PSA: ISP port reset for better gaming and speeds

If you're having a crappy time online gaming or even browsing in general check your ISP settings or contact them to "port reset". Often overlooked but a vital maintenance task for your online gaming quality. I've worked with ISPs and understand how shitty your connection can get simply by connecting poorly to your ISP from time to time. It's like a connection lottery, some great, some crap but you don't get to pick your numbers. You can reroll the dice though.

A good ISP lets you run your own self tests in your account login, just choose port reset and let the gaming gods shine upon thee. Rinse and repeat as needed to get the best for your gaming. Call your ISP if you don't have self testing tools available. For example my gaming went to shit for days, downloads were 50+ms with 40Mbps so I smashed the ol' port reset and instantly back to this goodness (I pay for a gaming connection of 250/100 fibre in Aus) -

Some other things to look into, if you're so inclined -
  • Demilitarised zone in your router for your console, maybe not so great for your PC gaming and cheaters.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) for your gaming device, set an internal static IP address or MAC and list it as priority internet traffic on your router. Forget the kids Roblox, I need to slay in Apex.

Or you could read an old dog's shameless thread bump - Tweaking your Internet connection | How far will you go?

Broadband will historically be a worse connection compared to symmetrical fiber. If your fiber is not symmetrical it's most likely broadband backbone with fiber last mile. Or your ISP is cheap lol. Broadband is more like a first come first serve in signaling so a reset will help from time to time.

Definitely agree with QoS on your home router. And anyone with a little more advanced networking gear, security policies and things like packet inspection can jam things up infrequently from time to time.

If you're any it technically inclined, research and self procurement of your own router and networking gear can go a long way but often times a bit more costly. Is it worth it just to game? Eh. Lol.

Yeah, consoles are easier to just throw in a DMZ and call it day. Less cheater risk but PCs are a bit more susceptible there and more config is better.
