PS5 Pro owners, how silent is your unit? Any noticeable Coil Whine?

When it's lying there dormant or in action?
When it's idle on the dashboard it's pretty much silent for me. I held the phone 5cm from the console with a noise measuring app and it said ~33 dB powered off, that's the room background noise which is mostly coming from an aquarium. I could then possibly read an increase to ~34 dB when I powered it on but there was fluctuations so could just be variations on room noise. It's very silent. And no coil whine!

Then fans ramp up with a slight vrrr occasionally when it's working, also for like 2 seconds when it's powered on but then comes down to silence at the dash.
Fans ramping up can be heard from the couch if I turn off the audio but it's very very silent and nothing worth mentioning. Haven't measured the fans at full load but i doubt it's going up much.

This is when it's horizontal with no disc drive installed yet if that matters.

My base PS5 has coil whine and while that don't show on a noise meter it's extremely annoying because of the high frequence and character of the noise. Getting rid of that is the upgrade I feel the most going from Base to Pro.

My PS5 Pro is louder than my fat PS5 base with a slight hint of coil whine but unless I'm playing on "mute" it's not noticible. My PC with a rtx3080 is way louder.

I can hear the fan running, but I wouldn't call it loud or noisy. More like merely perceptible when you get right on top of the console. The cooling fan in my racing wheel is louder.
As for coil whine.....well....I didn't hear any from my OG PS5, let alone the Pro, but then I'm 56 years old and work in a noisy factory, so even if it was there, I probably wouldn't hear it. I mean, I hear coil whine all the time, it's called tinnitus.

So, just like my OG PS5, the loudest things about it are the beep when I turn it on, and the disk drive access.

Even though the fan noise is noticeable, it's not bad it seems to just stay constant the entire time.

Played some gt7, dead space remake and alan wake 2 and nothing causes the fan to go crazy or anything just stays at the same sound level.

I noticed my fan always doing the same speed/sound.
I can play a PS4 game, PS5 or even Pro enhanced or right now a PSP game from PS Plus Premium lol. It's always the same.
There might come an update maybe for this or I will check in a couple weeks/months if I can replace the fan and get one of those "quiet" ones, lol.

Been playing loads of different games now since launch. And thankfully I've not heard mine once in all that time. For me its just like my OG. No coil whine either.

Yeah I found that a bit odd it just stays the same speed regardless of the game.

I booted up tetris and the fan speed was the same as playing a much more demanding game like Alan wake 2.

I ordered mine from playstation direct had a not too loud but still annoying kind of whistling noise while playing games.
I ordered a second one from amazon last week which is now silent (in that sense that you only hear the fan but nothing else).

So glad I was lucky with the second one. Will send the first one back to Sony.

Silence even after installing the disc drive. (no disc in the drive) 💙💙💙

Its been 2 weeks now, my ps5 pro has been very quiet.

im playing doom eternal with ray tracing on currently.

the only sound i hear now is my table fan spinning in the same room , or if my ps5 pro disk drive is spinning for a while.

My ps5 pro just beside my monitor vertically so you can imagine how close my ps5 pro is .

i have to stick my ear to the ps5 pro cover to actually hear some sounds while gaming is running.

I wanted to test mine to give my opinion but now that I'm finally able to use it I've remembered that I live in a very noisy neighbourhood with no isolation in the windows. So… I don't really know.

Anyone know if they're still using nidec fans? Those were the ones that sound the worst with a high pitch sound. My og PS5 had one of those fans and I had to loosen the screws holding the fan to reduce that sound. The other two much better fans are NMB and delta.

Ok so, which fan is the quiet one?
I know mine is the same loudness (lol) on every game. Be it a PS2 game, PS4 or PS5 (Pro enhanced).

What is worrying me more is the Internet speed. I did all the settings, 5ghz, DNS settings etc like my old PS5 but I only get 90mbits. Phone and old PS5 get 250.

I don't want to send it back but did I get a faulty one?

Edit: or is it just the PSN?
Just tested laptop, also full speed.

Edit: Guess it's the PSN, got full speed now as well. Will change fan in a couple months when I can find replacements.

Also the animated background has aliasing but no one mentions it. :D

It was silent for me... until I picked up the disc drive for it. Now it won't shut the fuck up.
If you are not playing a disc game, just remove any disc in the drive. It reads the disc constantly and vibrates a lot. Og ps5 is the same.

Thanks, I have now done that. It's just annoying because it should check the disc once when it powers on, and then when I load a game that the PS5 knows is a disc version so it can verify the correct disc is inserted. It doesn't need to spin up the entire time that it's turned on.

You're the second person who has mentioned this and I can say it doesn't happen to mine. It's will spin when powered on and, if you don't start the game immediately or are not in standby, it will spin when the game is started. Other than a quick buzz every once in a while there's no disc noise. At least it's something they can patch out like they did after the original launched

Mine is nice and quiet. I think the fan could sound a little smoother but I'm kinda spoiled by Noctua fans. It's a little buzzy but I can't hear it on the coach and especially during gameplay. While I've never been a huge fan of the look of the PS5, it's a well engineered machine.

For what it's worth mine had a slightly annoying whine. I tried some rubber orings under the fan mountings which helped but then I eliminated it by tightening all the visible screws under the fan panel. Now all I can hear is the woosh of the fan.. delta fan here

I thought this was an interesting video. Slim is noticeably the loudest of them all with the Pro only a tiny bit louder than the OG.

What do you mean by under the fan panel? I'm curious because I have a delta fan and that whine is just enough to annoy the hell out of me

Removable panel that the fan is under, there are a number of screws that hold the chassis together, I tightened them all a quarter turn, not had any issues since.

Really... Well I guess I'll give that a try when I get home. To be clear, you mean by removing the white panel and the screws that hold everything else underneath said panel around the fan just tighten all of those about a quarter turn and no more weird pitch sound? Just air?

Essentially yes. I had already quietened the fan a little by tightening the four fan screws but it didn't eliminate it and then I tried the remaining 2 or 3 screws and hey presto no more annoying noises. I can't promise that will assist you but it did mine.

It was annoying me enough that I had started looking for fans on AliExpress but no longer needed.

Opened mine up and yeah - coil whine and noisy-ass fans that kick up as soon as you launch anything.

Gotta say, between that and the dismal performance of stuff like Silent Hill 2, and the myriad games with no patch at all.... this is really one of the most disappointing consoles for me personally.

Off to play the return lotto.

Ok so I decided to do something for the sake of science!

I originally had the Delta fan and it was definitely in my opinion anyway fairly loud. Not obnoxiously loud or even super loud but significantly more than my original PS5 launch model. It wasn't so much the fan being loud but the sort of pitched whine that it did. Search 350hz sound on Google and it sounded like that and it was just enough to be annoying to try this. I went to AliExpress and purchased a FOXCONN fan because many people claimed that it is the quieter of the two fans. While I do believe this is somewhat subjective as to what people perceive as "silent" consoles or what have you, I did have what I would definitely have called a "silent" launch PS5 while others claimed theirs were loud. No coil whine either on that unit. Speaking of coil whine, this console does have a little bit absolutely tolerable coil whine that I only hear if close to the console which I am not. I sit about 4-5 feet away from it.

On to the fan comparison. I installed the FOXCONN fan and for me at least I can definitely say this fan is the "quieter" of the two fans. This is moreso with the almost total absense of that sound I described earlier and it is much more the whoosh of air that I only hear this time. Still it is louder than the launch PS5 but much more acceptable. If anyone is interested in just replacing the fan instead of going through the trouble of exchanging the unit and continuing the fan lottery, I suggest trying AliExpress and getting the FOXCONN fan. For me that experience was fine I don't know about anyone else who have used them but for me at least the part came within about 8 days and perfect.
