Just a theory, but what if you guess fastball [R+button] and leave the analog stick neutral (so you're guessing dead red on location). If the box turns red, you know it's a fastball at least... and maybe you can eyeball location... his fastball is hella slow anyway. If the box doesn't turn red, it's probably a knuckler, and if he didn't aim dead center (if he did, the cursor will appear) there's a huge chance it'll be a ball.
One thing MLB has taught me -- take pitches. It loves to throw junk, especially on Vet and All-Star.
