PSN connection problems (12/24)

It's down for me too, I don't even know why we are paying ms and Sony this $50 fee anymore. High traffic is not an excuse, it's fucking Christmas. Anyone with half a brain knows that. They should have prepared for it instead of spending time on how much money they made.

it's not always having issues; also not every other week. More like almost never.
Right, so I just imagined not being able to sign in to PSN, or not be able to send friend requests, or not being able to join party chat, or being locked out of my digital games...

They are both being DDOS'd though right? It's not just high traffic.

it's not due to high traffic. Lulzard Squad is DDoSing both. People claiming its high traffic are in denial of a bunch of kids being able to send some traffic to certain servers...

its offline now due to the DDoS. same thing a few weeks ago. Apart from that there haven't been any issues apart from relatively slow messaging for a few weeks. (I'm on there every day with multiple devices).

+10 :P

you shouldn't renew ps+ to show sony that you won't stand their incompetence any longer

What's the prof of that, though?
My bet is on Christmas Day and nothing else.

Well there goes my purchase of the Jackbox Party Pack. Stop giving the little shits attention and they'll get bored and stop.

It's still down? Are there any signs of improvement? Such a pisstake - I wanted to play TLOU!

I'm so glad that these problems never occur in PC games.

if only. Steam kicks me and a mate out of our co-op games once every 2 weeks due to failing servers or due to maintenance. Almost always late at night (1 AM or later) in Europe.

Is it working on PS3? My daughter is playing Minecraft on the 360 right now without any problems, I'm not home so I can't check my Xbone.

Just wondering if they are different and separate systems

Yeah...attacks for close to 24 hours now...? c'mon, its just high traffic, thats all...like it happened on the 360 a few years back...
Yep.
Funny how people are talking ddos every time something falls down, now.
In a sense, they are right, but I do believe the only ddos happening right now is coming from all the players trying to reconnect at the same time. The login servers are probably what is failing at the moment.

Cable and Internet services will credt you back whenever they have downtime that is more than reasonable. Why doesn't XBL or PSN do the same when they are down for a few days?

There are multiple companies that track DDoS attacks, and make that information public. The two easiest to check, both show an unnaturally high amount of DDoS activity, which is clearly DDoS and not just "high volume", because of the nature of the attacks.

Except when Steam was DDoS'ed multiple times this year and held offline for almost a day at one point...

I don't understand - my brother was playing GTA Online for a couple of hours. But when I switch to my account, I cannot login. :/

That's the nature of a DDoS attack. It causes a wide range of services to have intermittant connectivity issues, it isn't always a simple binary "on/off" for services such as PSN, there are multiple datacenters, multiple regions, and the timing of things means you might get lucky and find an unclogged route in, or not.

EDIT: Starting to think GAF should start a "how the internet works" thread and explain in detail how these things happen and play out. By now though this is just an incomprehensible rage thread (which is utterly understandable, of all days this is a bad one for there to be issues, in conjunction with a DDoS - which is exactly why they're doing it right now). So for my own xmas sanity, I think I'll leave the explanations to someone else, since knowing the why isn't helping anyone.

Sorry but there are regular issues with PSN (you only have to read on here and elsewhere to see that not everyone is happy with the network), some of the issues might not be hugely problematic, but many of them are annoying, messages taking forever to be sent/received has been an issue for the last few months now with no sign of a fix, it's not just an issue that's popped up in the last "few weeks", it's been that way ever since Destiny got released (which is also oddly when the entire network took a turn for the worse).

Christmas does bring about its own problems though and although it's not really acceptable for it to not work, it's become somewhat predictable over the years that they do struggle and if it is indeed being DDoS'd then that doesn't help either.

Ah k, well this sucks, when will 24 hours of downtime be? I would think after 24 hours they would say something.

The network isn't completely down, I'm signed in and can see my friends list but can't access the store.

They tweeted 4 hours ago that they are working on it

Can't even get access to the free game code download voucher bundled when buying a new PS4. Bet this really sucked the christmas morning cheer from a lot of kids. Hopefully it gets fixed shortly.

Someone with Networking knowledge enlighten me. I'm picturing internet traffic being something like a freeway/highway in that once a blockage occurs, as long as people are still trying to travel through that blockage, it creates a backup of sorts. So that even once the cause of the blockage is removed.. the traffic can still be hindered due to everyone still trying to travel that route. Would that be correct or completely wrong?

Another way to say it would be.. if say.. Holiday traffic to PSN and Xbox were backed up starting last night... and a large amount of people were still continuously trying to log in through various means... would the service still be backed up even if the initial cause of the backup was removed?

You are believing wrong then. A group have literally said they're Ddoss'ing the servers, but nope, of course it's only the people who got the console for Christmas.

So Lizardsquad claiming they are DDosing both. I guess with the amount of new people signing on it doesn't help either.

Honestly it seems like Lizardsquad is mainly targeting days where there is already a high amount of traffic going on anyway. Seems like their deal is only DDoS'ing when the networks are already struggling.

you can see the attacks going on here http://map.ipviking.com/

this shit is infuriating and I don't care who's the blame.
sony should at least be adding days onto my plus subscription .

Ddos or not, making the transition from xbl to psn this gen has been painful.

I honestly think I've had more problems with psn in the last year than I did with xbl the entirety of the x360's lifespan.

No, that hasn't been my case at all. "Slow messaging" is the least of the issues ( by the way, how is taking 10 minutes for a message to send "relatively slow"?). It's great that you haven't had many issues, but for myself and many others its been a shitshow.
