Shows you that
  • they feel the need to increase the price of the base unit, indicating real economic pressure
  • they had as MASSIVE profit margin on the optical drive, thus being able to significantly lower the price on this one in order to make the deal not seem as bad

Rewarding Trump by getting other countries to pay. They can't increases prices in US yet as tariff situation is too volatile. For the payers/Americans

I am physical believer as well as pro so my plan to get a ps5pro this years is still standing.
But maybe I get switch2 instead not such much freetime right now.

My DE is 5 years old by November. It cost me 399 flat.

Never would I imagine this would be the cheapest this system has been, and will be.

Recent Astro Bot bundle was also 399 and some shops had it even cheaper than MSRP (for 370-380). So technically not the cheapest. Though paying ~50 more for 5 years of entertainment might have been worth it lol.

Europe PS5 Digital Edition – €499.99
(No pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive)
Did the Ps5 Digital Edition launch at €399 back in 2020, or am I misremembering?

This is crazy stuff..

It did. Then it got a price increase to 449 2 years later or so and now it's 499. The only exception was recent Astro Bot bundle priced at 399.

Anyone looking to buy PS5 slim right now, grab Astro Bot bundle for 399 quickly before it gets more expensive or unavailable.

It's clear that selling hardware below 500€ has become really challenging.
Prices are generally going up and not down.
I doubt that PS6 will be launched at less than 599€ for example.
But quite frankly it's in the US where the price should be raised, but they won't do it because they consider that market too strategic and highly competitive.

Pushing Pal consumer to the PC ecosystem, again. This is what's happening right now in Europe.

The day Cerny is retiring Sony will be eventually be done in Europe the same ways Xbox currently is. I can't wait for them to Blame US tariffs for the low European sales. PS5 is already down YoY vs PS4 and it won't improve. Gabe is already getting excited about those profits that are coming.

I know there are a few factors playing a role here, but still.. I'm playing games since 35 years and have therefor witnessed quite some generational leaps in terms of videogaming hardware. But this is the first time I'm seeing price INcreases (yeah, fucking plural) - especially for an already 5 year old device. It's getting ridiculous.

Really wondering, when or if at all the price hammer is hitting the US market. May be Sony are holding on with their decision due to the ongoing tariff warfare?

How can the prices of something that is supposed to go down with time due to better manufacturing efficiency and old components becoming cheaper we going up? Explain this to me please.

It's like companies think videogames consoles are Veblen goods lol

€399.99 in Europe and £359.99 in the UK.
Second Price increase actually and the second time the US hasn't been affected.
And looking at some of the articles people aren't impressed this time round.

That's precisely the problem.
What traditionally used to happen isn't happening anymore.
Shrinking a chip using a more advanced node costs more and not less, the extra price of the node is not compensated by the smaller chips.
It doesn't help that it was accepted that a single company (TSMC) could build a virtual monopoly because others refused to invest and some failed to stay competitive like Intel.
There is also inflation everywhere, costs of energy, shipping, etc are just getting higher.

In any case this is Europeans funding the impact of Trump's tariffs on the US consoles so that they don't raise the price there...it's shameful but it's clear where their priorities are.

They have a monopoly in Europe, so they can do whatever they want. Microsoft literally stopped selling xboxes here, so :messenger_grinning_sweat:
Unfortunately, yes. I wish Microsoft didn't give up on Europe and instead continue to bring the heat to Sony. Anyways, they're out of the hardware business, so it's not coming back ever. Sad times.

This, or us will get price increase later.
Sony likes money and knows xbox isnt competition anymore, ofc they gonna keep raising prices, in the US too, for sure, they just using boiling the frog tactics to get less pushback xD
Those tarrifs are like pandemy or cryptoboom, aka excuse to make more profit coz why not, sony like every corpo in the world loves money most :D

Well this is unfortunate for people who want a ps5.
I don't think it's anything to do with tariffs though, I think it's the weak value of the euro, combined with costs going up across the board.
If you're still looking for a ps5 and are not happy to pay more, just vote with your wallet

This is also because Xbox is so weak. They have very little competition and they want to set themselves apart as the more premium console compared to Switch 2.

I think you just hit the nail on the head, isn't the Switch 2 like £400 or something
Then again the disc version hasn't increased and neither has the Pro and they've reduced the price of the Disc Drive.
That means the Digital Edition is now the same price as the Disc Edition with Astro Bot 🤔

Just checked at a local retailer online and they still have some PS5 Digital Edition Astro Bot bundles for €399, but I expect those to be sold out very shortly, and then the new price will take effect. :lollipop_pensive:

They can't mess with their biggest market, so buffering Tariffs through secondary
Biggest single market that's cheap to ship to.
Sadly as MS learnt, its also small enough to be completely dominated by the competition if you do focus on it.
Luckily for Sony they have no competition.... unless.

With switch 2 getting more third party support and pc gaming growing i don't think they can behave like they have a monopoly.

Season 4 Wow GIF by The Office

Except in the next 3 months US can reach an agreement with the EU and the tarrifs will not take effect. Will the price go down?

Season 3 No GIF by HULU

Sony seizing the momentum for more corporate greed. I got the Steam Deck, I'm out.

£429 for the digital?

What the actual feck.

Just bought one for £329 with Astro bundled in.

What a time to buy.
That's the smart way of doing it.

I said it earlier in the thread DO NOT BUY the ps5 unless it's on sale.

Sony know they can't reach their FY targets with these prices, so they are having to do sales pretty much every quarter to give it a boost. That's been the pattern for almost 2 years.

Oh wait, aren't Sony buffering a 125% tariffs on china through price increases WW? So basically they want to keep PS5 affordable in USA (their biggest market) vs $50 increasing prices in other regions?

Emmm the issue here is not a deal between US and EU, consoles are not made in EU, they're made in China, I doubt things will go well there in such a short term, there will be a fight.
The issue is not the price increase that is understandable looking at current market conditions and the fact that everything has become expensive, it's not like Switch 2 is launching at a cheap price and PC GPUs prices are just outrageous.
The issue is that Sony should have the balls to increase the price in the US instead of squeezing things in EU and Japan but it's also clear that every company does strategic calculations, just like Nintendo is making western markets pay for the cheap Switch 2 Japanese price because for them success in that market is vital.

Absolutely fucking scum of a company. Price for production goes down, raise prices WW to cover US market on their fanbase footing the bill while having record breaking quarters.

Probably the shittest thing Sony has done since rootkits.
