PS5 Pro jet engine fan like PS4 (not coil whine)

Hi there!

Got my PS5 Pro last year, and have been playing it regularly since:

Astro Bot -> Metaphor: ReFantazio -> Shadow of the Erdtree -> Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

But, when I started playing Dynasty Warriors Origins for longer sessions I started noticing that the fan was getting WAY louder than ever (not coil whine). Before, it was as silent as my launch PS5.

Since then, these games have triggered the fan to jet engine level of noise only comparable to what I experienced with my OG PS4:

(after 2 hours or so of gameplay)

Clair Obscur -> DOOM The Dark Ages -> Death Stranding 2

I've already opened it up to clean as much dust as possible.

Should I read this as "normal"? In the sense that Sony consoles have this history of noise when games start to become more demanding.

Or should I go through the hassle of sending the machine to the technical support? With the chance of it coming back with the same problem.. or even worse.. with the coil whine that so many people report.

Thank you for your opinions and feedback.

Cheers

Sounds like a failing SSD storage issue, as the APU chip is typically going to have bad thermals at the beginning and fail early or be totally fine. and power use for games on the pro is likely to improve with patches, not get worse. Where as storage can be fine, get lots of use and progressively fail without actually dying.

If you have a spare SSD with heatsink to spec you could always try installing it and running games from it to see if the thermals improve on your Pro.

My PS5 Pro is the quietest Playstation Console I've ever owned (Had each revision since PS3), it's a bit noisier than the Series X and much more than Switch 2 but for a Playstation, pretty decent so I suspect yours isn't normal.

You are not the only one who has reported noise from PS5 Pro. Mine is completely quiet unless the drive spins up. If it were me, I'd call support and find out what your options are. If you can return it and get it fixed then that would be better in the long run, imo. Do it while it is under warranty.

If it is happening on most games, then it is not normal. Just make sure it is getting sufficient airflow and is clean. The last time someone complained about this on GAF, they got a free replacement. I'd recommend doing the same.

Mine is whisper quiet. I'd send it in. Only issue I've had is with the Pulse Elite headset or PSLink disconnecting, but that also happened with my PS5 Slim before trading it in for the Pro.

Coil whine might be common among PS5s but definitely not fan noise. No PS5 variant should be loud, definitely something wrong with your Pro. I mean the ps4 and p4 pro were LOUD (headphones were a must for some games), it should definitely not be anywhere near that.

You have to bare in mind that the separate heat sink on the GPU is one of the main culprits for collecting dust, and you have to dismantle the entire console to be able to clean it, so you may think it's clean inside, but without dismantling it fully it may still be clogged with dust

I had a problem with my OG console shutting down randomly during gameplay, and it was the GPU heatsink and power supply airflow that was causing the problem, cleaning both require taking the entire board to pieces
