PS5 price to rise in Europe, Australia and New Zealand

I'm just wondering if the people who were complaining about Switch 2 prices are going to give it to Sony now that, for the 2nd time here in Australia, we've had a price increase for a console that came out 5 fucking years ago?! The tech inside hasn't gotten any better, so why are prices increasing 5 years later?

Just to add to this topic, this is why we shouldn't engage in idiotic console wars, just pray that Microsoft actually stay true to their word and release a next gen console and pray that it is actually competitive. Because else this is what happens when Sony dominates the market, they have no reason to keep their prices in check so they don't, corporations are not your friends.
It'd be good if GAF for once at least tried to not engage in dumb Xbox vs Playstation arguments.
Imagine a world were MS got their ideas to fully work ... always online, drm , gamepass , buying out the third party industry to "choke the competition" ... yeah sorry but they already gave us the legacy of paying for online gaming .... we are better without them and their shitty ideas imho. They never brought nothing of true value to console gaming, outside a handful of good IPs at best.

Competition is good ... but this one? Nah Im good.

Australian Dollar isn't doing too hot over the last 4 years, it's been a steady decline. Maybe that has something to do with it?

This comment has nothing to do with actual reality man.

Btw you know your PS5 would cost only 415 Euros if it wasn't for the outrageous 20% VAT you get slapped with? In the US the PS5 is around $540.

Europe has always been getting the best deal.
What's the taxes on USA normally? I'm reading it's about 8%? That would mean the PS5 Digital would be around 430 dollars after taxes.

In Europe, considering Eur to Dollar exchange rate, it is 570 dollars right now, doesn't really look like the best deal lmao. I know there's more stuff to take into consideration, but i bet Sony makes more money per console sold in the old continent than in USA

But they can afford doing this move, right now PS5 is the only platform to play Fifa with Xbox being missing and PC version being shit

console price rise is a one off problem, but their shitty drifting £70 controllers and rip-off PSN with cloud save gatekeeping is where the real money sink is.

When they put PSN up to £90 I figured their would be an outcry and they would roll it back, alas that never happened, so I ended up just playing more multiplayer stuff on PC and have saved a small fortune, so their loss

Unlike in Europe where the prices stated are the prices paid since retailers/manufacturers include all taxes in the posted price, no taxes are included in the posted US prices for any product.

Euro area has an average VAT of almost 22%.

That means to buy a disc version PS5, 22% of that 499 Euros is taxes.

That means if you strip out the VAT from the cost, the PS5 disc version is given to Europe for around 410 Euros.

Meanwhile the disc version here in the US is 499 (which includes no taxes unlike in Europe) which bring it to around $540 with an average tax rate of 8%.

That means Europe gets the disc version of the console much cheaper than the US.

Where did you get the 570 from btw?

Console launches since (at least) PS3 had price parity between Europe and USA. And yes, Europeans paid less because VAT was included.

Sony already changed that with Pro - 700$ and 800 Euro.

But increasing prices many years after launch is just fucked up...

570 dollars is 500€, which is the digital PS5 price after taxes in Eur, but you are right it makes more sense to calculate pre taxes prices.

PS5 DE is 413€ in Spain pre VAT for example, which is almost 470$

You are mixing the PS5 Disc version from USA to the Digital one from Euro on your example, the disc one is 549€ here, which would be 454€ pre taxes, or 515 dollars, so still more expensive here, but fair at least.

Aaah I thought the disc version was still 499 Euros there.

But yes, we should always compare prices with taxes/VAT stripped out of the stated costs.

No idea but hearing Americans complain over paying $80 USD for Mario Kart World when we are paying close to, if not more than that here and have been since the start of the release of the PS5 is infuriating.

Why will there be any outcry for the PSN?

According to the pundits, the PS5/Series X and S generation is the last console generation so no need to worry about that! Same as they said for the PS4 and PS3! Consoles are dead!
Even if the PS6 only sells 40 mil units there'll still be a PS7. As long as there's enough people buying in order for it to make sense as a business, yea the scope will shrink the price may go up, specs may go down but it'll still exist. Sony still makes Walkman even if pretty much no one buys it.
