PSN connection problems (12/24)

Dunno if anyone posted about this, but i work in retail in Portugal, and we had tons of customer come in (parents, with zero know how) about their new bought Vita's not working properly. All the packs in Portugal have digital games, so, all the kids that opened their Vita's in Xmas day, haven't been able to play yet.

Just sad.

It's hilarious that Sony doesn't even acknowledge this on the official PS Blog.

Absolutely hilarious.

OK that's just freaking despicable. Have you tried to help them redeem their codes via SonyEntertainmentNetwork.com or the respective PS Store and then have the games start DLing via the webstore?
Maybe that'd work?

it's down also

You have till Monday. As long as this is resolved by then, what need is there to extend?
none if they get it resolved, hope they do...

sooner even, feels bad for the guys working on this

So for me, PS3 is at 100%, Vita, PS4 and PSapp all have limited functuonality (no store, friends list is hit or miss). Is this the general trend?

I shouldn't have to log into PSN to use a totally unrelated app in the first place.
This. Yeah NBA Game Time doesn't work either, not the end of the world as I can watch games on my iPad but shit man too much is tied to the PSN. All in one media centre sounds great, if it relies entirely on PSN though? Gulp!

Up until last night I haven't even tried playing since Festivus. I fired up my PS4 last night and was able to play TLoU multiplayer without any problems, I actually didn't know there was a problem until I tried checking the store to see if the movie The Interview was there and the store wouldn't load. I could still play online without issues. I'm in California btw.

We actually lent the games they want to play.

I work for a a big deparment store that has the customer needs in mind above all.

Been down a day for me. It isn't Sony's fault they got DDoSed is it?
Please stop with this "it's not Sony's fault"... Sony is providing service we pay for.
Personally I don't care who did this, Sony is responsible for preventing stuff like this from happening. Service falling apart and not working for full 48 hrs (for Christmas if I may add) at this stage is not only embarrassing for Sony but downright frustrating for consumers.
No way to log-in, set up new accounts, download digital games (Christmas presents), play online, etc .... And still no official word other than some "copy and paste" BS on Twitter. Unacceptable!

What the fuck?

I can't use Youtube without signing into PSN? What stupid bullshit is this?!?!
I usually got stuff to entertain me when psn goes down but not getting to use basic shit like this during the holidays when old friends come over has really soured me on playstation, I'll pick up the next console for dirt cheap next time because it's a big piece of shit for everything media related, it's not simply a battle between the console makers and unless Sony realizes this they are better of selling insurance.

You can not stop a DDoS attack.

Well said.

I think Live and PSN got attacked at the same time and Live seems to be 90%+ up for all their users. LS states they've stopped the attacks (not sure I believe that) but even then, shit is still not functioning. That is ridiculous.

Sony does have to extend every PS+ user with 2 days or whatever amount of service lost, period. Im not paying for nothing anymore. If they will charge a "premium" for PS4 users, we should get a service that reflects that.

You can design your network to make DDoS attacks harder, or let it keep working (but more slowly). Also, didn't the attack stop already? I think Sony just took PSN down, I don't think they are being attacked anymore.

A few people are still getting on. So it is probably still getting hit or the attack was so big it messed something up. I didn't say anything about you can't try to prevent DDoSing. But in the end if people have the cash or the know how and want to do stuff like this, nothing can be done to stop DDoSing.

Edit: ^^^ To be fair, Sony are supporting a lot more customers than MS are.

If they're not able to get this sorted over the weekend, I hope they're able to extend the current sales an extra week. :(

MS have far more servers then Sony, what with them running Windows etc. So of course they could deal with it better. But some people are still having trouble getting on Live, granted nothing compared to PSN.

It's a bit annoying how incompetent Sony is compared to MS. I know software vs hardware companies, but that still doesn't change the fact that they don't compare to them in this department. From what I've heard of Sony Pictures leak, they have some monkeys running their software teams overall.

I really hope this is fixed by tomorrow.

And it also has millions more customers on ps4's trying to login, and has probably been hit the hardest. MS also has an insane amount of server parks that are not just used for XBL.

I hope so too...or they have it fixed before the 29th. I've been waiting for The Walking Dead Season 1&2 to go on sale. It finally does, at a great price, and I can't get it.

The reason why DDoS works, is because it uses the way the internet "talks", the Transmission Control Protocol, against itself. TCP is one of the most fundamental building blocks of the Internet (it's a part of the Internet Protocol Suite, or IP). That's where "TCP/IP" comes from.

The basics of TCP come from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, from a paper published in 1974. It was a genius bit of work, but it didn't anticipate the sheer size of the internet today, how reliant people would be on it, and how easily it could be subverted.

There isn't just one style of DDoS attack, there are many, that's how numerous the issues with the TCP protocol are. And the best people can do, for now, is "mitigate", lessen the effects, slow things down and try to filter out the junk, etc. But it's a war that can't be won, because as long as TCP has its fundamental issues, people can abuse it.

The solution would be - write a new, modern protocol. In a way, that's not unlike how operating systems improved over the years. Windows 95 had so many exploitable issues, some got patched, but others were a hard-coded issue in the core of the OS. So Windows 98 comes out, those issues not present because it was a new core. Although that core had it's own issues. Even so, the viruses that used to plague home computers in the 90s, don't exist anymore because they simply can't function in the modern ecosystem. Except now we have a new paradigm: malware. Still kind of like a virus, but different enough that conventional protection doesn't catch it. Antivirus software doesn't defend against malware, although some antivirus companies are starting to release anti-malware as an addition to their antivirus. Anyway, malware is usually non-destructive, and the kind that add your computer to a zombie botnet are designed to basically do nothing to ever alert you to its existence, because if your computer started acting up, you might go looking for the problem and find it. Until the botnet is told to do something, and then your PC starts broadcasting its contribution to the DDoS attack.

So yeah, a totally new internet protocol that doesn't allow itself to be used for DDoS attacks! Sounds great, entirely possible - except you have to replace the entire current internet, with this new internet. And who will lead us to this brand new land? I'm sure every corporation has an idea, and perhaps there are a few coalitions that might form to suggest it. But you've seen how impossible it is for companies to agree on a global standard. Everyone wants to use the things they own the patent for, so that they can make money off ideas. It's a mess.

I sometimes think the only reason the internet exists as it does today, is because it was lucky enough to be born before anyone could really claim ownership of it. But that means it has no steward, nobody is responsible for it, or takes care of it. And therein lay our problem.

We need to replace it, but can't.

DDoS explained far better then I can. Thanx Miktar. (Taken from the Lizard Squad thread).

How do we know they have been hit harder? Sony hired a guy that didn't know shit about protection just to give him a raise instead of someone competent at their position for Sony Pictures, they just don't seem to put enough emphasis on this.

YOU CANT DO ANYTHING ABOUT A DDOS. If they aren't DDOSing MS and still are with Sony OF COURSE the Live servers will be up.

The simple fact that a few people are getting on the PSN shows this issue is still going on.

God damn with the Sony apologists on this site. I realize you can't fully prevent a ddos attack but it sure appears that Microsoft continually does a better job of mitigating it's impact to customers. If PSN were free I think we could all accept that you get what you pay for but that's no longer the case. If Sony wants to take money from each of us every year than it's time they start investing in their infrastructure to a point where 'a bunch of kids' can't for all intents and purposes cancel Christmas for gamers and the like. It's embarrassing and I can only imagine the confusion and disappointment it's causing for parents and children not in the know. Get your shit together Sony...

They can communicate with their users.

And not on Twitter. On the PS Blog.
