Yeah all part of their accessibility update. Was a really big update for the handicapped and even people with issues seeing.
Not to mention we got button remapping and the ability to zoom in like so in any game. Pretty nifty for everybody.

When you are live streaming to twitch/youtube/ustream you can have the full screen on and have the comments read to you by the ps4.
Edit: I'm not in the beta.

Oh, good... more streaming and sharing nonsense to ignore. What does a guy have to do to get an "Appear offline" option, Sony? Is it really that difficult?

I love playing with my friends... most of the time. But there are those days when I'd like a bit of anonymity to just play without being bothered, ya know?
Valve and Microsoft understand this. I wish Sony did as well.

I purposely stop watching streams with the chat shit on the side as I don't care about what spammers have to say, I want to see the game.

That's even better.. need to see basis. Lots of activity- it could stay up there on the screen. No activity- it could dim away. Maybe even possible to control opacity?
PSBlog Share hasn't been moderated for more then 4 months so its useless there. Ideas don't even go live anymore.

We also had Video Chat and Friend Notifications. I think they said they didn't want to just copy and paste ps3 features but now since they have friend sorting they have the groundwork, there is no excuse. Hope it comes sooner then later. And those oovoo rumors better come to fruition too.

This wouldn't work.
Why in the hell would I put this on if I was streaming? A fifth of the game screen is being completely covered. Any minimap or ammo counter would be completely covered.

I'm offering as an additional and optional ability of course.
Opacity controls, the ability to configure position of the entire overlay, and option to remove avatar, would all improve it.
The default chat screen takes up 35% of the screen real estate with the additional con of shrinking your game.. Let's look again.
Anything under a 50 inch you lose detail and the advantages of full screen.
Of course I'm saying this is most useful as as an option especially for single player but I still think it has its merits for MP depending in the game or what you are doing.
Im going to do an additional mock up of just the bare minimums and chat text. As well as an even more transparent bar.
That probably would be even better.

Also, what they need to do is have an option where you can see your chat and play in a window like that screenshot, but the stream is just the game itself.

This example is so perfectly framed, but I don't think this would work in real world use. It'd be too annoying even at low opacity I think.
Officially it is supposed to be 6 months according to Sony, though it doesn't mean they delete your cloud storage when that time expires. I've heard stories of people (such as yours) who were able to restore their cloud saves and data even after 24 months. Perhaps the policy was different back then(?) Who knows.

They did say it, but it is probably only only partially true. Sure, the needed to spend a large portion of their OS R&D time on the social and sharing aspects, but it is lack of time and resources which did not allow to have parity with PS3 in terms of features IMHO... Lacking friends notification is not something they enjoy, but shifting to a brand new OS has its toll. Hopefully PS5 evolves from the PS4 OS and libraries wise and architecturally they stick with x86 and semi-custom AMD GPU's or with compatible solutions this having easy backward compatibility with PS4 too.

Wouldnt work for most games.
I'd much prefer a picture in picture for a camera on the bottom right like most streamers have. Comments should scroll on the bottom, like a ticker. Especially since the sidebar keeps breaking up bigger words.
A single comment can fit horizontally on the bottom of the screen.

I think the perfect complement to this would be a system toggle to show/hide comments. For example, PS button + Triangle would show or hide this transparent chat overlay you propose.
Since we already know they can use PS Button + Button for system commands (PS button + Square zooms in your game, for example), this would be 100% doable.
This would be ideal.

This 100%. Hope somebody from Sony's looking at this! The PS+button could be used for a few cool extra things across the OS. PS button plus L1/R1 to skip music trakcs if using Spotify for instance is the first thing I'm thinking of. Must be a ton of other uses like this.

Hope it fixes PS Share forgetting your Youtube log-in... Anyone else start having this problem suddenly this year? All of last year and maybe until spring, never ever had to re-log into Youtube to Share a video. But sometime this summer (around the time of the new Suspend mode firmware, actually; dunno if that's which patch caused it), it started making me re-log in often, and recently basically every day after I put the system to sleep at night. Rather annoying to type large complicated passwords daily on the controller lol especially if I'm trying to Share in the middle of action from within a game.
