PSN connection problems (12/24)

God damn with the Sony apologists on this site. I realize you can't fully prevent a ddos attack but it sure appears that Microsoft continually does a better job of mitigating it's impact to customers. If PSN were free I think we could all accept that you get what you pay for but that's no longer the case. If Sony wants to take money from each of us every year than it's time they start investing in their infrastructure to a point where 'a bunch of kids' can't for all intents and purposes cancel Christmas for gamers and the like. It's embarrassing and I can only imagine the confusion and disappointment it's causing for parents and children not in the know. Get your shit together Sony...

Then don't pay for PS+ simple as that. There is a belief that MS handles online better than Sony. So pay them your money. Don't pay for + then. It's that simple.

Agree, ffs Sony get ur chit together after this is all said and done with. Why pay for a service that can be shut down any given time by some kids?

They can communicate with their users.

And not on Twitter. On the PS Blog.

You'll get the same message you've been getting. Did Microsoft say anything when their servers went down for hours last night?

You'll get the same stock message. "we're working to restore service. Thanks for your patience" That's not going to fix the problem.

Yeah, don't you dare complain or voice your concerns. Just accept it or go elsewhere...

You can voice your concerns but this seems to be an issue that is greatly upsetting you. If it's that bad give the competitor your money and make them your primary online platform.

I hope this entire ordeal shines light on how ghetto Sony's services and entire user experience is on PlayStation. It's getting ridiculous.

Where are apologising for Sony? People are just saying what is right. If Sony fucked up and got hacked then I would be going mad at them. But them getting DDoSed is different. MS will also deal with DDoS attacks better like I said on the other page.

Any message is better than no message. The PS Blog acts like everything is normal. That is not acceptable. I would appreciate them owning up to it.

because more people look at the ps blog than twitter

In Twitter it will be buried in the stream. On the PS Blog it will carry more weight.

the fact that this is still down is ridiculous....SONY's a multi-national, multi-billion dollar company....at least something should be working....

the fact that i was playing this morning for 4+ hours just makes this even more annoying...it was working...

i guess its been nice to catch up on some TV shows i've fallen behind on....

I think this was on the news, my Mum was like 'don't turn your Playstation on, you'll get hacked'.

I took off all the wires from the PS4 and then hid all my games just in case.

Yes. Sell your console. Lose your library & friends list. Buy another. Start again.

Yes its working for some but they are still being hit by ddos attacks.

And this is not something you can just do something against so..

I mean Im pissed but I can sympathize

So lets continue to bitch, complain, swallow misinformation like kool-aid, and blame everyone except the people actively rendering the service inoperable.

He may have went a little overboard, but the mis-placed anger and irrationality in this and the other thread is becoming staggering.

Are you serious? You truly believe there's -nothing- Sony can do and that people should just accept this?

Yes.

You're not wrong, and that is how a lot of DDoS mitigation works. It's a several step process.

1. Darknet of Mitigation Company reports that there is a lot of DDoS like activity starting to flood a specific IP range.
2. Said IP range is used by Company B who has hired the Mitigation Company to help protect them.
3. Mitigation Company analyzes what their darknet honeypots and scanners are seeing, identifies the type and scale of attack.
4. Mitigation Company alerts Company B, and tells them to switch their routing tables for their services to funnel everything through Mitigation Company's servers.
5. Now Mitigation Company is filtering all the DDoS junk flooding in, using their expert knowledge. They are also in contact with all the major ISPs and trunks along the route the DDoS is coming from, but a lot of this comes from other nations. There's only so much you can do in the telecoms industry when dealing with national divides, and how responsible other countries might feel about what's coming out of their ISPs. While the target of a botnet exists in one place, the botnet itself can exist in multiple countries, all around the world, all attacking at the same time, from all those locations. We're talking millions of PCs all simultaneously doing a thing. It's like if your entire yard suddenly exploded with ant nests, and you have one spraycan. You can call for help, others that will come and spray, but that will take some time. Or you can hire a full platoon to stand in your yard all day, just in case. And if ants never come, wow you're spending a lot of money to have people stand in your yard.
6. Mitigation Company is using its knowledge of the style of DDoS to mitigate the attack somewhat, but there are always false positives, and so users of Company B are still seeing timeouts, disconnections, or other issues.
7. Mitigation Company is also reporting back anything they learn about the DDoS to anti-malware companies, so that the anti-malware people can create innoculations or removals for the style of malware that might be causing this particular DDoS.
8. DDoS starts to dial down, Company B can resume normal operations, and Mitigation Company gets paid for services rendered if they're not already on retainer.

Wash rinse repeat each time the malware changes, the style of attack changes, etc. It's an arms race. The problem being, while anti-malware and mitigation does get more complex and sophisticated, botnets grow exponentially and have brute force on their side. If a botnet can't take down the datacenter of Company B, it might try to take down the ISP that provides them access, or the ISPs that connect to the ISP that provides them access, and so on.

Yes pretty much.

Lol why not? If you feel this is a constant issue why continue to put up with it? Why continue to pay $50 bucks for a service you feel isn't up to par with the competition.

Complaining on a forum won't change anything. Taking your money elsewhere will.

Thats the response you have? Seriously?

Yes. Sony or no company for that matter can't do much against a DDoS. Again if you and others feel PSN is garbage why pay for it and complain about it? Do I think Sony can improve their network in certain areas? Yes of course

But they some in these threads are talking is that PSN is NEVER reliable and is constantly down and that they've had more problems then ever.

So why continue to pay for a service that you deem shit? Why not give your money to the competitor that most agree have a better handle on this sort of thing?

Yes pretty much.

Do you understand what it is that you quoted?

There are companies all around the world who need to be able to defend from these kinds of denial of service attacks. The idea that it's acceptable for a service to be down and out for over 36 hours is laughable.

Sony or no company for that matter can't do much against a DDoS.

If this were true, no financially responsible company would operate outward facing services on the internet.

Again. You can mitigate it but you can't outright prevent it.

Wait, was XBL up the whole christmas? My friends said their XBL was down for majority of Christmas.

amazing that it's still down. spent all day doing stuff and just wanted to check out some warframe tonight.
Although it was down for most of the day, during the evening I played for 8 hours yesterday (5 hours on Destiny pvp, found matches easily). stopped because i went to bed, not because it went down. But this is just my experience lol

You can verify by going to "destinystatus.com" and putting my PSN: keltin99
i used my warlock for 1 hour and a half. (Scroll down) Started a new character Titan and played for 3 hours. It should say I played 10 hours ago.

It was.
Came back sooner though, while Sony still got some problems.
I see, i did play yesterday though. I even played pvp on destiny but i guess others may still had problems

There is no full proof way to prevent a DDOS due to the nature of a DDOS attack, it ends eventually, but any company is susceptible if the attack is big enough for the servers.

Dunno if anyone posted about this, but i work in retail in Portugal, and we had tons of customer come in (parents, with zero know how) about their new bought Vita's not working properly. All the packs in Portugal have digital games, so, all the kids that opened their Vita's in Xmas day, haven't been able to play yet.

Just sad.

I went to a couple GameStop stores today for their B2G1 Free sale and noticed this. At first I thought they were busy from people buying lots of games, but a majority of the line was customers returning Vita and PS4 systems.

Hackers released an enormous cache of 13,000 passwords and credit cards

http://www.dailydot.com/politics/anonymous-lulzxmas-passwords-credit-cards/?fb=dd

The most significant leaks came from online video gaming networks like Xbox Live, the Sony Playstation Network, and Twitch.tv. There are were breaches of Walmart, Amazon, and Hulu Plus accounts, as well as keys to computer games such as The Sims 3 and Dragon Age: Origins. Also, a whole lot of porn sites.

If this were true, no financially responsible company would operate outward facing services on the internet.
Well it is true so I guess there are no financially responsible companies operating outward facing services on the internet. No matter how good your mitigation strategy is a large enough swarm will overwhelm it.

I think this was on the news, my Mum was like 'don't turn your Playstation on, you'll get hacked'.

Good thinking, hide the games quick!

Still down here, The Crew is a paper weight.
