Hackers released an enormous cache of 13,000 passwords and credit cards

http://www.dailydot.com/politics/anonymous-lulzxmas-passwords-credit-cards/?fb=dd

The most significant leaks came from online video gaming networks like Xbox Live, the Sony Playstation Network, and Twitch.tv. There are were breaches of Walmart, Amazon, and Hulu Plus accounts, as well as keys to computer games such as The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins. Also, a whole lot of porn sites.

Agh. How many times am I going to have to change my passwords this year!?

If this were true, no financially responsible company would operate outward facing services on the internet.

I work in the industry, everyone knows this is a risk you take trading online. You balance the risk, the reward, and the cost of the mitigation options you put in place. Then you pray you never have to use them because a big botnet will simply soak your provider just as surely as they'll soak you. It was only a few years ago that Paypal and Mastercard were hit at a cost of millions of pounds.

I have been reading some interesting posts in this thread explaining DDoS attacks and how they work.

I've been thinking about the nature and severity of these attacks. I have to wonder that if a bunch of hackers could cripple purely "recreational" services for a day or two, then what would happen if such effort were focused on other services that have a much more serious impact on our daily lives? What if the DDoS were aimed at a government agency, bank, healthcare provider, or another group where the flow of information (or lack thereof) can have a profound effect on someone's life?

It's been said that nothing can be done to totally prevent the possibility of a DDoS. While that might be true, there must be something that other companies and organizations do to minimize the impact. Otherwise, we would be hearing about these attacks in the news much more often, especially if they should ever affect some important, vital service.

Even in the online entertainment sector, considering all of the network traffic that reaches Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube I've never heard of them getting shut down for days at a time. Why have they been seemingly immune from this problem while Sony isn't? Have they ever been targeted to this extent before?

In light of all of this, is there anything Sony (and other companies) can do in the future to reduce the chances of their online networks getting affected by a DDoS attack? If not, then should we fear that other "important" sites and services could also get knocked out at hackers' whim?

My brother, 15, is out of his mind bored because of this. I wish I could watch netflix on my ps4 but whatever I got my wii u and da i to play. Still sucks Sony has no more excuses because this keeps happening to them. Wtf are they doing with that ps4 and plus money?

You can watch Netflix if you've installed the app man!

PS4 owner here, and yeah, gotta admit that the Sony apologism and sycophancy is a little irritating.

I made the decision to jump to Sony on the back of the initially announced XBone approach of hamstringing people with heavy online requirements, so I can certainly see a bit of amusing irony in finding myself now as a PS4 owner in online limbo.

drive by trolling is frowned upon on here.

So if backseat moderation m8.

and it was merely poking fun at Sony being the slowest top recover from a ddos attack. Isn't that what you do Diddy great loss worth humor? I myself bought my dad drive club for Christmas in his own request and now he can't play it. He sends me fb messages all the time asking me for updates, we're all suffering.

My silver lining is reigniting my Vita love.

wait so digital ps4 games don't work offline? what the fuck

They do.

However some games have problems when servers try to connect but can't (disconnect ethernet or wifi to fix), and some people experience licencing issues (which is not an issue if your PS4 is set as your main system) when PSN is down.

13,000 accounts over that many services? I'm not buying it. That's way too few accounts for even one of some of those services to be an actual breach.

Christmas is over.

For us normal people. The PSN infrastructure group apparently never got a Christmas break because of some shitty kids running scripts for the lulz.

It's not only unfunny to make fun of the innocent party that's sacrificing time with their families to get your viddy games working, its also a bit heartless. Grow up.

Anon supposedly doing some ish right now, going in on Lizard Squad and possibly doing something to alleviate stress off the PSN servers (according to the other thread and twitter)
