PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

Apparently Twitch's emoticons (Kappa, Kreygasm, etc) will be supported in the Live from PlayStation comments

I wonder if they've sorted the comments/broadcast UI being encoded into the stream.

From the pics in the link it looks to be the same.

They need to fix the boarder when you broadcast. So much space it wasted. The bottom with the timelaspe is pointless. There doesn't need to be so much space devoted to that. The left side and top boarder is unnecessary. You can go full screen but i like reading the comments. Just have that visible.

Does youtube support mean a youtube app or just uploading to youtube?
They announced both back at E3. Direct uploading using the share button and the YouTube TV app that's available on everything else.

Happy E3! As you may have heard during PlayStation’s press conference, the YouTube team has been working hard to bring YouTube to PlayStation 4, where you can find and play all of YouTube including music videos, gaming videos, live streams and more. Today, we’re delighted to announce that YouTube is coming to PS4 this fall!

Sharing your greatest gaming moments on YouTube will be a piece of cake on PS4, thanks to the dedicated sharing capabilities at the very heart of PS4. YouTube will officially be one of the social options offered when you press the SHARE button on your DualShock 4. After pressing SHARE, you’ll see the YouTube icon pop up alongside Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, and Ustream, and in just a couple of quick steps, you can go from playing your favorite games to publishing videos on your own YouTube channel. You’ll also be able to see your friends’ shared YouTube videos using the “What’s New” feed.

In addition to the integrated sharing functionality, a YouTube app on PS4 will become available (just like on PS3) where you can access your favorite YouTube channels, videos and personalities.

Hopefully it's a little more robust. PS3 app pretty much requires using a phone because it's so limited in functionality (no sorting, no playlists, etc).

Why can't PS4 download a game update WHEN IT IS INSTALLING THE GAME

every freaking game I play

install game

launch game

see download start

close game wait for patch

then install patch

restart game

SO DUMB

Really? That;s friggen hilarious. I have to do that on my PS3, you would think they'd fix that by now.

May as well add some info from the JP blog:
http://commu.jp.playstation.com/blog/details/20141017_ps4_update.html#live
Shareplay options:
ie4FLX7.jpg

There are three ways to shareplay:
1) Just the current screen will be shared but the host controls
2) Your friend controls your game, it's streamed to them while you watch
3) Friend and Host play together

For 2) only the host needs PS+ for 3) both host and client needs it.
You can't broadcast at same time and remote play doesn't work
There's a 1 hour limit.
Your friend can't take screenshots or videos.
I think a blanked screen is shown if the host leaves leaves the game for the ps4e XMB

USB Music Player:

Not much here, MP3 and AAC are supported. When broadcasting music played will not be included.

Broadcasting:

You can add effects to the broadcast I believe not sure what kind.
Also a message can be written which I believe is the purple bar.

Not sure if this is a new feature but I think the voice from the party you're currently in can be included in the broadcast as well.

Live from PlayStation:
Recommended channels by Sony will be a new category.
Searching for broadcast by title of game is new.
Archive viewing for Twitch for streams delivered from a PS4, I think
Ability to filter by language

And finally here's a super low resolution shot of the new library:

SO DUMB

It does need a manual "check for game updates" button. I wish it would auto-update everything, but it's limited to the last ~10 games or so.

Last time I read "very shortly" from Sony it meant three months later.

Shortly is the new Soon.

edit: Also, really wish they would increase the size of the camera when broadcasting. Really is no reason for being that god damn tiny. Also, the ability to place it on one of the other corners like Xbone does.

Almost there Sony. A couple things left to do though

1) Rip the music from USB to HDD
2) Suspend/Resume

After that, they can do stability updates for the rest of gen.

Agreed. I actually want the option to turn them off and be invisible when online.

Xbox One already has both features. Even the option to only hide notifications when watching video content.

Sony definitely needs to add friend notifications, but maybe they are rethinking how notifications are handled. Like different type of notifications. Like when a friend is broadcasting, or begins playing a game u are already playing. Just a notification seems so simple that it should've been available at launch. This is what I'm speculating that they are doing. Any other "friends notification" ideas u guys and gals can think of?

Xbox One has both of these too. Even the Xbox 360 had the notifications of your friends playing the same game.

There's not really much that can justify the notification situation on PS4 right now.

It should never have been a default notification. I shouldn't have to pare down bullshit like that.
Then people would be crying on boards for functionality that already exists but is turned "off" by default not knowing it exists.

Presenting the end user with options enabled quells those incoming questions as the end user can see what is available from the get-go vs not knowing it exists then riddling official boards for requests for existing features. Most people look for ways to disable things they see vs look for ways to enable things they don't know exist and that is important to note.

Its a smart decision to swing on the side of "on by default", IMO.

well then Sony is definitely behind on that. Time to catch up.

any word if soon we will get a twitch app like xbox? I would love to watch non- ps4 streams without going through the browser :(

Really? That;s friggen hilarious. I have to do that on my PS3, you would think they'd fix that by now.

It's not exactly like PS3. When you play a new game, yes, sometimes an update will start after you initiate the game, I wish it would be part of the overall install. However, after that process, any patches will automatically start and download in the background. I hated when on PS3 ANY time you started a game, a patch could be waiting for you (they recently added a button to check for an available update).

The three things I really want still aren't yet included, which is a bummer. Firstly, and least importantly, I want to be able to copy multiple saves in save management so I can upload things easier as well as copy saves to a flash drive when I do my personal backups. Right now it is very tedious to do these backups because I have to select individual games and the saves within each game. I wish it was like the PS3.

Secondly, the system needs folders or the ability to sort/arrange things. This is a bigger one for me because my list (whatever that stupid main menu horizontal list) is getting so long and unwieldy that it is actually making me buy/install less software because of how cluttered and cumbersome it makes the interface. If something is making me buy/install/use the system less or at least hesitant, that's a big deal.

Lastly, the system needs to let me stream my own music and movies that I have on my home server. Until this happens, I'll continue to have my PS3 hooked up, which means I will have no reason to ever use PlayStation Now... meaning they will get less and less money from me.

I would really like a little option to disable notifications when playing a DVD/Blu-ray, if not other video apps like Netflix too.

It seems like a simple thing, but the PS3 never got it either unless I'm somehow missing it. When I'm watching a movie, I really don't give a shit about who is signing in or out.

So many of my wants are really small options, just stuff to add flexibility to various functions already present. At least the adjusted library and whatnot looks like a step in the right direction.

Speaking as someone who really doesn't give two shits about OS functions, I agree. I would really prefer a completely barebones OS that frees up more ram for games (I believe the PS4 currently has ~ 3gigs of ram reserved for the OS, but I really doubt it uses anywhere near that much), however, I would love it if they would disable notifications when watching films/using media apps.

The wife and I use HuluJP on ps3 (not on PS4 yet as HuluJP gonna HuluJP), and I'm fed up of the notifications popping up. The ability to turn them off would be great.

I do wonder why they reserve so much RAM for the OS. Maybe for the video recording feature?
Hopefully somewhere down the line they can free up at least another gig.

They are, did you not actually read what they are adding?

Content Area and Library: PS4’s Content Area, which shows the latest games and apps a PS4 owner has used, has been redesigned to help make it easier to quickly find and access content. It now shows 15 of a player’s most used apps or games, and additional items will be added to a player’s Library. The Library on PS4 has improved filter and sort functions to help organize contented by type (game / app / TV & video), name (a – z or z – a), recently used, or install date.

So the rest end up in library? The last time I visited library it did not display stuff from my other accounts, just the things I owned with the current account. Has this been fixed or will it be? I haven't checked it for a while since I found library absolutely useless because of that.

Share play, Remote Play, Streaming Games . here are 3 gaming features that are NOT on Xbox.

Unless I'm mistaken (and I very well may be), there's Twitch Support in XB1. Remote Play isn't even out yet (whereas I have seen the "PS4s focus is on games" narrative since the console's launch). I'll give you Remote Play, since it fits the bill.

Will the usb music player just straight out play over every other sound in games, or will it automatically turn of the games music and integrate nicely into games?

It should never have been a default notification. I shouldn't have to pare down bullshit like that.
For the people that don't want it, it shouldn't have been. For the people that do want it, it should. It's a simple binary option, if one of the options isn't working for you then you simply select the other.

There is no right or wrong as to whether it should be on or off by default, there are personal choices as to which is correct for each individual.

I don't use it but somebody insisting that the option shouldn't be there for the people who want it, as I quoted, is just ridiculous. By that measure I would insist that Sony never add notifications showing when my friends log in and out, I'll never use it so I'm right to insist that it should never be added.

Or....they could make it an option which means that people who want it and people who don't want it are both happy with it.
