PS4 Media Player v2.50 coming soon

Quick question since some really knowledgeable people here. How is the PS4s sound processor? I couldn't afford to buy an external soundcard for my laptop but the PS3 output was pretty much as good.

Why would an audiophile be running anything via a game console anyway?

The idea is laughable. Just because someone uses FLAC doesn't make them an audiophile.

PlayStation 1: The audiophile's dream?

Sometimes we get these tips that come out of left field. We got one late last night from reader Riku, who talks about his dad's unusual acquisition for his high-end audio setup:

Hi!

My father's hobby is to search for "the perfect sound" making him a high-end audiophile. I was very surprised when I saw an old Playstation 1 (Version SCPH-1001/2) plugged into his super expensive audio rig. He told me, that that particular version of the console has RCA-inputs in the back which has a superb sound output. The console has become an underground sensation in the Hi-Fi scene. He told me to check out some articles at 6moons.com, an audiophile website.

So wait, the old beatup PS1 that I gave to my friend is a high-end audiophile machine? There's no way this can be true! Yet Riku was kind enough to provide us some links from 6moons that talk about the power of Sony's debut console. In one article:

During all this audio fun, my pal Pete Riggle stopped by with an audio underground digital favorite, the Sony PlayStation 1 (Model No. SCPH-1001). I had heard rumors of just how good this particular version of the PS1 is when used as a CD player and was curious to give it a listen. This kid's video game player really does have outstanding audio performance. I'm guessing you'd have to spend more than $6000 on a one-box CD player to equal let alone better it.

$6000? To eBay and beyond (the jump)!

[Thanks for the wonderful pic, Dyson!]

I'm impressed that Sony put together such high-end parts in the PlayStation 1 that it could produce such quality sound. Running a quick search on eBay for SCPH-1001 brings up consoles priced at $5-$35, way below the $6000 equivalent system. Another article provided to us says:

The Sony Playstation 1 SCPH-1001 is another giant killer that's a darling of the audio underground. If you're looking for audio sonic fireworks, the PS1 might not be your cup of tea but if you're looking for an outstandingly musical digital front end that can play music better than just about every multi-kilobuck digital source, look no further - way recommended.

Now, I want to ask all our audiophile readers out there (i.e. Dale North): what about the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3? Do these two later iterations of Sony's console keep up the good work and provide a great deal for audiophiles? Or instead, did Sony only provide mediocre parts for your sound system?

The PS4 would be perfectly fine as a DLNA server to play music over a home network - IF it played songs in album order. It is a lot faster and has an otherwise nicer interface than the DLNA servers built into high-end AVRs.

But I have a hard time fathoming who is clamoring for a lossless codec, but doesn't care about the songs playing in the correct order.

You can also use plex

I do hope it'll be better about not suddenly deciding that sound files are corrupted. It'll be in the middle of a song and it just stops and skips to another one without any sort of notification. Then if you try to go back, you can't play it at all. On another day, the same file might play just fine.

The media player used to be able to play live channels from my HD Home Run, but the last few versions report them as broken files. I wonder what changed.

Really need some DSEE HX™ upscaling results. I'm a bit dubious about their claims.

It sound better but I guess the only way to truly test it is to have a unupdated PS4 hooked up to the same output as a updated PS4 & go back in forth,

The current media player is hot garbage. Doubt sony will upgrade it to something useable this time.

My ps4 refused to play almost all of my media files from my computer so i ended up with just hooking up my regular desktop to my tv. Much better then the sony app.

Plex on the PS4 reencodes music files into an h.264/AAC video file because that's the only codec they can use with the SDK they're using on Playstation.

I was talking to the person who wanted his music to play in the right order with a good DLNA interface.

Can the PS4 play music cd's now? If not: :-(

(Yes, I'm one of those people with a cd collection still, but no devices left that can play them now that my PS3 is broken. Would be very convenient if the PS4 could do the something every other Sony console could.)

I dunno, the new update seems to be working better than the old for me ... seems like a lot of the errors I had have been fixed. Seems faster, too ... could be my imagination.

Have they fixed the icon is the main thing to be honest

Have they made it so you don't have to do a stupid folder structure

Hmm, the example they gave on that screenshot is practically the worst kind of VR videos. It'd be like looking at the spherical projection from the inside, with nothing you see being 3D. I hope they support actual 3D spehrical videos with this. If not, there's the VRideo VR app available, that offers a selection of these kinds of videos for watching.

This is from the blog: "any supported video ... must be captured in equirectangular format".

MKVs play fine on PS4, as long as they don't have DTS audio - in which case you can use MKV tools to reencode audio and keep the video stream intact. Takes a few seconds per video to do this process. Vast majority of MKVs seem to be encoded with AC3 audio however, and that plays fine on PS4 as-is.
That has to be addressed, but even then you can simply use UMS to transcode and watch your movie.

Heh, that Sony article explains very little about how DSEE HX actually works.

That's because it's 99.9% nonsense.

Enhancing an MP3 file means some extra effects -- typically spatial and directional -- will be added to the file to give the illusion of greater clarity, depth, and presence. There's nothing wrong with making a song sound artificially better. It's just not a magical solution.

To be complete, the Plex client on the PS4 doesn't reencode anything, Plex Media Server does.

Sony, do me a favor and hold this L. My animu still doesn't work. Xbox won this one.

Just make a VLC app. This won't do.

What are you using to serve the media to your PS4? if it's UMS try the different encoding in the folder that show up on your PS4 ,

UMS? I use a USB stick. Some mkv files work with subtitles, but others (old anime) it won't play at all.

But that’s not all. Also as part of tomorrow’s update rollout, v2.50 also introduces improvements to your audio experience. Once updated, the PS4 Media Player will not only support High-Res (FLAC) audio files, but will also upscale your non-FLAC music to near high-resolution audio quality.

The fuck? It doesn't work that way at all. Video upscaling is one thing, and in many cases it can look better than the default resolution (depending on the display resolution), but you can't "upscale" (re-encode) a lower quality audio file to somehow add what horrible compression took away already. Adding a bunch of EQ to it doesn't make it any "higher-resolution". What a load of shit.

upscaled audio is bullshit. Can't add info where is none, you can however dynamically eq slightly/excite etc... like the good old crystallizer

Exactly.

The info was there it just got compressed when they ripped it to MP3 this will bring some of the detail back.

Lol, that's not how compression works. FLAC files are compressed too anyway, they are just lossless. Wave is what you would rip if you want an uncompressed lossless file, but they are rather large. You aren't going to magically extract information from a file that's 1/5th the size, or smaller than that of a lossless track and suddenly hear what's not actually even there.

I just want them to fix their DLNA implementation so it supports jamcast. I use jamcast to stream Apple Music from my PC to my Xbox One and it works flawlessly, but I've never been able to get it to work with PS4. I'll finally be able to cancel my Spotify sub.

My receiver says all music files are being played back at 192 khz regardless of original sample rate. There's a small difference but nothing major.

I have noticed though it seems like my left speaker is unusually quiet when I play music after starting the app. I need to play a video and then restart the track to fix that.

Using Plex means sacrificing the ability to play music in the background. The app is also pretty slow compared to the PS4 Media Player and requires the use of a Plex server, whereas the DLNA standard works with a bunch of apps and network appliances. Personally I would rather just use the PS3 than use Plex on PS4.

Yes but you was comparing the interface so I figured you was just talking about as a media player
