PS4 Media Player v2.50 coming soon, adds support for high-res (FLAC) audio files, and user generated 360 videos / photos viewable in VR
https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/786262612577169408

Your PlayStation 4’s Media Player is getting a new update tomorrow, 13th October, which rolls out support for 360° videos and photos using PlayStation VR, plus introduces new audio support options that’ll benefit audiophiles.

Let’s talk that 360° video and photo support first. If you’ve a PlayStation VR connected to your PlayStation 4, simply activate ‘VR mode’ from Media Player’s Options menu, then select your 360° video or photo from your media server or USB device. You’ll now be able to view your chosen media in full 360° thanks to the power of PlayStation VR.

(Note, to enjoy 360-degree media on PlayStation VR, any supported video – MKV, AVI, MP4, MPEG2 PS , MPEG2 TS, AVCHD – or photo – JPEG, BMP, PNG – files must be captured in equirectangular format by a 360-degree omnidirectional camera.)

But that’s not all. Also as part of tomorrow’s update rollout, v2.50 also introduces improvements to your audio experience. Once updated, the PS4 Media Player will not only support High-Res (FLAC) audio files, but will also upscale your non-FLAC music to near high-resolution audio quality.

The latter is thanks to Sony’s DSEE HX™ technology. What this means is any MP3s or AACs – files whose space-saving compression strips out some of a song’s subtleties – played through your PlayStation 4 will be automatically upscaled. It means your compressed music will now sound much richer as a result. You can get a more in-depth breakdown on how the technology works here.

I just want the bloody icon to fit in with my themes instead of being the only system software that stays a big blue box regardless of theme.

Looks like shit on the otherwise gorgeous Journey theme.

I wish they would add a CD player. My PS4 is the only disc drive I have left and my language textbooks all come with cds.

I would assume 3D also otherwise what's the point?

In the PS VR Ultimate FAQ, it was stated that 3D would not be supported at launch. Only 360 in 2D... it followed by suggesting that 3D might be a future update.

I was wondering if this is the future update, or if it's just the old announcement rolling in.

Q: Will PS VR display 3D content in Cinematic Mode?
No. In Cinematic Mode, PS VR will display 3D games and films in 2D when playing on a 3D-compatible TV. When playing with non 3D-campatible TVs or without a TV, PS4 won’t play 3D games and films.

Q: In the future will PS VR support 3D content in Cinematic Mode?
We have nothing to announce at this point in time.

What about user created 4K videos?

I would think that just depends which PlayStatiom you have.

So regular PS4... no 4K videos. Pro Version, yes it will.

but that might just make too much sense... so maybe it isn't guaranteed..lol.

MKV support is ass.

I've had times were I play something and it plays easily or I have to try like 7 times before it plays it. Sometimes on the same file.

So they add 360 videos, but still no DLNA or Mp3 support?

Edit: LOL it won't even play 360 videos in 3D... what's the point, then? Surely it's harder to play them in 2D, given that they're natively 3D anyway, and so is PSVR? Baffled.

Thats for cinematic mode, the media player should be able to play 3d 360 videos.

Is that sony upscaling codec any good? Or should I be worried?

Flac support finally, i'm ever closer to not having to use handbrake to convert my mkvs. Want to use my ps4 instead of ps3, since the ps4 loads an entire tb of files instantly(ps3 loads each file in very slowly)

Ps4 media player support dlna and mp3.

About mkv:
Media player
Video MKV
Visual: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3(Dolby Digital)

The main problem with mkv files is DTS sound

Oh, in which case that's fantastic.

I have no idea what cinematic mode is then. Isn't it for video/DVD playback and playing regular games on the headset?

That's exactly what cinematic mode is for, videos and games that aren't meant for VR. 360 videos are meant for VR, and are treated differently. I guess it's not a given that it'll support 3D 360 videos, but it's certainly reasonable to expect.

upscaled audio is bullshit. Can't add info where is none, you can however dynamically eq slightly/excite etc... like the good old crystallizer

The hell are you talking about?

PS4 has Plex & Media Player that are DLNA & they also support MP3. where is this post even coming from? Do you even have a PS4? if so why not try things before you make post like this.

MP3 support was added over 2 years ago, how did you not know that? Not trying to be rude, just curious. I saw this mentioned in another thread recently as well (not sure if it was you who mentioned it too), so it made me curious.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Hmm, the example they gave on that screenshot is practically the worst kind of VR videos. It'd be like looking at the spherical projection from the inside, with nothing you see being 3D. I hope they support actual 3D spehrical videos with this. If not, there's the VRideo VR app available, that offers a selection of these kinds of videos for watching.

This is from the blog: "any supported video ... must be captured in equirectangular format".
What about MKV support?
MKVs play fine on PS4, as long as they don't have DTS audio - in which case you can use MKV tools to reencode audio and keep the video stream intact. Takes a few seconds per video to do this process. Vast majority of MKVs seem to be encoded with AC3 audio however, and that plays fine on PS4 as-is.
