PS3 might do digital face morphing

This new processor is supposed to bring all kinds of good mojo to the PS3, due to its ability to spread work out over as many as nine cores on a single chip. Most of us still haven’t really grasped the tangible aspects of this, until now. Reader Alexqd3 sent us a link to a couple of Japanese videos that show these amazing face-morphing programs, supposedly capitalizing on CELL technology. The first video here shows a Japanese correspondent playing around with facial makeup and hair which seems fairly normal, but the second video shows actual 3D face manipulation based simply on a photograph of the correspondent’s face.

If this is evidence of the CELL processor’s abilities, I’m definitely looking forward to what this will mean for the PS3, as well as the kinds of games that will be developed to take advantage of it.

The first video we've seen before, but the second I've never seen personally. It is morphing her face from a digital picture that they took of her! With the HD Eyetoy this application is very possible in the PS3. That about innovation. Hopefully some devs will pick something like this up in PS3 exclusive games. Please put my face of a character and I would buy the game pronto.

And can someone please tell us what the hell they are saying. I don't speak Japanese.

Does anybody know what the people are saying?

Rly? That doesn't interest me at all. But, whatever.

You wouldn't want to add your favorite girl to be in your favorite videogame?

i haven't seen this one. very intriguing!!!

the previous toshiba cell demo, although also interesting, has limited potential in game application due to its realtime modeling nature. this one, on the other hand, can be perfectly fit into next-gen games.

Bravo. Teachers am cry.

So the gist of it is that you're excited because someone, somewhere, said that the PS3 *might* do something? And to be clear . . . this is not a confirmed feature supported by ANY game currently in production right now, correct?

OMGWTFOMGBBQOMGTHXPLSDRVTHRU!!!!!!!111!!1

Not Correct. Sony Have 2games in dev with this technology. One was on E3 2005 in video form.

Ooooooooh, that changes everything. I guess I was thrown off by the fact that the title clearly says, "PS3 might do digital face morphing". :)

Teachers not am cry. My brain am cry. :lol

Really who can look at this video and not be excited? Who speaks Japanese here? Can you translate?

that's running on a custom toshiba board. What are the specs of the cell in that board? Is it more powerful than PS3? I know it has more ram.

I hope people realize this is not the Toshiba demo vid(the one with the guy manipulated in realtime). This is different.

IMO, it's more about software here. The demo was a Cell demo in the sense that it used Cell to take a real face and do the image-mapping and manipulation in realtime. But there's no need to keep mapping a face over and over for a game. You can just do the grab once, and map it to a head quickly, and reuse that data throughout the game. The Cell demo just let them do it in realtime as the model moved their heads and mouths in realtime. There was a slight delay, but it was still pretty damn cool. This is the same demo, and I heard nothing about it at E3. It's not like the 360 couldn't do it, but the software is made by Toshiba IIRC. Quite slick. Hopefully this is what face-mapping tech looks like in the next-gen. PEACE.
