This makes me quite paranoid - I mean, I would like to think Sony aren't a bunch of incompetent idiots who can't properly secure their network, and if I can't trust a company as big as Sony, who can I trust?

I mean, I love Steam and trust Valve, but how am I supposed to trust them with my CC info when a company as big as Sony it down?

OH HAI GUYS PERSONAL INFO AND MAYBE CREDIT CARD INFO HAVE BEEN STOLEN, THANKS FOR WAITING!

Yeah that's what pisses me off. Thanks for the warning, asshats. But what could have been done any way? Log in and change it? Fuck, PSN is down!

Sony :lol

What the fuck is E3 going to be like this year?
Microsoft and Nintendo making jokes about it, Sony either pretending like nothing happened or introducing a new, completely paid-for online service "with guaranteed safety".

Man, that last one would be a killer, wouldn't it? :lol

Anyways, this sucks for the PSN people. I'm kinda worried this could ever happen to XBL: I hope not.

My TV just started displaying porn all of a sudden.

Or at least that's the excuse I'm going to give my mom if she walks in on me while I'm watching skinemax.

Oh man, thanks for giving me a laugh that I needed after seeing this shitty news.

It seems Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal is not very thrilled about Sony waiting 6 days to announce a possible personal data breach. Here is an open letter Sen. Blumenthal wrote to Jack Tretton:

Wow, didn't expect that. This is going to be a big story for a little while, particularly because it's a slow news week (argh, that fucking wedding!!).

How do I find out what info I have on PSN?

I cannot really remember what I put there.
Me neither, just checked all my Do Not Reply mails from Sony until I found the right one, but they just said my password was successfully changed, without mentioning it. I'm good for changing my mails/facebook/twitter/ebay and amazon passwords.

I also have no doubt in my mind that the recent "jail breaking" of PS3 systems is DIRECTLY linked to this compromise. Indeed, Sony is at fault for not finding a way to permanently detect and remove said systems from their network to prevent them from prodding around. That still doesn't alleviate said jerk off's from their liability, however.

Oh really? What evidence supports this claim? A PSX mod claiming this is all over Rebug users downloading free games from the devnet?

I'm more pissed about my account information being leaked.

If someone steals your CC information, it's not like you'd be liable for any of the charges... However, changing the password on all my accounts is a daunting task.

Patrick Klepek from Giant Bomb:

"For those who were asking, Sony has just confirmed to me there is currently no way to determine what password you were/are using on PSN. If you're worried at all, you should probably change your password used across the Internet."

If that is true, which for any Software company in 2011 ought to be true that at least dampens it a little bit.

Still: Change your passwords if you re-use them in several services.

I'm sorry to say that he was talking about if you couldn't remember what your password for your PSN account was. You can't find out now that everything's down, so yeah. He wasn't saying the hackers didn't get the passwords, just that we can't find out what the passwords were if we had forgotten.

THANK YOU!

I just checked and the card they have on file has since expired. This makes me feel better.

Tacking on my thanks. I knew I had got a new card and number recently, but forgot if I has inserted that information in to my PSN account. Luckily, I am safe.

Thanks a million.

Fucking Sony, what a joke. I hope nobody tries to defend this blunder.

So going by that statement even if we cleared our CC info long ago from PSN there's still a chance the number got stolen?
This is what I've been trying to find out but this thread is moving a hundred miles per hour...

Still catching up on the thread, but just in case it hasn't been posted already..

To see what credit card you used with PSN, check your emails from "DoNotReply@ac.playstation.net"
I think this should probably be put in the OP for people.

I just checked my emails and dammit, my current CC card is the one I've used on PSN. Not taking any chances, getting it cancelled.

Well this does suck alot, don't really care about my information and I will just watch my CC like I do everyday. But if this does hurt Sony really bad then i'm stuck with crappy Microsoft and Nintendo for console choices. Maybe Naughty Dog/Sucker punch/FROM will start making PC games then everything will be all good again.
Sony will be fine dude. These scandals are like a biyearly thing for them.

Thank goodness I've only used pre-paid cards for my account.

But holy shit Sony. E3 is going to be a circus this year.

i will just change my password when the network comes back online. no big deal. my credit union is good with monitoring my CC charges (and based on what they have said, there likely has been no CC #s compromised). My anger is with the hackers that did this, not with Sony.

I just wanna play SOCOM and MK Online!!!

I believe Sony shut it down before it could get that bad.
Hopefully. The weird thing was they said PSN would be back up "in a day or two". Then out of nowhere they're rebuilding the entire network.

Same here, but keep in mind, they still have your address, birthdate, etc..

It's entirely possible someone can obtain credit in your name potentially, so keep an eye on that.

Any mod able to add the email address to the first post to reassure some people their credit card info is safe potentially?

Lol, I just checked my account info from PSN and this was my name : ggggtr fddrrt

I feel good that I always used fake names and info when I signed up for services like PSN.

There are a lot of big companies getting attacked lately.

Sony's response is damn right disgusting. 6 days for this? I feel sorry for everyone worried about this right now.

with 67 million (reported) accounts, surely it would take a while for impacts to be seen?

Actually its more like 77. But you'd think, it would be near impossible for one to get their CC stuff stolen. Never can be to careful though.

with 75 million users.. there is no way they took everyones info right?
Sony's FAQ:

Q.5 How many were affected? How many per each region? What is the latest status of PlayStation Network registered account/ operating countries.

Our investigation indicates that all PlayStation Network/ Qriocity accounts may have been affected.

Um... Business as usual?

It sucks and it's terrible, but they'll move on and talk about what they were going to talk about before. This won't change much. They may emphasize network security during the PSN section of the conference though.
Nothing about what was announced today was business as usual, and its going to be incredibly awkward when Sony stands on stage with smiles and trys to get consumers excited about 1 single thing.

"Hey everyone, remember us.. Sony? We lost all your personal information, passwords and maybe your credit cards ... Sorry about that, but check this ... UNCHARTED 3!"

I wish Sony the best but 6-7 weeks is probably not enough time to heal.

Great, just when I'm having those I better balance my checkbook days to make sure I won't be broke in two days-days. Dear Hackers, I have no money. Please don't steal it.

I've posted this before. Essentially, I do work for an online marketplace. Even if a customer chooses not to store his information, in the purchase histories, certain account level types do have the ability to still see the full credit card information. I'm not saying that this is 100% the case with Sony, but just because you don't store the information doesn't guarantee that the information wasn't available IF the other credit card #s on the network were compromised.

He's saying Sony can't get the passwords, which might imply they were hashed somehow. Might.

Sorry for my bluntness, but:

Are there any reports of anyone's Credit Card/Debit Card being utilized as a result of this hack?

Yes, I got a phone call of the bank of a suspicious transaction of 1 eurocent to a charity fund.
The bank already blocked the card and verified it with me if it was indeed fraud.

The hackers check the card this way. If it is a positive a large transaction will be made.

Like I said before I only use my card on PSN, Amazon, Ebay and Play-Asia guess which one was hacked.

Holy shit! I'm sooooo glad I took my CC info out weeks back when I first heard about this hacker thing. WHEW!!!! Damn! Damn Sony!
I took it off a while ago after the whole Gawker fiasco. Changed my passwords to unique ones across the board for all my internet accounts, took forever but now it's saved me in this case (as far as duplicated data that is). Hopefully not having my CC info stored means that that data is safe. Time to go change my password again though.

You link that, as if that was supposed to prove him wrong, but PSN has more accounts than any of the incidents you linked to. Provided the worst case scenario (all accounts stolen, plus credit information), this is indeed the largest data theft of all time involving usernames, passwords, and credit. Of the items listed, only one exceeds this in terms of number of people affected, and it didn't relate to either usernames/passwords or credit, just names, and the privacy failure was not exposed by malicious action.

So, no, not hyperbole much.

My issue is that in those cases, they were real individuals, real information being compromised. How many of the PSN accounts are actually unique people? Of those unique people, how many actual of those use valid information? Of those with valid information, how many actually linked credit information?

MrPliskin said:
I absolutely did say that, and I was wrong. While there is no evidence that this information was compromised (at this time) it is still "decent" of Sony to advise people to take appropriate action.

I will say that they way in which they handled this was piss poor, and I have already stated that. Their customer management is terrible. However, I still understand that the people at fault (more so than Sony) are the "hackers". The low life scum who feel they can act without responsibility for their actions.

Even if they are clearly at fault, it was sony's job to let the consumer's know immediately if anything was happening. People are going to see articles on this topic and blame sony for letting the information of millions of accounts out, even if there's a lot more to the story.

Nothing may even come of the information leak, but the leak is still present regardless of what caused it. I only brought up you making that post because I can see your point while making it, it's completely unbelievable they didn't inform us about this earlier. It's a really shitty situation for them, but a lot of people won't forgive it.
