PSP price drop speculation THREAD

Let's discuss the inevitable. Sony will most assuredly drop the price of the PSP in 2006. With commitment to manufacturing partners like Samsung that they will ship 20 million units of PSP hardware in 2006,

http://gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=14009

and with Nintendo DS having a lead in sales, how long before Sony turns the PSP into the mass market marvel that it intended it to be?

Play along: Tell us the month you think it will happen in and the new pricing and what you get for it:

May 2006

PSP Core unit (console and headphones only): $179
PSP Value Bundle w/ 1gb Mem stick: $249

Your thoughts?

I don't think we'll see any PSP pack at below $ 199 / € 199 in 2006 in the west.

I think they'll drop the PSP price in Japan first, probably around February / March. There are a lot of games coming in those months and they will want to keep the third parties happy there. A price drop will surely help new software sales there. I think they may drop the Value Pack to the Japanese Core Pack price level.

Sony will probably drop PSP price in Europe / NA around April / May if sales in January - March are at least decent. If sales are good, they may even wait longer, especially in Europe where the thing just came out last September. Price for Value Pack: $ 199 / € 199. Perhaps a new pack for $ 249 / € 249 (2 GB even if price drops fast, or perhaps slightly more expensive for a new 2 GB pack: 269 or so)

May 2006 at E3:

$199 PSP "Core" (incl. PSP, headphones, and 32 MB Memory Stick)
$249 PSP "Maximum Value" (incl. PSP, headphones, 1 GB Memory Stick, other useless crap)

I think it's time they cut the price in Japan.PSP has been out there for over a year at the launch price. They could make an announcement at the Playstation Meeting in February.
In US I expect a 199$ PSP and maybe a 99$ PS2 around E3.
In Europe the same price cuts (PSP at 199€ and PS2 at 99€) could happen in September,a traditional month for price cuts for SCEE.

I'm hoping this is soon since it's been out in Japan for almost two months already.

I believe Sony has to get the PSP below $199 to really start selling well.

Even then I still think most consumers have a magical $150 mental price limit on a handheld. Unless Sony starts shipping these suckers with 2gb mem sticks it's just not a great buy for a lot of people.

I own one but i'm hardly feeling like it was a great idea.

If it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen soon. Wait too long and it will take momentum away from the PS3 prerelease hype train.

No way its first price drop would be to $179. $229 or $199 are much more likely.

2 years, 30M units? They must be expecting big things.

A price drop will be great, but what they really need is a couple of killer games to go along with GTA. There are plenty of good games and a few really good ones, but none that are system sellers.

And I still don't see a game announced that will do that.

BTW,

If Sony gets another 20M units out next year, they'll have passed Xbox and GC to get there. Not quite so bad for a first attempt in the handheld market.

20 million shipped? LOL.

They can ship 50 million, it won't matter if people don't buy them.

No they can't because companies only ship what retailers order.

Regarding PSP price drop, I would say the value pack is dropping to $199 in the next couple months with the introduction of a greatest hits line.

Sony's got a lot of shit on their plate to manage but their position is admirable cause despite what people say about the company, they are safe no matter what they do. They have to announce the PS3 price, they have to drop the PSP price as it's about that time, and they have to drop the PS2 to $99.

With the PS3 price they're not gonna be stupid and they're gonna sell out regardless of what they charge. Like the PSP they do cram a lot of value into their game boxes and that's why with the PSP they don't need to rush to drop but it's about that time and many of you hit it on the head. It's gonna be $199 for Core and $249 for Pack probably and that's a good price. It's not as if sales aren't healthy and strong drops and good support on all levels won't keep them healthy. I mean look at Europe, crazy, and the content situation improves everyday. The PSP's situation is only gonna get better as the price comes down and it's gonna blow by the DS and be a more viable product for longer. Then the PS2 is gonna keep on trucking but that drop is coming soon for that one last push.

Their game business healthy, I'm excited to see if they pull it off as they've been plotting and scheming for a while. I love how they appear as if they have no chinks in their armor, they wear the crown well that hasn't changed. They getting ready to drop bombs though, and they're gonna do it in style. Should be fun but the anticipation is killing me.

imo, when and if the price drops it'll be massive, and i mean like $149 range. it will be epic. you will say "wow!!" lol

until it stops selling, i don't see them dropping the price. If people just ignore the comparisons to the DS, then you can see that there is more than enough momentum there to just keep the price as it is. Unless it was selling like a dog, then they would just be throwing cash away.

I've said it before, but i believe sony have moved to a new structure where the price of H/W will stay static for longer. Value will be added to the pack , but the core prices will stay the same.

Again (broken record) i believe this is what Kutaragi means when he said the PS3 will be expensive... it will remain at 39800 for around 2-2.5 years before a drop.

Will be 2007 when we finally see that price, late 2007 i'd guess.

Biggest chance i see for a wow in 2006 will be if they drop the Giga Pack to $199. Would replace my PSP in a heartbeat at that price.

Yeah, suddenly I'm liking an E3 announcement of a $99 PS2, $199 PSP and $399 PS3

Or Playstation Value Bundle: All three fucking consoles for $700 fucking dollars. In one box. BOOOYAH. LOLZ

That would be pretty crazy, although the PS2 being in there would be redundant as PS3 is BC with PS2/PS1(hopefully).

E3 for sure.

Sony style though.

Giga pack for $279 and then Value pack (upgraded to 64MB) for $229

PS2 has to come down in price as well. $99? Maybe. But those sneaky bastards might do $129.
