PS4 Fan Noise

Yes, it can get quite noisy when playing demanding games. I think this is pretty normal.

Not according to Sony. In all honesty a proper cooling solution should maintain a pleasant noise level even during full load. If you have to increase the game volume to insane levels just to drown out the fan noise what's the point? Not ok.

mine sounded like a jet engine all the time so i sold it. loudest console i have ever owned clearly something was wrong with mine. sadly it no longer had warranty.

I did the same. Launch console. No one on here or that I knew in person had the same outside.

Made my X360 phat sound quite.

damn i should have came on here before i sold it. :(

oh well ill probably buy another one in like a year or two.

Just wait for a redesign, if this is a major issue then hopefully Sony will implement some of the feedback on the redesign.

So far I don't notice the noise at all. Bought mine in January. I sit 5 feet away from my TV when I game. Yes it does get louder than my Xbox One, but I tested it against my PS3 slim, both playing TLOU for a few hours, and I noticed my PS3 fan is slightly louder than the PS4 fan.

So I don't know why some sound like a jet engine other than it being a faulty unit.

It's not faulty as such. The fan does its job. It's just not silent enough for today's standards. Sony engineering fail.

Disagree. The fact that some people have quiet ones suggests that is the expected performance. Any noisier ones is presumably down to less efficient thermal dissipation (eg poor thermal paste application), requiring the fans to work harder to cool the chips. More quality control fail than engineering?

my ps4 can also get a bit loud at times. especially when playing killzone sf mp the fans got faster.

it really doenst bother me that much, but if i write to sony, that my fan is loud, is that really enough to get a new console from them?

also...is there anyway to keep my hdd, when replacing the console...i mean..all my stuff is on there.

Probably not, and no.

Since they with it's design promises that it's supposed to be cool and quiet at all times yes.
They published a presentation filled with details on the cooling in particular and said it's supposed to be quieter than a ps3 slim so yes. Their support confirms something is wrong if it isn't quiet no matter which title is being played. So as long as it's not quieter or equally quiet as a ps3 slim during longer gaming sessions you should be entitled to a replacement or repaired unit. There are far too many people claiming to have really quiet consoles even while playing for example The Last of Us for this not to be true.

the price to pay for sony designing the outer case first and then squeezing in the internals later, just not enough space inside the case for a decent fan to move the air.

Space is not the issue here. They chose cheap thermal paste and didn't bother to use a better fan. It moves the hot air through nearly all directions towards the back. His white unit has a faulty disc drive by the way. Not a faulty fan. Not from what the video tells us.

The biggest issue they seem to have is piss-poor quality control at the factories.

EDIT: When I say better I mean that they could've chosen a more silent one.

Well I popped into Game and they said to record the noise so when I go into the store if it doesn't do it I will have evidence. I plan to record the app reading of the noise level too as I'm not sure how well it will record.

I'll take in the recording initially because I've swapped out the HDD and I'm not going through the whole process of swapping back the HDD just for them to refuse to swap it and then have to re-install everything.

Do that and print out a copy of my conversation with Sony's support where they confirm that something is wrong it it's not silent while playing games.
You'll find it in one of the pages in this thread.

I used to let this shit drive me nuts with my PS3 and xbox360 but for this gen I'll give them two chances.
I agree my PS4 is not as quiet as they advertised but I'll put up with it and if it fails then I'll exchange for another one then that's it for me with Sony until the new revision of the HW.
If the model is meant to be quiet but they can't achieve it through cheap materials and shoddy QC then fuck'em.

Word. Had one PS3 phat, but a later model which was quiet as a mouse, several PS3 slims which all were also whisper quiet at all times. Had a couple of 360's which all were far too loud for my liking (still far too objectively loud). MS fixed it with their slim models, but they came too late if you ask me. Now with the PS4 Sony tried to shine with a promise of it being better in all those regards than the previous generation, but here I am. On my fourth PS4. Difference is like night and day compared to especially the first one, but it's still not at all as quiet as they promised. Giving them one chance to take it in, fix it and send it back whisper quiet or replace it right away with one they test before they send it to me. If that doesn't work I'm so breaking the warranty of a completely new product I've had in my possession for a couple of days and that I payed $560 fucking for.
Changing the thermal paste to either Arctic Cooling's MX-4 or some Arctic Ailver 5. Might even bother to change the thermal pads too.
(It's unfortunately much more expensive in Sweden or the EU.)

I think it depends on the unit, My White PS4 is noticeably quieter than my original launch one.

Same. I wonder if Sony would swap my launch one. It isn't unbearably noisy, but it is on par with my launch PS3 if I'm playing TLoU remaster. Combined with the knackered controllers I wouldn't mind a new one if it is quieter. I can live with it though if necessary

OK, so some initial testing - I d/l a free app on my wifes iPhone 4S and placed the phone the correct way round in the middle of the matt-black section on the top around 1 inch from the very back:

~30db off
~40db on in menu
~48db during TLoU peaking at 50db

No 'jet engines' but fairly loud and I wonder if removing the PS4 from the cabinet has helped, but I guess that's not the point, I don't want my PS4 on top of my cabinet on display I want it hidden away (but I leave the cabinet doors open during play).

I need to play a bit longer on different levels...does anyone remember a particulary noisey section? Either way I don't think ~48db is acceptable (and I know I've had it noisier).

Anyone else tried something like this?

At peak mine runs at 53db doing the same thing.

Honestly I don't know if I got lucky or what but both my ps4's are whisper quiet except when I first load a disc and it spins up. After that I don't hear them at all. My og ps3 on the other hand is so loud I don't like playing it anymore

Bought a 2nd PS4 over the weekend for upstairs, after playing on it for a while I couldn't believe how quiet it was. Have called Sony about my launch model that's always sounded like a hairdryer on high and they're replacing it under warranty.

As I had nothing to compare to I never thought anything of it, but the difference is night and day, it's like my HD7970 being on 30% fan speed vs 90%.

The only time i got a really loud fan noise was when my NFS game was installing for the first time. Once installed, or it finished reading from the disc it quieted down.

No other game has made my PS4 go nuts. Knock on wood.

My brother did have an issue with the a little piece of plastic under the eject button. Making the PS4 keep beeping, until he removed it. Dunno what that was all about.

You lucky bastard.
Want to trade?

Yeah. Tried the first three I had and they all gave me readings of ~60dB after about 20 min of Killzone. Have to get back to you on the fourth one.

FTR my readings are from the digital version and the phone placed on top of the PS4.

It would make a big difference if it were disk and if I moved the phone, I just wanted to be 'fair' because obviously I wouldn't hold my ear to the back vent.

I will also try the same tests with the PS4 in my cabinet and being held the thickness of a case off the desk to see if that makes a difference as the figures quoted were quite stable (ie pretty constantly hovering at those levels).

shouldn't you really be doing those tests 1m from the source of the noise?

and what app are you using? curious to try on my two - my white one is definitely a lot quieter

I suppose, it's just that Game wanted me to record the sound so it made sense to have the app reading where you could see it. Also everyones '1 mtr away' is different whereas positionally anyone with an iPhone (or access to one) can re-create my test for free so there's some consistency in comparisons.

The discs only spin for a few minutes. After that they stop spinning completely.

My white PS4 is near silent. This is actually making me nervous after reading this thread. I'm gonna go and make sure the fan is actually functional when I get home. :P

What games have you tested? If it's only Destiny you're playing, it shouldn't be making much noise whatsoever.
