PSP MLB 2006 - My Impressions

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
I can't help myself. I buy every baseball game I have a platform for. So, picked this up at lunch though I planned only on getting MVP.

First off, how you feel about this game will depend on how you feel about the console title. Because it is an AMAZING adaptation. So far, the biggest difference I've noticed is that it hasn't crashed on me like the PS2 game would every other game--can't help but be happy about that. Basically, the UMD is a paired down version of the console title in nearly every way.

Graphics - I can't believe baseball is finally on a handheld like this. Some of you could give two shits, but having a full 3D version wonderfully rendered like this is one of the best moments I've had with a PSP so far (and I've been pretty damn happy before this). It's remarkable how good this looks compared to an already pretty game on console. The stadiums, sky, ball movement, etc. you won't be dissapointed in comparison. Where the difference does come in is in the number of animations. Not in anything that effects gameplay, but MLB on PS2 was jam packed with small side-animations that added a lot to the game. This version is missing nearly all of those. No catcher toss back to the pitcher, no pictures when showing line-up cards, etc. Basically they cut away the fat but it seems to have been the right decision as the rest runs so smoothly. There are all kinds of camera views still available whether pitching or batting, though nothing that will let you get super close to fielders. That works for gameplay for the most part, though I will say as someone who has played a lot of console baseball, it's a bit of an adjustment doing so on a screen this small.

Sound - Damn, nice job. Full crappy soundtrack, full announcing (and it's good play by play) and crowd noise. Extremely impressive.

Control - Fine. Nub works great for fielding, though is a bit touchy during pitching. D-Pad is useable for almost everything. Has some of the same idosyncracies as the console title (pre-loading, etc.) but very functional. Your control scheme is as complicated or as complex as your difficulty level chooses.

Modes - Quick play, online or season. You can have many different lengths of season and the season mode is FANTASTIC with full roster management, trades, schedules, stats, awards, etc. If only it had the massive career mode or franchise I'd be perfectly happy. This is a nice second best and better than what I expected. It also has the excellent feature of the console title called Fast Forward that allows you control over how much of a particular game you'd like to play. Very important for a handheld though the sleep function pretty much makes it a non-issue unless you can't get back to your game for awhile. I noticed free agents, but not minor leagues.

Customization - A+. All the options and multitude of sliders from the console version. Extremely impressive.

Online - Didn't try it yet. Hopefully tonight.

So...seems great on brief impression. Better than PS2 since it's stable so far, though it's too early to call. I wish it had that fantastic career/franchise mode but the season mode is better than I thought it would be. Wish some of the camera views were more zoomed during play, but there are many options and full replay (!!!) controls. Also, kind of wish in lieu of a franchise mode that they had gone MVP's route and added a few mini-games. But what's here looks great. Nice job, 989.

Awesome! Been wondering how the PSP version would stack up! Can you download updated rosters on the PSP version?

I may end up trading in my PS2 version towards this one. I absolutely love MLB for PS2 (I prefer it over MVP), but I've been getting tons of locks ups in the game. :/ If the PSP version has the gameplay down from the PS2 version I'd rather play a season in the palm of my hands! :D Plus I can put the game into sleep mode if I need to stop in the middle of a game!

Why don't IGN or Gamespot have reviews of this title? It's got full commentary? Interesting...

Going to pick mine up soon.. but no franchise mode? That fucking sucks..

Yup. The only strike against the game. MVP won't have franchise either in the PSP version. Some EA employee gave a BS answer to how franchise wouldn't work well with a portable system. Whatever. These guys get a free pass this year but next year I want to see full franchise modes in all PSP sports games (Starting with Madden 2006!).

Yes. The season mode is very deep. Trades, etc. Injuries too I think. It makes sense.

No, the animations are lessened. I believe some of the stances are the same, but little things have been removed.

Yea, no franchise SUCKS. MVP doesn't have it either. Tell you what though...if the season is as good as it looks...I can live with it.

It's no substitute for the console version (if it weren't so buggy) but it is a nice adaptation.

I don't know. I felt decent taking a chance because Che had played it a bit.

The commentary being here so fully along with the sounds...is pretty damn cool. Though I probably won't use it for very long (play by play).

Argh, I totally hate when Sony slips out a title without sending review copies to press.

Well, I should go pick this game up anyways since I liked the preview version so much.

Oh this is out now? Awesome!

I've always wanted a baseball game that I could stop in the middle of play at will, and with auto-sleep this is going to fit the bill quite nicely :D.

im gonna wsit till mvp comes out and wait for impressions before i drop any money on a basebal game. mvp is just so grea on the consoles, it would be hard to switch unless mlb just blows it out of the water

As much as I like this, I think MVP will be the game for me as well. It's such a fantastic console title. But...I'm a fanatic. And this has online play, etc.

i definatly understand where you are coming from but i dont think it would be worth buying now and in two weeks trading it in for 20 bucks toward mvp. maybe ill rent it

i think the deciding factor will be which one performs the best online. does mlb have cursor based batting or is it closer to mvp where you use the nub to guide what direction you hit

Is MVP online?

MLB has directional and timing batting similar to MVP. It's deeper the higher level you play. It's easier to adjust to hitting in MLB.

i assumed mvp was online, i might be wrong. actually come to think of it i dont think it is online. i might have to check mlb out. give more impressions when you play online

Sweet impressions,I'll be getting it either today or tomorrow :D

Cant wait to try out online play too for the first time on my psp.

From my two games, I've enjoyed it. The commentary is someone I don't know who's not Scully on play by play. Color is done by Dave Campbell. I hit one bug when Giambi hit a ball that rolled to the fence. The Sox outfielders ran to it and just stared at the ball. I'm guessing they were afraid that positive 'roid tests spread on contact. I tried just sitting Giambi on 2nd, but they wouldn't budge and I had to round the bases for the inside the park home run. However, this was on rookie difficulty, so I'm hoping it was just a product of purposely shitty AI.

Beyond that though, I like it. And if MVP is going to be 50 bucks, it will definitely hold me over.

*sigh*

I wanted another game for my psp anyhow, but how to pay for this? Well, looks like I'll raid the ol' dvd collection and trade some of that crap in when I pick up Jade Empire later tonight.

Thanks for the impressions Musashi....Hmmm, I might have to cave in and buy a PSP. Baseball is perfect game for PSP. Please do post how the online portion is like...

sweet impressions. so what would you say, is this a must buy for sports gamers? your impressions are so positive. i was wanting to wait for MVP on PSP but if this game is AAA+++ I will get it instead. so what say you? i know you probably don't wanna give it a numerical rating, but what would you give it?

Online portion is pretty basic. Go to lobby, get challenge, play. I was worried because I meant to start a room and ask one of you to play but instead I got an immediate challenge and accepted. Of course he took the Yanks. I took the Mets. Everything was fine until I scored a few runs and then he obviously didn't want to play anymore. Apparently he didn't know whether there was any penalty for signing off early, so I waited out his bullshit until the 7th where I was winning 14-0 and he disconnected. Strange, since as far as I know there are no kept stats or anything online. I didn't notice them anyhow. Maybe there are, I should have checked better.

So, there was a little lag. Nothing major. I wasn't even playing hard and I did fine. I'd say MVP lag level on console. Not ideal with the hitting, but not bad. I'd play GAFFERS or some stranger if I was hard up.

I don't know about AAA+ but it's the best baseball I've played on handheld by about 1000x. I would guess it will score far better than any other sports game out so far. Maybe. It's done well. It's a pared down version of the console game, and damn, that's pretty good. I happen to like MVP better on console, so I'm hoping that's even better. If you wanted a baseball game that you can play online and is at Sony 1st party prices I'd say hell yes, it's a must buy.

I've got this as well as TW Golf. Both are good games, but EA needs to do something about the load times. This game doesn't load half as much and it looks, plays and sounds better. I'm pretty amazed about the full commentary as well because it's so detailed. One thing I've found so far is that I need to put the batting camera in "wide" mode to see the pitch. Are you having trouble seeing the ball? It's tiny, but I've gotten somewhat used to it.

I picked this up as well.. Anyone having any issues with connecting to online games? I keep getting challenges, but then they fail...

Anyone have any ideas? I dont want another Twisted Metal Fiasco on my hands....

wait, you've played MVP for the PSP? how? is it out?

Online play works fine for me... I just wish online play had some record keeping functions.

Without them, it makes it hard to see who are the real gamers.

Having an absolute blast with this outside of the absolutely dreadful music selection (worse than any EA Trax set IMO). I really wish there was a Franchise mode, but I'll probably just end up doing an 81-game season once this 29 game one I am testing ends. The running system is a little frustrating because there's almost too many options for the game's own good. Make sure you read the manual first also.. if you're like me and try hitting X and a direction to throw, you'll keep fucking up and have no idea why. :lol

Yea, online allows cheesers too easily.

Really enjoying a short season I have going. Plays well so far.

Should have included a fantasy draft option for seasons. That would keep things fresher for longer.

I use wide view for batting, and behind the pitcher for pitching. It's one of the few games to have a good view for the second.

Bummer about MVP. But gives me longer to put off "which game do I want to play" :)

Okay after attempting to play this thing online with three different losers who all decided to quit, I have realized that the online component of this game is broken. There is no accountability for the reckless behavior of others, and as a result cheesers spoil the game.

On a positive note, the game plays great. I have no desire to play MVP after experiencing this great game here. It looks great, plays great, and offers a good challenge on All Star. Go get it guys, and maybe we can play some cheeser free games here.

To add to the MVP vs MLB comparison, I found a new IGN article comparing the two games here:

http://psp.ign.com/articles/604/604162p1.html

AFter reading it, I'm not getting either portable game now. I'd like to get MLB, but rosters are only current as of January and neither game will offer downloadable rosters. I don't want to do all the trades myself. For shame!

Rosters on both games, by the way, are current only as of January (although EA may make a tweak of this since its game is coming out later), and there are not downloadable rosters in the PSP versions of the baseball games this year. If you want Sosa on Orioles, you'll have to make the trade.

Matt Vasgersian is a great replacement. I enjoyed him in MLB 2006 and I enjoy him just the same in MLB for the PSP.

Surprised they didn't just take Dave Campbell out altogether. Since they removed many of his lengthier stories and diatribes, all that's left are a few quickie non-sequitors (and the ever-immortal "Yak!" comment).

I was hopelessly hooked on Baseball Advance a couple years ago. I generally don't like baseball games, but I played through an entire 162 game season of BA... I was also a huge fan of World Series Baseball on the Genesis. Now, I'm not a huge baseball fan by any stretch of the imagination (I'll watch the Twins in the playoffs), so rosters and all that doesn't mean that much to me. Is the game fun? Is it pretty easy to learn? Baseball Advance hooked me because the play mechanics were simple, and it played fast. I've tried to get into the first WSB for Xbox, but never really was able to get into it at all.

I've got $65 in trade-in credit burning a hole in my pocket. I'd wait for MVP, but that comes out the same day as Hot Shots Golf, and getting anything with Hot Shots will be a waste for me... Is this something I could dig?

One of the things I noticed in the screenshots of MLB is the lack of umpires/referees. Are they there in the final version?

One thing that has to be said.. there's way too many wild pitches and/or past balls.

I've noticed some, but I've also noticed that it really does seem to matter who your catcher is and how hard you throw a breaking pitch out of the zone. The thing about MLB that is sort of cool (this version and console) is that your breaking pitches don't end up where you put the cursor. That is only where they break, and a low or outside pitch with a decent amount of break can really end up in unintended spots. But yea, there are still too many.

I've seen a couple small buggy things, but not what I expected from 989.

Another interesting thing...the stat tracking and player information is insanely deep. The manual (I don't think) doesn't mention it but you can go to any player and hit circle. This brings up a player card with batting/pitching zones and other personal info. From there, hit the R or L and you can scroll to all sorts of screens including contract breakdowns, morale, scouting reports, etc. It's amazing. My only guess is that they did intend to have a franchise mode and just pushed all the stats/info from the console version in. Just the regular stats included is staggering. I also like (but haven't tried) that they included the Manage Only mode.

Sounds great.... what about loading times ??

It's about 25-30 seconds as it goes into the actual game. Which is a little less than on console. Sounds horrible, but baseball games have always been like that for some reason and with the voice and stadium pick streaming in, it seems acceptable since you don't see them anymore in game. It's a few seconds out of a game, etc.

It's fun and it's pretty fast. BA was a great game, but I thought that no matter what you had things set at it was WAY too easy. I doubt you'll find this the same at first. Like most genres, if you love a 2D playing version the switch to 3D will be jarring skill wise. But it has a lot of great features, including the fast forward, season length, sliders, etc. so you can customize your experience a bit.

Just an FYI to the online players in here. Not totally sure people are "quitting" the game per se. More like the Sony Servers keep killing the game.

I played 4 online games last night, and each time I was losing, and each time, around the 4th inning, I got the little MLB Icon thats in the bottom right corner, it went from saying "MLB ONLINE" to "MLB TRAFFIC DELAY" and then the game died, said my opponent quit.

Hopefully they will get that fixed.
