PSP pixel peeves proliferate

PSP pixel peeves proliferate

From the Dept. of We Tried to Warn You, Sony user forums are already starting to fill up with laments about PlayStation Portables with dead pixels and other screen defects.

The PSP's Japanese launch was accompanied by scattered reports of glitchy screens and Sony indifference to the defects. U.S. consumers can pretty much intuit the same from reading Page 13 of the instruction manual:

"Red, blue or green spots (bright spots) or black spots (dark spots) may appear in certain locations of the LCD screen. The appearance of such spots is a normal occurrence associated with LCD screens and is not a sign of a malfunction."

Translated, that means Sony and its retail friends get to decide when a PSP screen is defective enough to merit replacement. Clerks at Sony's PlayStation store in San Francisco, for example, appeared to be fairly generous with replacement requests Thursday, but results may vary with other retailers and Sony's customer support phone line.

Many internet folks seem convinced that dead pixels are exclusive to the PSP. Looks like a lot even plan to wait until a later shipment when "the problem is fixed." :lol

HAHA They'll be waiting until Sony releases the $600 Organic LCD PSP

I asked customer service at Wal Mart if Dead Pixels as reason for replacement would be honored. After a long blank stare, the clerk told me 90 days with recepit they'd replace with same item.

My PSP has one stuck pixel, dead center. Only notice it on the menu screens. Nothing to cry about.

I plan to beat the shit out of this unit over the next 90 days, while I wait for a screen protector to arrive for my replacement unit. :D

Same deal here. Even if I'm looking for it during games/videos/photos, I can't see it.

What's so funny about this story is that people that will be able to get a replacement for their PSP with 2 dead pixels could really well end up with a shittier PSP, with more dead or stuck pixels, when they do the exchange.

Which is exactly why I'm not going to take mine back.

Dead pixels not unique, but shitty warranty policy is unique. Besides, Sony doesn't have an awesome track record when it comes to first production runs of game machines. This is why I'm letting all the sucke. . . I mean "early adopters" take hold - at least until a price drop/non-bundle.

I didn't have to buy a bundle with my PSP. That's something haters tell themselves to convince themselves that they don't need the system.

Heh, I'm sitting in the back room at EB tonight and opening mine. Any problems and I'll just try another one. :P

You didn't have to buy Sony's "value pack"?

"I see dead Pixels"

No matter how Manabyte tries to spin it i think its pretty awful to play close to $200 for a system and then only to find its not in optimal condition out of the box through no fault of your own.

oh well first Gen sony hardware.

oh well first Gen sony hardware.

See? THIS is what is causing the damage control...

It isn't related to the fact that it is first gen Sony hardware. This is simply a common LCD problem. I DO believe that they have been more forgiving of LCD flaws in manufacturing in order to keep the price down, however, so dead pixels are more common than usual, but that doesn't mean it is really a problem in the same way that early PSX systems overheated and PS2s ran into disc read errors.

ok so you are saying everytime i buy something with an LCD screen i should expect it to have dead pixels? out of the box?

No, but I am planning to wait until the public uproar forces Sony to adopt a friendlier return policy and/or just say it's covered under warranty.

Dead pixels DO NOT occur with time and will only be present right out of the box. So, yes, you should always expect the possibility of having dead pixels on any LCD based product. That's the nature of the technology.

Stuck pixels can occur with time, though, but this is also the case with any LCD.

People forgot that the DS had dead pixel issues at launch too.
Actually they aren't. The thing is, Nintendo actually replaced your DS if it had even ONE dead pixel. And they usually got it shipped back to you within 3-7 days of you shipping it to them.

Sony, on the other hand, doesn't give a shit.

What i mean is that am i suppose to expect dead pixels on EVERY lcd screen?

I'm not sure what you are asking...

Dead pixels are not going to be present on EVERY LCD screen...but the possibility of receiving a screen with dead pixels applies to ALL LCDs. If it uses an LCD, there is always a chance of receiving one with dead pixels.

You should not EXPECT to find them, but you should always be prepared.

To all those waiting for the "pixel defect" to be fixed in next revision -- it ain't happening, like many people before me have said. What you *should* be waiting for is Sony to start damage control and taking back systems with 2+ dead pixels...not the 12 they're requiring now.

Woot!! Good thing mine is perfect. By the way, PSP is awesome, awesome is PSP!!!

see if some pays the exact same amount of money for the psp as this guy did shouldnt they expect to get the exact same result?

I mean really sony should have dead pixels under their warranty and gamers should not stand for recieving a product that is not perfect out of the box.

I think what's riling people is Sony coming out and stating explicitly that no amount of dead pixels will be considered a defect.

Most manufacturers will replace a unit with an above-average number of dead pixels. Or at least, they keep quite about the whole issue, and handle it on a case-by-case basis.

Shouldn't the guy that shells out for a several thousand dollar LCD HDTV expect the same results as every other person?

The problem is not that the units have dead pixels, but it is the way Sony is handling the issue. Many stores seem to be pretty helpful, though...

Why should Sony expect to pay. It took filed lawsuits to get them to finally fix PS2 drives. The public equal stupid lately. I mean this sheep gets cut with a clean blade and that sheep over there gets cut with a rusty blade. (Sony no one will know or care.)

"You just cursed yourself a dead pixel will show up in 24hrs."

Good thing dead pixels don't develop over time. ooops.

...which is exactly what I've been saying in all of these threads.

Unfortunately, stuck pixels can develop and are much more annoying.

Right, but its probably just a tempest in a teapot when you have a number of nationwide retailers that have no-questions-asked return policies. Not to mention that even if Sony offered a more flexible return policy themselves, it wouldn't guarantee a better unit in terms of pixel defects.

The PSP is great and all, but I don't NEED it. Stuff I NEED are food and clothing.

None of my LCD panels have dead pixels - thats 13 if you count the DS as two. They are not common - but they do happen. But people will complain about problems on message boards - they won't post that they don't have problems (well, except on here :)
