PS4 System Software Preview – USB Music Player, New Home Screen Colors, More

They've been saying that they're working on it forever but I don't get what is taking them so damn long.
perhaps updating the OS isn't as easy as all of us think it is...

Both Sony and MS seem to have different priority lists, and MS is definitely more the expert in software updates. I like that they focus on different features.

Speaking as someone who really doesn't give two shits about OS functions, I agree. I would really prefer a completely barebones OS that frees up more ram for games (I believe the PS4 currently has ~ 3gigs of ram reserved for the OS, but I really doubt it uses anywhere near that much), however, I would love it if they would disable notifications when watching films/using media apps.

The wife and I use HuluJP on ps3 (not on PS4 yet as HuluJP gonna HuluJP), and I'm fed up of the notifications popping up. The ability to turn them off would be great.

On the PS3 you can do this

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/notification.html

Pause / Resume Downloads?
Friend list / notifications / optimization?

Yeah, these are biggies in my opinion. Nothing more frustrating than going to log on and start playing MP, then a 1.8GB patch starts downloading (even despite standby downloads, sometimes the timing is just off).

And the only other feature is some sort of friend management. We're not geniuses, we can't remember everyone forever. Let's have some folders for 'Diablo' or 'GAF' etc. Just so we know. Also, the option to appear offline/busy/away/soloing/singleplayer/Not me as statuses are sorely needed.

Aside from that, 2.0 seems to pack a punch and let's hope they're working on other feature requests.

Unless I'm mistaken (and I very well may be), there's Twitch Support in XB1. Remote Play isn't even out yet (whereas I have seen the "PS4s focus is on games" narrative since the console's launch). I'll give you Remote Play, since it fits the bill.

When I said Streaming games I meant PSNOW (Gaikai-Onlive) style.

I was talking about the update wars.

I agree too - there will be talk regardless - it's fanboy war fodder as well as marketing leverage. One must simply look at the threads on Gaf and the sly digs thrown around all the time.

If Share Play is really as good as it sounds - when it hits with the rest of 2.0, PS4 OS feature wise is simply better overall all things considered IMO.

Adding twitch emoji stuff into Live with PlayStation seems like another half step.

Why dont they get a dedicated twitch.tv app that is the full twitch experiance? Is it one of those weird cases where someone in the Japan office doesnt want people watching streams of Nintendo games or something?

how many of those devices had numbers like the PS4 in Sept '14?

all right then.
Huh? This must be the worst attempt at making a witty post I've seen all week. What I said has nothing to do with sales numbers. If you read my post correctly, you can see that I'm just saying that I'm not concerned about a feature that lots of other devices in my house have. It wasn't a dig at you. But whatever floats your boat, if you want to feel like you "won" the conversation then so be it.

I was talking about the update wars.
By far the most ridiculous thing this gen. In a time where people have multiple consoles, smartphones, Blu-Ray players, PC's/laptops, tablets and even things like Smart TV's and media boxes some people are still raging about their PS4's not being able to fulfill their media needs. Sure it's unacceptable but hardly a disaster. Although something I agree on is that basic features like pausing downloads and promised features like pause/resume are still MIA and that's ridiculous. But I'm pretty old fashioned regarding these things and I only boot up my consoles just to play games.

Microsoft just made it so kinectless users can use the "Xbox, record that". Pretty cool.

May as well add some info from the JP blog:

Shareplay options:
ie4FLX7.jpg

There are three ways to shareplay:
1) Just the current screen will be shared but the host controls
2) Your friend controls your game, it's streamed to them while you watch
3) Friend and Host play together

For 2) only the host needs PS+ for 3) both host and client needs it.
You can't broadcast at same time and remote play doesn't work
There's a 1 hour limit.
Your friend can't take screenshots or videos.
I think a blanked screen is shown if the host leaves leaves the game for the ps4e XMB

Thanks for the info. I haven't really heard too much excitement around it, but I really do think SharePlay is going to be a neat/unique feature.

I think SharePlay will get serious attention after it launches. I mean, Live from Playstation wasn't even on my radar as a feature of the PS4 prior to getting mine, and now I check it out every time I turn my PS4 on to see what people are playing, check out any unreleased game streams, etc. SharePlay has the potential to be just as big. I can't wait!

I suspect it's taking a while because when they do screenshots they're going to do it right. Just as with videos you save with "Xbox record that", I'm sure screenshots will be automatically uploaded to their servers and shared on your activity feed with friends.

This just comes off as excuse making for Sony. They were criticized for the PS3's lack of OS features for years. They chose to keep the OS dev team locked away in Japan and very little has changed. A YEAR after the PS4 launch and they still don't have some very basic features working.

I think the SharePlay feature is going to be cool for about two minutes after people try it, and go "wow, there is a lot of input lag doing this. Kinda hard to play this game being streamed halfway across the country".

So, are you guys going to keep the blue background (if you dont install a theme). If not, what color are you going to change too? I am thinking Gold, or Grey.

(Yes these are real and indicate when the new colors look like)

Does the visiting client have to download the game first or is it just being streamed? If it's all being streamed then I would be worried but if you download the game and sync up like a multiplayer game then I won't be.

Going Gold all the way.

I really liked the monthly color change on PS3 along with the dimming to black that occured with sunset. Hopefully they can add that option back in with future updates.

It's gonna be streamed. Having to download the game first would defeat the point.

Watch MS implement remote play through PC and everyone lose their shit. Besides phones(haha), they don't have anything to even do remote play with like Sony, so that's kind of moot.

I'm not even going to lie... remote play through PC would cause me to lose my shit. I don't have a Vita so I can't remote play on PS4, but remote play on PC would work for everyone, and would also mean that I could let someone else remote play my console as well...

...I've just convinced myself that it would never happen.

Hm. Will probably try out dark blue, but I think I might stick with grey for a while. Unless I find I theme I really want.

Oh, in that case you're right in that one as well.

I think it isn't designed to be a fully native experience, it is more meant to allow you to give friends a taster of a game you own, like a richer, interactive twitch stream, nwhich then maybe encourages them to buy the game. For that I think it'll be ok.

Not if it was free like the time trials on PSN Plus and because it's not being streamed the quality would be better.

Yea but the idea is to be able to quickly share an experience with a friend, or request their help on an game area. The other person having to download the game itself before they can join... for something with a 1 hour time limit, would be mostly pointless, and rarely used.

The 1 hour trials on PS3 were mostly useless for a similar reason, never bothered with it even once, as it would have taken me longer to download the trial, than it I would have been playing it for.

Just like remote play with the Vita... oh wait.

Is it going to be perfect? No. But just like remote play (and dare I say PSNow - not the prices but the actual gameplay) many people will find it works well enough.

I'm pretty sure with Share Play, you download the section to play it, it doesn't stream. When you invite someone in FarCry4, they have to download that level to play it.

I thought at E3 our one of the conference's where the FC4 devs where showing it off, they said you would download the coop map you were invited to play. You only play little chunks, not the full game...

yep, having to download, then install for 10+ hrs before i can play it for 60 minutes was too much of a nuisance... simply too much time.

I think they might really do wonders if they offer store trials via PSNow in the future.

As to the Share Play - giving my nephews access to my games is going to be the best feature ever.

I would hope not. Even if you only required that level, the amount of common assets that'd be required for the game to be playable at all would often leave you with a pretty substantial download (hence why demo's are so large these days). The odds of your friend actually being on that level by the time you've downloaded it aren't great.

So Xbox not having screenshots is "to do it right" but Share Play sucks because giving it to someone in China will have lag?

Thats really funny.

Shareplay is using the same technology as remote-play and playstation now - it is streaming. Far Cry is doing something unique which allowing upto 10 friends to download the multiplayer client.

I was going to bring up him saying that MS is waiting on screenshots to do it right but saying that Sony prioritizing different things is just giving an excuse to Sony, lol.

I like BruiserBear for the most part but it's clear that he is in a frame of mind where MS can do no wrong with the OS and Sony can do no right with it.

lol, to think about it I only tried it once too.
