream as its standard core only

I'm hoping they add in:
1.) decoding dts hd to PCM

and as a bonus (should be trivial so why not):
2.) dolby true hd bitstream over hdmi
3.) dts hd bitstream over hdmi.

Has Sony stated this, because I'm not sure how anyone could confirm this without a Master Audio decoding chip?

Unfortunately, we won't see any until after June at the earliest. DTS just recently redesigned the decoding logic, and resubmitted it for verification with the company sourcing the chips. >_<

Before you decide to Ebay it....send me a pm with how much you would like to get out of it. I could always use a second PS3 for the kids room.

Isn't bitrate a huge part of it?

Not to my knowledge.

1080p for film simply outputs a 1080p frame 3 times, and then the next frame 2 times (maybe it's the other way around). Video is simply 2:2.

For film, a proper 1080i deinterlacer will take the first 2 fields, and combine them to form a single 1080p frame (the 3rd field is a repeat of the 1st, and is disregarded). It will show this frame 3 times. While that is being displayed, it will combine the next 2 fields into a single 1080p frame ... and then display that 2 times. etc.

If your TV is 720p, it will simply downscale the 1080p frames to 720p.

BTW - I think some newer 720p TV's actually accept 1080p so they can avoid the deinterlacing and just do the downscale.
