PSP FW 5.50 details (subfolders, internet search and stuff)

Have a fun! Enjoy!
Old?

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/04/20/psp-firmware-v550-update/

The firmware update will introduce an Information Board on the PSP system’s XMB (XrossMediaBar) interface. Those of you who have a PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) may be familiar with this feature, which displays news and updates from the world of PlayStation in a scrolling ticker in the upper right-hand corner of your TV screen. Now you’ll be able to read up-to-date information about upcoming games, new content available on PlayStation Store, and other news right on your PSP whenever you’re at a wireless Internet hotspot.

In addition, we’ll be adding a few more enhancements with the 5.50 update:

* Memory Stick improvements – You’ll be able to create and access sub-folders on your Memory Stick PRO Duo for music, videos and photos. Separately, the available space required to download a file from PlayStation Store to your Memory Stick has been reduced significantly.

* Internet search for games directly from the XMB – You’ll be able to easily search the Internet for information about your PSP games. Select the icon for the game, hit the Triangle button, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu to get search results based on the game title. This feature was added to PS3 with the recent 2.70 update.

* Trend Micro trial – PSP’s Internet browser is a great tool for checking out your favorite Web sites on the go, and we’re teaming up with the Internet security experts at Trend Micro to make the Web browsing experience safer and more secure. With the 5.50 update, you’ll have the option to access a free trial of two Trend Micro services:
Trend Micro Web Security uses Web reputation technology to block PSP owners from accidentally visiting a Web site that may contain malicious content designed to steal personal information and confidential data.
Trend Micro Kids’ Safety uses URL filtering technology to prevent children from accessing Web sites that feature inappropriate content.

Should go live "soon".

The folders idea is about time. Everything else ... *shakes head*.

I don't see the need for a anti-virus/spyware system for the PSP or PS3.

trend micro "trial"? as in a service you'll have to pay for after the trial runs out?

unless the PSP is your main avenue for accessing the interweb, I don't see how this is necessary.

Information board on PSP?

Is this going to be REAL folder support or that stupid and clunky "Album" BS like on the PS3. I hate that crap. I want to be able to flag items and say "move to folder x" quickly and easily.

EDIT - If it's "real" folder support, will you have to use a PC to do it?

Hmm, I wonder what it's doing to reduce file sizes?

Apparently, you needed to have double the space of the download to download games from the PS Store. That's what I read, so I don't know if that is certain.

Embrace the future of tagging! Hard-coded folders are a dead end, because then if you want things to exist in multiple folders you have to have multiple copies of the file. While the PS3's system isn't quite perfect (there needs to be the ability for multiple category tagging), really, the old idea of folders is broken and outdated at this point.

Look at an application like iTunes, and what it does with music files. One huge collection of files than then can be filtered and organized in any way you like all through smart filtering. That's the future. (Yes, I know there are still the small group of crazies out there that continue to organize their music by hand in carefully-crafted folder schemes in the Desktop/Explorer/whatever. Technology is and will leave them behind.)

This ever going to get cracked? I mean they are still only on 5.00 CFW??
Dark-Alex only releases cfw for new firmwares that add features that are worth cracking. I assume there will be a m33 firmware for this update.

The problem with PS3's system is that there is no way to easily do it other than tedious file-by-file album editing. Then, at some point, some PS3s decide they need to rebuild the media index (or something) and all of your hard work is out the window. I and others have had this happen. Needless to say I did not bother to do it again. If there was some way of defining a folder and then easily tagging multiple files to "live" in it, then that would be a massive improvement.

Besides, the PS3 method doesn't allow you to have files in multiple folders either. It really solves nothing and is just a terrible implementation.

I just hope the PSP method involves a working folder implementation that is easy to use, move files around, and doesn't reset itself totally for no apparent reason.

The information board is weird; it works for the PS3 because a typical user is more than likely connected on the internet constantly. Not so for the PSP (I wouldn't think?).

Trend Micro free trial? That's ok..

Like I said, the implementation we currently have on the PS3 isn't perfect. However, the idea of tags and then smart sorting is a far better and potentially powerful one than the outdated idea of hard-set folders.

That isn't totally true: you have the option to sort by All, System, or Album. So, as of now, they can live in two separate "folders" (System and Album).

The information board is that news ticker thing top right that we all turned off five minutes after the firmware update that introduced it, right?

Hey Sony, if we could get subfolder support on the PS3, that would be peachy. It would make your interface somewhat ... usable.

actually the more interesting is...

why did they go from 5.03 to 5.50. The jump is huge.

I think they're gearing up for 6.0 unveil E3. I hope 3.00 comes for PS3 as well.

Haven't we figured out that new numbers don't necessarily mean much? Or is that only the case for PS3?

Can anybody explain subfolders to me? I know it's not folders within folders since that's what I'm doing now. Is it exactly what the others here are posting about, tagging files?

Not yet.
But if say, there WAS a PSP that can be always connected... InfoBoard, XMB Search, and browser security become... relevant (not for people on this board, but from general public perspective).

If they're able to have an Information Board which requires you to connect to the internet, I don't see why Trophy support isn't possible. But then again, it took them this long to get sub-folders.

Or being able to manage folders and the directory structure from the PSP itself as opposed to doing it with your PC.

I sure hope that's what it is. That would eliminate so many headaches.

Coming in PSP2 with friends support

...I bet.

Holy shit, subfolders. Took them 4 years.

It's not as big deal either. I mean, you can already create folders via PC, and considering you use it to copy files to the PSP, why bother creating folders beforehand on the PSP itself?

Edit: Ah, sorry. It's subfolders. PSP doesn't detect them even if created on PC.

Playlists for gods sake PLAYLISTS
PSP supported m3u playlists pretty much since launch.
The problem is it never supported more then one per folder -_-, and the fact you can't edit them with PSP itself.

Don't read too much into this. Sony typically ignores standard version numbering practices. The fact that they're on 5.x right now even though they're only on the third hardware iteration of the system is a perfect example.
