Back Up Data: Data on PS4 can be backed up and resorted using USB storage. This will back up all data for the console, including settings, save data, screenshots, video clips, download data, and more.

Probably has something to do with multiple programs accessing the HDD at the same time. This bypasses that by making the music app only read from a usb port. Might be something they can fix in the future but getting it working somehow is what they are concerned with right now.

Edit:Trying to look it up does the new XBO update let you play music from the internal HDD? All I can find is from a USB source or streaming online or DLNA. This really just might be a HDD access thing.

Legal issues when it comes to not being able to copy mp3s, probably? That and it would completely defeat the existence of its own on-console music service which is a much bigger deal to them now than PS3 era. So they're being a little dickish but I can also see their reasoning. They're neither accountable nor responsible for stuff you plug in to the box, so it's an easy escape clause against a ton of things.

The lack of custom icons on this makes me hopeful that you can just use whatever backgrounds you want now because that image certainly doesn't look like the 'themes' they've announced where Icons/Titles were customized.

I think it will be just one of the stock themes. If you look at the colour selection picture it is titled 'Flow', I'd imagine this is one called 'Blocks' or something.

Library revamp is good because it means they are open to listening. So even if this isn't perfect they can tweak again later. I'd actually like fewer 'recent' icons, and then have music/TV/library 'folders' easier to get to

I'll admit my post was mostly a knee-jerk reaction, but still, the slow progress in adding the most-requested features which still are missing (e.g. suspend/resume, DLNA) is seriously bumming me out. This is definitely a step in the right direction, but at the same time, I cannot applaud them for adding the more basic stuff that has been part of the PS3 OS for ages.

USB music streaming is surprising. I don't have a problem with this and this could even better fit my own use of the feature but I really wasn't expecting that. Maybe Sony don't want music streaming to mess with game data streaming from the hard drive so music streaming has to come from another source? Also I wonder if the possibility to store music on PS4's hard disk wouldn't expose it to some taxes in some countries, hence the choice of streaming music from an external device only. There has to be a reason...

Crunchyroll on the ps3 streams on higher quality than crunchyroll on the ps4. That's annoying.
