PS3 to support KB/M

Playstation 3 supports mouse and keyboard

SONY OFFICIALLY revealed many details about upcoming Playstation 3 hardware. At the game developers conference, held at the Cafe Royal, where George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde used to hobknob, the company decided to provide developers with some more information about the machinery.

We learned that despite having up to seven Bluetooth 2.0 compliant controllers, and six USB slots, and you will also be able to plug in a keyboard and a mouse. The company representative added that you will be able to play games such as Unreal Tournament 2007 with the keyboard and the mouse. This can mean the end of the auto aiming that you now have on Playstation 2, but I guess that developers will need to make the game fit the controller and keyboard and mouse.

Otherwise, if your game is so important, you might take a stand and make people buy a mouse and keyboard for your Playstation 3. At the same time you will be able to use your Playstation portable as a remote device for Playstation 3, but right now won't be able to use it as a controller for games. But you will be able to do some things such as play a video or a song.

With a keyboard and a mouse, the Playstation 3 might be a real threat to the PC. µ

Just as long as the provide us with the ability to only face opposition who are using a controller online, that's fine.

Red Alert 3 ..

PLEAAASSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...

I would love not to upgrade my PC every 3 years, and play on my consoles only...

it will even cost me less if I buy an HDTV

They'll have to split up the servers into two then. Ppl with kb/m and ppl w/o. Ofcourse ppl with will have the ability to chat and every other kb feature PC games enjoy today. It'll be fun, and it'll probably support your standard PC USB based kb/m. :D

Yeah ok. I think in 6 years time, people will look back and shake their heads at how badly MS missed the boat while talking about how Sony really sweeped the market of its feet with the PS3.

Probably not, but it would be amusing.

Of course it supports mouse and keyboard. Even the PS2 does it.

The games on the other hand is a totally different thing. That's up to each and every developer. No way the first party fps games with online capability is going to support this(Unless Sony act and actually make m/k only servers).

UT2K7 is a pc port on the other hand so no wonder they possibly will choose to support m/k combo there.

Makes all the difference to me. For me something like Unreal needs a mouse and keyboard. Any PC USB mouse and keyboard will work right?

The game support is the question. It seems implied though that games will be encouraged to support KB/mouse if it's plugged in, and if it's appropriate (e.g. in FPSes). But yeah, it would possibly mean things for the segragation of online players.

Great. :D

I just hope more games support M/KB next gen, this gen we have what, Half Life on PS2?
So Killzone PS3 with M/KB support* please, you hear Guerilla? :P

* Im going to have my PS3 connected to a TFT monitor anyways so it would be perfect for FPSs to have M/KB support.

With all those USB ports, it sure as hell better support a plethora of USB devices. Is TheInq trying to make up for their mistake yesterday by releasing a bunch of non-news? PEACE.

With a good keyboard + mouse, I'll start buying FPS on the PS3 over the PC since they'll probably be running a bit better on that sucker than on my outdated 3d card :)

If they don't allow hosts and servers to segregate the players, my interest in ever buying an FPS for PS3 just went to zero.

I don't think this is a bad idea, but they have to allow segregation. A decent mouser versus a thumbstick user is no competition, at all.

The PS2 also allowed both, but the question is what games will support these features and how hard will Sony push them as viable peripherals?

The smartest thing would be for Sony to require mouse support for FPS, and require segregation support for mouse games, and not pass games through QA until they meet this criteria.

But they'll probably take the same old 'let the publishers do whatever they want' approach.

As long as pad & kb/m servers are kept seperate from each other I don't mind, but I won't be at all happy if I can't relax on my sofa with a pad in my hand without getting raped by kb/m users.

It would suck if they didnt split up the servers, but thats unlikely, it would put far too many people off.

having KB & M for PS3 is great news, I'll be able to play a lot more FPS now, having a shitty PC and being shit using a controller for FPS has made me miuss a lot of fun down the years.

Honestly, I think Sony and publishers may well approach it from a similar perspective to that already seen in PCs, especially if you can use any old kb and mouse with it. If you can, I imagine they'll simply say "well, you could play PC FPSes with a gamepad too, but no-one does..you shouldn't play your PS3 FPSes with gamepads either if you want to be competitive online". And they can say that since virtually all houses have kb/mouse kicking around. I'm not sure if it'd be a bad thing anyway..I think the game generally would benefit if everyone was using KB/mice.

For single player games it'd be an obvious win. No longer would I necessarily jump at the PC version.

I disagree 100%. If they take this attitude, lots of online players who just want to kick back on the couch will just give Sony the big F U. It's not a matter of whether you have some keyboard/mouse lying around the house, it's about how you prefer playing. I don't mind having k/m for my PC games but in my home theater I don't want that shit anywhere near me.

PS3 may become my FPS console of choice because of this.

It's pretty shitty for Microsoft not to allow KB/M for games, especially with them harping on about "the power of choice".

True enough actually. I was just thinking of my own situation where I could hook the second output to my PC monitor and play it there at a desk. But yeah, that's worth considering..segregation online would perhaps be adviseable. I think Sony would leave that up to the devs, but perhaps provide software tools/support to do that.

Xbox supports XB/M as well. I would imagine that it's up to the developer to choose whether or not to support such features.

If there's support for KB/M and the option to segregate the different controls, then that'd be great. We could see more RTS games and more people playing their consoles hooked up to their monitors and such.

Microsoft only allows developers to support keyboards in Xbox/360 games for text input, not general gaming.

Where's that photo of "I want to believe!"?

I really would love to see a proper KB/M FPS on the PS3, but I doubt it will happen.

Come on Killzone - make my day!

Wish there was a more reliable source, but if this is true then it's excellent news. I have no problem playing FPS with a controller but a KB/M would be infinitely better.

yeah, that PS2 keyboard and mouse support went so well... oh wait, no it didn't...

i dunno if devs will want to go thru the hassle of splitting users based on input devices...

and of course there will be griefers who try to get around any such filter...

sounds like too much work for devs...

and by to much i mean not much, but they wont want to do the extra work...

Did Xbox have native support for Keyboards/mouse? I'm reading an article about PSO on Xbox in which it discusses a special adaptor that was available for the game that let you plug in a keyboard to the Xbox, so it doesn't sound like it was something that was native or standard.

Was the PS2 keyboard/mouse "available" to games, or was it just for Linux?

A few supported it, mostly FPS:

Unreal Tournament
Red Faction
Red Faction II
Half-Life
Soldier of Fortune
Rune Viking Warlord
Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force
Final Fantasy XI

The Armored Core games on PS2 supported USB mouse for just emblem editing/creation and Resident Evil Dead Aim supported the USB mouse as well(but not keyboard). Almost all PS2 Online games support USB keyboard for lobby chat only and not for gameplay. I think Front Mission Online will support keyboard/mouse I read somewhere.

EDIT: I read your post wrong. The official PS2 Keyboard and Mouse was only available through the Linux Kit. Here is a pic of the Linux kit contents including the mouse/keyboard:

OH MY SHIT YES. This story better be fucking true coming from trashy shit site Inquirer.

This is my one greatest wish! Above all else, I want to be able to use keyboard/mouse on consoles for RTS/FPS type games. Superior control method for the motha'fuckin' win.
