PS3 Controller?

reirom think so total

Abstract: The invention provides an input device which includes a gripping part, a pointing
part, and at least one depressible part furnished in such a manner that while holding
the gripping part by hand, a user may manipulate the pointing and depressible parts
with fingertips to perform the same kinds of operations as those of a mouse. The
input device may include a rotating and/or a pivoting part and at least one operating
element which provide a still wider variety of functions when operated."

About fucking time they changed the controller design. And in typical Sony fasion this will be a jumbled uncomfortable mess of a controller. But at least it's not just a Dual Shock 3.

Though, they HAD to change the controller this time, because of that rumble motor lawsuit.

Heh. I love new controllers. :D

Edit: What ever happened to that patent that was a Dual Shock controller with see-saw trigger buttons?

WTF!? Are you stupid or are you stupid? This isn't the PS3 controller.

Bahaha! OK now that's funny. If that really were the PS3 controller Sony might as well sell the company off now while there's something to sell. :lol Seriously...I know Reirom can be a little off the deep end but damn...Someone get that guy a straight jacket.

I choose...option....option...uh...

What was the question again?

Who cares if it's not the PS3 controller, IMO my points still stand. Sony can't just make a DS3 this time, it'll likely be a jumbled mess of a controller, and what happened to the see-saw patent?

Whatever the fuck this thing it, I like it, but it looks like it'd be a total bitch and a half to use. Who filed the patent?

It is a Sony patent, but filed back in 2000.

Like the see-saw one, they've probably patented every idea that comes out of R&D so they aren't caught like they were with the infamous rumble case.

if you look at the other pics in the patent it shows it hooked up to a pc with a dv device connected to it, meaning it could be something for multimedia/video editing

BIG :( if that's the case. It needs to be changed up, X360 controller style (triggers, better sticks, main position for the left stick). Don't think it'll happen though, which makes me very sad.

I hate concave thumbsticks with a passion. I prefer the thicker pillow tops instead. The tops of the Xbox analogs are way too thin -- it's annoying.

agreed. stiffer sticks, too. If they can't do concaved sticks, just put a permanent grip texture to it, like the PSP, rather than the rubberized crap that rubs off after a couple years. My launch DS2 was plugging along just fine, except the grip on the left stick wore off, so I had to get a new one.

Wireless + excellent thumbsticks (dump $5 mil into R&D if you have to, Sony, just get it right) = sex

Bonus points if they add a memory stick slot (useful for save files and playlists), power button (unless they do a standard remote like MS, which I'd expect), or headset/USB port on the bottom.

Nah, it also needs to have the L2/R2 buttons replaced with triggers, and the positions of the d-pad/L3 exchanged.

It also needs the analog sticks to be a fuckton better. Worst analog sticks evar.

Quite pathetic, if that be the case. They've had three fucking generations to improve upon that flawed design and innovate, and it would be a fucking shame if they couldn't come up with ANYTHING new.

YES YES YES. All of these things need to happen IMO for the DS to be a great pad...also, the DS2 isn't very comfortable (thank god for the Ligitech Wireless pad). Sony needs to do a major overhaul with their controller. MS looks to have the best overall controller next gen, only thing up in the air is how comfortable it is, but going off Type-S, I'm sure it's going to feel great too (on top of having functionality).

Funny too, since I still look at the Duke as the worst controller ever and in the past I've made fun of it big time. Total 180 for MS as far as controllers go. And for me controllers are a large selling point, great controllers help make great games even better. Sony better not cheap out and give us a very slightly updated pad (like DS1 -> DS2) with wireless.

Umm...MS's controller is the only controller we've seen. I'm as excited about the X360 as the next guy (assuming the next guy is pretty damn excited), but let's not jump to conclusions here.

Very true. They went from having the worst controller to the best.

That's true, I'm jumping the gun. But still, so far MS's 360 pad is exactly what I want from a next-gen controller. It's an amalgam of all the best parts of various controllers.

The one thing I'm scared about is Sony not changing things up with the DS3 cause of two factors 1) Pride, not wanting to seem like they're immitating MS if they change up the left stick and add triggers, 2) BC, they might just leave it the same thanks to this (like they did with PS2).

As for Nintendo, I could care less what they do with their controller. It'll no doubt be wacky, whatever.

Yes they can. They can make a DS3 this time - they can make it look and feel exactly like DS2 minus rumble.

Also, DS owns. Get new hands.

They left the design the same but added a few minor functions. It'll probably be the same. I'm betting one of the functions they add in DS3 will be triggers. It would be nice to see them switch the D-Pad and Left analog stick positions as well.

the d-pad needs to stay where it is. an analog stick is no less usable in the secondary position, but that angle ruins a d-pad.

Then it wouldn't be a Dual SHOCK controller, now would it?

HAW HAW HAW! :D

The implication was that they couldn't design it exactly the same way, but you're correct ;) However, Sony PS3 is mature so it'll have electricity that actually causes pain surging through the controller for DS3.

You crazy elf/dwarf/obscurefantasycreature you! DualShocks are not for you!

Put in little electrodes. Problem solved.

EDIT- Damnit Amir0x beat me to it.

DS3 will probably be like DS2, but with minor improvements.
I'd love to see better analog sticks.
They'll still have rumble with wireless controllers. I don't know what people are complaining about - just turn it off in options if you don't like it.

Isn't that the XBox 360 pad you just described? :lol

I agree about the dpad and l3 being swapped.

Playing with the XBox 360 pad is going to be sweet. It'll be the best pad out there with its changes.

I'm sure the sticks will be a bit better, there was a large improvement with the sticks from DS1->DS2, not large enough to make them really great, but as it is right now, they're 'ok'.

Yes it will (for the forceeable future) :)

If Sony MUST put out another Dual Shock controller, at least fix the god damn analog sticks. Take a note from Nintendo's GameCube controller or even Microsoft's. Christ.

But I'm praying to God they don't just release another DS controller. I don't know if I could take another one. Just come up with something new. Practically every other console manufacturer can do it.

the dualshock has a lot of problems.. and minimum, they'd need to at least do all these things...

- Wireless
- Move left analog stick to primary position
- Change the absolutely fucking shitty bubbled analog sticks to concave (like Xbox Type-S)
- Stiffen up the analog sticks (damn, these stick are just fucked up everywhere I guess)
- Change L2/R2 to analog triggers
- Add headphone/microphone multi-jack to front

Other things I wouldn't mind seeing as a bonus might be stuff like...

- Change the 4 facepad buttons to six buttons like sega saturn
- Add a linear analog throttle slider
- Add small LCD display for stuff like play calling for sports games

I can't see anything touching the magnificent Xbox 360 controller though. It's gaming perfection.

but you just said your ideal controller would have LCD display, six facepad buttons like SEGA Saturn, headphone microphone jack, some other linear analog throttle slider thingy...!

yes but we know that aint happenin. that's dream would stuff. ;) besides, i said I can't see it happenin, not that it couldn't happen. if it does then i'm all for it! :)

k. Dual Shock is still my favorite controller tho.

All next-gen controllers should have a button to turn off the console. I can switch off my TV and my soundsystem with a remote but I have to get out of my chair to turn of my consoles. I know, I'm a lazy ass, but I do think it's just stupid this hasn't been implanted before.

Also, a scrollbutton to scroll trough inventory, text and weapons would be nice. Nintendo should've stuck that on their GameCube controller instead of the horrible Z-button.

I REALLY HOPE they won't change the controller too much.
I wish to have a DualShock 2 like but instead of having L3 and R3 on pressing the joysticks (wich sucks alot) they should have a pair of trigger right under L2 and R2 (yes i kid not, i want 3 pair of shoulder buttons).
Beside being wireless and having a headphone jack, they should remodel the shape of the controller to fit more in hands. I would like it to be as confortable as the GC pad (don't panic, it's the only quality of the GC pad)

Thinking about it, the left joystick could be exchanging place with the D-pad but i hope they won't go for a joystick like the GC or the Xbox one, i personally hate the exagonal plastic of the gamecube one and the Xbox one is not confortable to me.

Yeah, I know. The breakdown on preferences with controllers at GAF was actually extremely close. Shows diversity of hand shapes or something, I guess.

Current Gen:

Dual Shock 2 - 23
Controller S - 22
Original Xbox - 2
Wavebird - 3
Original GC - 11
SEGA PlayStation Controller - 1
Dreamcast Controller - 1

I like that idea! Nice thinking there. I also like the idea a few others have stated about a power button. That's another great idea. And the scroll wheel (think like on your mouse) is another good idea. Great idea even. So, here's my updated super duper DS3 controller, I dunno where all of it would go, but make it fit....

-Wireless

-Analog trigger's under the 4 shoulder buttons

-Scroll Wheel (with notched feeling - like a mouse scroll wheel)

-Power button

-2 Analog sliders (could go on the left and right sides of the controller; could use it for throttling airplanes etc.; i'd even add like 6 notches in it so it could be used in other ways)

-Analog stick moved to primary postion

-Analog sticks changed to concave and with added tension to make them stiffer

-6 face buttons like Sega Knights controller

-Headphone/Microphone multi-jack on front

-LCD screen on front face (middle)

-Updated contour of the controller itself (a bit larger and more ergonomic and comfy)

-Instead of a d-pad, how about a small trackball instead? and just do away with the d-pad. this could help some people with First Person Shooters. Or just think how handy a trackball would be for reading online websites etc.

I'm personally a big fan of Wavebird and Controller S. This just goes to say that redesigning controllers is good! Sony, redesign DS2!
