PSP post-launch: Just as bad as the DS?

I should have worded it differently. I meant you could play Fusion and Black on PS2 which look better and most likely play alot better on the PS2's Dualshock controller. Yes, I understand they are new games in the series and are portable, but they aren't games that scream originality and make you want to put down $250 on a new system.

They are, though. I've been chomping at the bit for new entries into the Ridge Racer, Twisted Metal, and Wipeout series...and that does not represent the entire line-up by any stretch.

If I cared about power I would buy a fucking $2500 Alienware laptop that would run circles around PSP.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE GAMES!

Something tells me if they were both launching on the same day, for the same price of 250 dollars, PSP wouldn't sell a single unit. That comparison sucks.

Bristow said:
Ok, a better analysis of the PSP launch lineup would be it's the greatest launch ever for racing and sports fans. :)

It's THE greatest racing launch of all time, no question about that. :P

I can't think of many launches that cater to everyone, though. Can you?

Looking over that complete list of games posted somewhere around here there are a few games that have piqued my interest, games in bold i'd actually buy but the rest i'm looking forward to seeing how they turn out to decide.

Nintendo DS Games
-Advance Wars 3: Battle for Omega Land (Nintendo)

-Bleach (Sega)
-Fullmetal Alchemist (Bandai)
-Jump Super Stars (Nintendo)
-Naruto: Saikyo Ninja Daikesshu 3 (TOMY)
-One Piece (Bandai)

PSP Games

-Bleach: Heat the Soul (SCEI)
-Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (MediaWorks)
-Naruto (Bandai)
-One Piece (Bandai)

Pretty pathetic on both sides if you ask me 5 must buys for me for each system over a full year and one of the PSP games likely won't ever see localization (Princess Crown). 2005 imo doesn't look to be too great a year for either handheld. I don't own a DS yet but will buy one when something great gets released (likely will be FFIII or Secret of Mana) and i'll be buying a PSP on thurs because quite frankly i'm a technophile and the one PSP i've played looked amazing.

I was talking with some of my co-workers today and we all agreed that the PSP is really sexy and is the future of handhelds.

I think Madden NFL, Gran Turismo Mobile, and Grand Theft Auto obviously ... if those are out within six months of the PSP US launch, the system is going to get massive sales boosts.

Those will bring in new customers too.

Is Nintendogs coming out for the DS this summer?

The post-launch window does look semi-dire, just to be back on-topic. I'm hoping there's E3 surprises coming. OTOH, There are launch games I'm skipping that I'll be happy to go back and get later (Mercuty, NFSU, MGA). So I'm not hurting in any case.

Your argument against the PSP hit a brick wall when the flagship launch title for the DS was a port of Super Mario 64 that for many people was either unplayable or very hard to play without an analog stick. The N64 Super Mario 64 is a superior game to the DS port, and the games you're bashing on the PSP are NOT ports but rather new entries into the series that people have wanted sequels to for a while - and you can only get the sequels on the PSP.

Ditto. By the time i get tired of Wipeout Pure and Lumines, Ridge Racers, Ape Escape, and Metal Gear AC!D will have dropped a bit. By the time i get tired of those, Electroplankton and Meteos will be released (import). i hate the idea of how portable gaming is now getting expensive, but on the other hand, we're moving out of the ghetto little leagues. Har, har.

Wipeout is network-capable for the first time ever.

Sorry to nitpick here, but all of the PlayStation Wipeout games had two-system networking using the link cable--even the original Wipeout back in 1995! :)

I do believe that Wipeout Pure is the first game in the series to exceed four human players as the maximum number supported (it supports up to eight).

The difference compared to the DS launch is that the PSP has a larger selection of games available NOW, and has big name titles like Metal Gear, Dynasty Warriors, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, etc.

I currently own 10 games for the system (only one of which, Minna No Golf, isn't coming out at launch. Ridge Racer is 4/06, but that's pretty soon), and there's still four more games coming out this week I'm interested in. With the DS, I got the system and a few games, and never mind being interested in them or not, there was nothing else even released for several months. What's the number of DS games currently available right now? Is it even at 15 yet?

There's certainly going to be a drop-off in the number of releases, but there's what, at least three games for April (Ridge Racers, Fifa, NBA Street), and May brings E3 where we'll get a look at eveyrthing else that's coming. But the bottom line is that with so many (good) games out now on PSP, it isn't going to seem like as big a drought as other system launches have seen IMO. That's why the launch is getting so much praise.

*waits for people to come in and say how PSP is sexy and the future of handhelds...blah blah blah etc.

Well that's because it's true. It IS the future of handhelds. :D (Sexy being just opinion, but the design certainly looks a hell of a lot more appealing than the DS.)

My co-worker is convinced that PSP naysayers are people that have yet to actually try the system out, and I'm starting to agree with him. Hold one in your hands and play it, then tell me it isn't the best portable gaming machine out, and I'll be impressed. I have yet to meet anyone (I show mine to customers) that doubted the system and did a complete 180 after being shown the PSP.

I've even played it that way. but I was discounting it, mostly through my lazy-ass not wanting to put in a huge discalimer about why the PSP networking is, esentailly a new thing (1-- it;s portable and therefore far more likely to happen, 2-- it supports 8 players rather than 2 (or 4 in the case of wip3out).

Nyeah. :P

For post-launch, you're supposed to watch movies, read manga, and listen to The Fucking Champs.

Ridge Racer is 4/06, but that's pretty soon

I don't think that's right...

Most PSP games say 4/06 on EB's website (including games like Twisted Metal HO, which is already available). I'd say that date means something else...

Yes. It's the date of the next shipment of these games.

For only $219, less than the price of the PSP itself, you too can own a 1GB MS Duo Pro.

People need to stop looking at launches as a sign of a greatness, most of any of the launch stuff for PSP or DS is shovelware that will be long forgotten by the end of this year with few exceptions.

Both PSP and DS had/have two games I .want/wanted at launch, which I find to be pathetic. I only recently picked up a DS because Yoshi was finally out and there's a good set of puzzle titles coming very soon (Meteos, Pac Pix, Puyo Pop Fever, Polarium). Then there's Kirby, Egg Monster Hero and others. Not to mention the next GBA Fire Emblem.

Right now PSP has Lumines and MGA, there's nothing else I want. Maybe when GTA and a few other titles I want are out. But right now, I just don't see much that's terribly mindblowing now or for the next few months.

That just isn't true on PSP, though. There will be AT LEAST six titles that will likely remain favorites.

Yeah, what Amir0x said.

BTW, if you like turn-based strategy games, MG Acid is definitely a PSP killer-app. Incredibly good.

eh, that's pretty glowing praise for MGA. I haven't really heard people as excited for it so I thought maybe it'd be a good but forgettable title. Now you're making me think otherwise...

Hence, "with few exceptions." Lumines and MGA I see remaining favorites. I could tell you that Mario 64 and Feel the Magic will remain favorite launch titles as well, which the probably will. But I seriously doubt anyone will say Ridge Racer DS or Dynasty Warriors are going to stand the test of time, in addtion to any garbage EA put out.

IMO Lumines, Ridge Racers, Wipeout, Twisted Metal, Mercury and Metal Gear Ac!d are all top notch entertainment. PSP's launch line-up is the best ever. There's a great amount of new games, some more original than others, but all awesome games.

Add Wipeout to that list, and Ridge Racers. There's your four, like I said. I could see TM potentially replacing Metal Gear, too, depending on the online scene.

Asking more than $30 for Mercury is, I'm sorry, fucking insane.

I would, but I don't give two shits about racers.

Well, DS had zero games I wanted and PSP has six, so I guess my experience is a little different than yours.

I agree that rating a system soley by its launch is shortsighted-- but I have had enough of people telling me that PSP's launch is in some way mediocre.

As quirky and charming as Feel the Magic is, I highly doubt that game will truly be remembered for being great. I think it'll be remembered for being an interesting diversion that was pretty much the only thing other than Mario 64 DS that wasn't complete shite on launch. Reviews agree. My personal opinion on the game agrees as well.

A great game is a great game, Lumines is more than $30 and it's a simple puzzle game too. Doesn't mean it sould be overlloked. Mercury looks better than most of the launch line-up as it is, really unique and perfect for a handheld.

The only truly definitive favorite I see in the PSP's launch lineup is Lumines. I might say HSG, too, if it were a launch game in the US.

The PSP's US launch rules.

The DS's sucked.

Simple as that.

Well that's fine for you, but I STILL play Ridge Racer V, Twisted Metal Black, and even Wipeout Fusion on the PS2...and I'd imagine that will hold true for their PSP sequels.

And why is that? Because it isn't a game with high production values?

The game is probably the best puzzle game I've played since Tetrisphere.

It's a great game. Screw the fact that it isn't super flashy in graphics, the game is FUN (and its music rules)

The problem with the PSP is that there are too many launch titles.

I own four NDS games: Mario 64, Feel the Magic, Wario, and Yoshi and there's nothing else on the system that interests me until Metroid.

Right now on the PSP I own Darkstalkers, Need for Speed Underground Rivals, and THUG2 Remix. On launch day I'll also have Ridge Racer, Wipeout Pure, and Twisted Metal Head On.

That's six launch titles right away and there's more I want.

After launch I plan on picking up Metal Gear AC!D, Lumines, Tiger Woods, MVP Baseball, and NFL Street.

That doesn't count the UMD movies I'm planning on getting or bigger memory sticks.

"It's a great game. Screw the fact that it isn't super flashy in graphics, the game is FUN (and its music rules)"

I think its bland and overrated personally, plus you can play a java version of the game online for free :P.
