I doubt people would want to experience paging lock ups on consoles. In addition, flash is expensive.
Flash is cheap compared to Ram.

Yup. A pretty significant difference at that.
Sony changed one of the few things that can be changed this late in the game. There will be no major deviations from the current Durango specs. If there are differences they will be minor tweaks at best.
I'm only repeating what Digital Foundry has said. There is no reason not to trust what they say.
CPU already "changed".
That's 1 so far.
I'm sure Sony will stress the fact that multiplats will easily look better on their system, the masses may not care but the gamers surely will. MS can't rely only on the "masses", their machine is still seen as a game console after all and the Xbox brand has been very successful, thanks to who ?
The problem here is that not only is the PS4 quite a bit more powerful but also easy to developp for given its PC like architecture and the ability to code to the metal. Rumor has MS have not allowed developpers to do so but I'm not buying that at all.

I for one am a firm believer that Microsofts God console will have 16GB of XDR2 RAM
What changes has the CPU undergone ?
I heard it's more powerful than a traditional Jaguar but that does not say much.
If power meant everything, the most powerful console would sell the most every generation.
yeah but the bar is only high in the memory. I see no reason why the Xbox couldn't be better in every other way.PS4 has access to 5.87 GB of ram per frame at 30 FPS
X720 has access to 2.27 GB of ram per frame at 30 FPS
Pretty big difference on paper. PS4 is a beast. Seems sony made a last minute change and hope MS will follow. Would be awesome if the x720 can beat the power of the ps4.
The bar is pretty high now.
Little to no texture pop-up?PS4 Ram vs. Durango Ram: How big of a difference does it make?
So lesson we have learned is price and low power are most important. Go buy the Wii U, welcome to the next gen leader.

It all depends on what Microsoft does to carry owners from one device to the next. If they throw them overboard as Sony has done with the PS3-to-PS4 transition, then they've essentially given 360 owners the stupid choice to make up their minds anew, and when you're the weaker console with some potentially bad features (no used games, always online) that's a bad call to make. That's why I assume BC is in the next Xbox.
I wouldn't bet on BC for the next Xbox, this is not something that in my opinion is going to matter much, the 360 will still be supported for those who want to play 360 games.
The only way for MS to shine is to deliver an impressive set of 1st/3rd party exclusives and I believe they can do that. Their social features are not to be underestimated as well, I know that the next Xbox aims at being "the" machine of the living room but I'm still doubtful regarding the outcome of MS's strategy, even if their durango launches at a more interesting price point (350).
To my mind, putting the emphasis on high-end gaming first is a wise choice, that does not prevent a game console from being capable at multimedia tasks.
@Reiko> Hum...Will that make up for the GPU/Ram shortcomings ? I wonder what 3rd parties will think of what they know about the next Xbox and especially what system will they choose as the lead platform.
If something else has changed on the GPU end, the power gap will get interesting if true.

Suddenly everyone is an expert on RAM.
Here we go again now all we're going to hear from Keighly for the next year when he gets interviews with Xbox people is about the RAM. It's CELL and Blu-Ray all over again. Sony did this hardware FUD campaign against the Dreamcast, 360, and now Durango.
Sony always hypes up their hardware superiority. Consumers want functionality and services, original games. I almost wish MS would delay 6 months just to avoid having to go through a FUD campaign and the inane debates we're going to hear for the next 3 years*. The original Xbox was spared of this crap. Sony fans are going to endlessly try to demonstrate and prove the superiority of the console and justify the financial losses that Sony is incurring. Xbox fans are going to breathlessly show how great the best games on the system look. Endless screen shot comparisons and graphic whore threads from both sides. I still remember people comparing the sparks in Burnout. What percentage of people care about this stuff more so than the basic functionality and services of the console?
Why can't PSP and Vita sell anywhere near as well as DS or 3DS?
Maybe you could write Wii success off as a fluke but how do you explain DS and 3DS beating Sony so badly? Price? Backwards compatibility? Lack of must have AAA exclusives? How does PS4 fix any of these classic Sony problems?
*They won't delay, they'll absorb the FUD campaign and let Sony continue to bleed money in the speeds and feeds war.
MS would be asinine to let Sony have such an edge in raw power. The "masses" may not care but the crowd that will turn their machine into a success does to a degree.
I'm looking forward to the month of April with hopefully a good surprise regarding the specs. But honestly there is one game that could make me buy the system without hesitation : Alan Wake 2, assuming it won't release on PC.
Gamers will definitely notice the difference in performance between both versions.
as much as this gen or more you think?
With Durango and the PS4 both having very similar architectures and the PS4 being quite a bit more powerful, the differences should be more noticeable.as much as this gen or more you think?
I very much expect Multiplatform games to be tailored for the weaker system and rarely exceed that mark on the stronger platform.
Exclusive titles on the stronger platform are going to be pushed to the limit. Teams like Sony Santa Monica are god like at optimization.
Well I think the thread is discussing what performance gaps between multiplatform games may arise and what differences we might see in exclusive titles, not sales. If power meant everything, the most powerful console would sell the most every generation.
Right it does add 32MB to x box720you keep ignoring the ESRAM
although I know you think it does nothing.
Basically, from what I understand, the RAM is 2-3x times better on the PS4.
With size being the same, bandwidth becomes the only relevant thing to compare - and there's no discussion as to which RAM type is the winner there.
It's not even like it will be harder to make use of the extra bandwidth if they up-port from the Durango, all they need to do is flip a switch and use higher-texture resolutions.
Would the 32MB of super-fast RAM on Durango make their 8GB of DDR3 equivalent to the PS4's same amount of GDDR5 ?
Wow how old is that?http://archive.arstechnica.com/paedia/b/bandwidth-latency/bandwidth-latency-1.html

We'll see if Durango can Dodge the Ram issue.
