I've been thinking about getting one. Hope this happens.

GETTING ZAPPED - by Dorothy Pomerantz, 10.31.05 - Forbes Magazine

Videogame makers suffer every time there's a shift in platforms. Customers are holding off buying new games for the upcoming Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, likely to debut around the holidays. So game giant ELECTRONIC ARTS (56, ERTS) is having a dreadful time. The fiscal year ended in March was subpar, and in the first quarter EA suffered a loss--something it hadn't had since fiscal year 2001, amid the changeover from PlayStation 1 to 2. The stock has slumped 19% since March, prompting at least eight shareholder lawsuits.

To Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, these circumstances present a buying opportunity. Pachter points out that this Christmas EA will have little competition for its popular Madden NFLgame. Last year Madden was up against Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Microsoft's Halo 2.

Also helping: Pachter expects Sony to drop the price of its PSP portable game system from $250 to $99. More people would then be on the prowl for PSP games, which currently account for 9% of EA's revenues.

I think he means $199.

I think PSP should drop to $199 ASAP but it looks like Sony is going to try to ride out Xmas at $249 and $299 pricepoints.

Of course a drop to $199 coupled with a $19 greatest hits line in the spring would be a great way to boost sales when things slow down.

I am going to go out on a limb here and assume it should read $199, as that would a reasonable price drop for any console system. Sony would NEVER drop a system by nearly 2/3s of price less than a year after release, or hell even more than a year, no company would!

Agreed, and I'm absolutely astonished:

a) it hasn't happened yet and
b) They went the reverse and actually made a MORE expensive model.

$199 isn't even truly a price drop, it's just the core system. It sells for less than that in Japan.

Probably a typo, they meant 199. Or they're fucking insane. Insanely AWESOME.

of course that isn't going to stop game store employees from spewing that out as fact come tomorrow morning.

"Oh, I forgot to, er, carry the one..."

would be suicidal if they do that. Imagine how much money they would lose.

Not that I am complaining. $99 is incredibly attractive.

i say they should keep adding accessories to the bundle and jack up the price accordingly. It's the only way we'll learn.

:lol Wise words...

And it's obviously a typo, simple common sense should tell you that (though evidence suggests that's clearly lacking on this board).

I don't think we will see a PSP price drop for a long time, and the Giga Pack just reinforces that notion I believe.

It's just how Sony operates, they don't like price drops.

It's not that they don't like price drops, it's that they don't do price drops unless there is an actual noticeable drop in sales of the product they are selling at its current price. If you look at their history in this industry price drops have almost always come after a dip sales.

My opinion that's a typo, no way it's going down to $99 anytime soon.

It must be a typo. Sony don't often make price drops, so a price drop that big seems to be a out of the window. Its most likely a typo, it should have been $199.

Curious IF Sony were to drop the PSP to 99$ how big of a lose would they take on each unit? I know they're already losing some cash as it is now but can't remember how much for each unit.

Let's just say Sony would need a tie ratio well over 10 games to even break even...
