PS4 Firmware 3.0 Features

So, PSN name changes in 2016 then?

Heh, nice changes though mostly social. I suppose it will make it more interesting to navigate outside of gaming.

Well that's a pretty good update, the YouTube streaming is pretty big. 10GB is good, strange that they've put a limit on it like that though. Hope it's enough as there are some pretty big save files on the PS4.

It's veering close to the shooting themselves in the foot meme, but had Sony not inexplicably bloated save files for every game, they wouldn't have needed to expand cloud storage quite so desperately. Oh well, at least it's better now.

So glad they added PNG support though.

How much more is a lot? This already is a substantial update, so is there really a lot more they haven't told us?
Some sort of PS2 support is coming before the next big firmware update, unless someone knows which studio ported those PS2 Star Wars games that come free with the Battlefront bundle. I'd like to think they're announcing it at TGS because they're doing it right (i.e., disc support).

Storage should be unlimited (no reason no to), but 10 GB is a good start I guess.
It really should be unlimited, or have reasonable caps like 20 saves per game max, or something reasonable to keep the system from being abused, if that's a worry.

The reason I keep running out of space is because I have a lot of PS4 games. I'd imagine that Sony wouldn't want to put any roadblocks to buying even more.

So, I guess I was right!

So, I was looking on Wikipedia (as I tend to do when I'm bored) and I decided to read the history of the PS4 System Firmware. While doing so, I tried to see if there was a pattern to when major firmwares are released and I noticed (while there haven't been many major releases) they are quite consistent.

The first major firmware released on November 13th, 2013 (two days before the release of the PS4. This is Firmware 1.50. Some major things with this were Remote Play and the ability to play Blu-Rays/DVDs, among other important system functionality.

Five months later, on April 30th, 2014, Firmware 1.70 released. This was ShareFactory update, which also allowed users to disable HDCP and stream at 720p.

Six months later, on October 28th, 2014, Firmware 2.00 released. This was the Shareplay update.

Five months later, on March 26th, 2015, Firmware 2.50 released. This was, of course, the long awaited Suspend/Resume update. It also included the Accessibility features.

So, while I'm not sure it qualifies as a trend, it seems major updates come every five to six months. So if this trend does continue, I would not be shocked to see the next major firmware be revealed (perhaps at TGS) sometime in September.

If the next big update after 3.00 is in February, then I'd say they definitely have a release pattern.

There must be an explanation why friend notifications are overlooked every single update. It's literally 5 lines of code to get it working or something.

It's about time we got that storage increase.

All Littlebigplant owners rejoice! Your game save no longer takes up half your cloud storage.

Gotta love the Fav Friend Group!
No longer will I be constrained by my massive and regrettable friends list.

Nice changes. Friends list management is badly needed. Hopefully no more upload failed notifications for cloud space being full

Still no friends notifications though?

* Online Storage Increase?

* Now you can group your friends? We can have a GAF Group of our friends?

* PNG Screenshots?

Sony freaking listened. Awesome! Hell, those are like 3 of the most complained about lack of features for while now!

That sounds liike a great list of features, hope the execution is good.

(even without stability)

Sony announced few new features that will come with 3.0 firmware. They say this is not final list.

I can't even handle the waiting for what the final list of features could be...

10 GB of storage is nice, but Sony should consider finding a way to trim down the bloated saved data files. Some of those files seem way too large for the scope of the games they're working with.

The groups stuff is going to be a godsend for people who have a lot of friends (my 65 peeps really aren't in any rush to join one of those!)

Pretty much. Weak update.

People have requested a lot of these features. Honestly, I know it's one of those things that people are just going to complain like PS+ threads nowadays but c'mon. Don't support incredibly reductionist posts like that.
