Both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses. IMO, the DS won't be able to last long unless there's a lot of unique software for it. Its the games that matter... Nintendo knows this very well. Now they have to prove it.

I'd say this is really all you need to know ...

Japanese support:

DS = PSP

Western support

PSP >>> DS
I dunno about that, EA, Atari and Activision all seem to favor PSP slightly, T2 favors DS slightly while THQ and UbiSoft favor DS by a wide margin. It seems rather even overall though.

In Japan, everyone favors DS slightly except Square Enix (favors DS widely), Capcom (equal consideration) and Sega (favors PSP slightly). DS has a slight lead here I'd say.

Doubtless E3 will shake a lot of this up. :)

I would not bank on Square-Enix remaining cool on the PSP for too much longer, especailly if it continues to outpace the DS in Japan on a weekly basis.

The other thing is publisher lists are fine, but I would reckon that most Winning Eleven fans for instance would rather play Winning Eleven on PSP than DS (or say Madden NFL).

Mama Smurf said:
God, Capcom need to do better than that. Both systems are perfect for a Street Fighter for example.
I wouldn't be surprised if PSP gets SF3 Chronicle and RE Outbreak while DS gets MM Zero 5 soon. :)

Oh man, I just noticed there's a Worms up there. God, please don't let them make some crappy 3D version. The DS is so perfect for a 2D Worms.

Square Enix's DS lineup is impressive. I'm interested in every single one of those games, to some degree. That doesn't happen very often.

IIRC They changed the Beetles into Ford or Holdens here in Austalia as another version. That is why I am asking.

If it is indeed a BAR type game, it cements the deal for me. Multiplayer BAR racing = OMGWTFBBQ!

Firest0rm said:
That has nothing to do with favoring, that has to do with the system being capable of running GTA.

The PSP is getting 2 of their most succesful series, and one of those is their flagship. That's why I say they're favoring it.

I thought the Naruto game was for DS??

edit: I got it confused with the DS SMBM-like fighting game.

Still, I dont remember any PSP Naruto game. I also dont see the DS Naruto game, we saw a few screenshots of it last week

Any info on Prince of Tennis: 2005 Crystal Drive? I started watching the anime and I'm loving it :)
Oh, and you mention some games (at least Lumines) more than once - once for the jpn publisher and once for the europe\north american publisher. Gave me the wrong idea of both line ups :p

SolidSnakex said:
GTA's on the PSP. I'd say that shows which one they favor more. :)
Well, I'm talking in terms of SKU number. 2K Games seems to be going all out for DS while Rockstar is focused on PSP. Still, I'd expect some games from both labels to show up the other platform too.

Also, people lamenting the omission of Naruto DS need to realize it's being published by Tomy, not Bandai.

enjoy it while it lasts, Nintendo only received alot of 3rd party support initially cause of their legacy with the GB, however support in Japan is likely to also shift over to the PSP cause that's where 3rd parties have been getting their sales

Interestingly the one 3rd party who supports PSP over DS (Sega) has seen dramatically better sales on DS so far. Really, it comes down to brand though, and in that regard 3rd party games are doing essentially the same on DS & PSP.

I agree, the third party games are bombing. :/

yeah cause Sega released FTM with the DS launch as oppose to having no PSP launch titles, and the only Sega PSP game is an inferior version of Puyo Pop, funny way of showing that they favor the PSP :lol

except when it comes to sales

So far we've seen mostly PSone/PS2-oriented titles sell on the PSP. Once we see the GBA-esque titles on DS, like Naruto and Rockman EXE, then we'll begin to see similar results.

Or to put it frankly, PSP = older, DS = younger.

Some numbers based on jarrod's lists:

PSP:

28 games from Western devs (36 % of 3rd party titles)
50 games from Eastern devs (64 % of 3rd party titles)

= 78 third party games

+ 33 first party games (30 % of total games)

= 110 games in total

DS:

33 games from Western devs (34 % of 3rd party titles)
63 games from Eastern devs (66 % of 3rd party titles)

= 96 third party games

+ 26 first party games (21 % of total games)

= 122 games in total

96 PSP Shin Sangoku Musou Koei 2004/12/16 5544 137,750

I doubt we'll be able to tell much about DS third party sales until we actually get some good, popular third party titles.

Monk said:

Well looking at the numbers that we have posted thanks to CVXFREAK, then not all third party games have bombed. Especially considering none of the games released from 3rd parties are really profile games such as Ridge Racer.

Princess Crown iz listed for PSP under Konami :)

I wonder if Vic has any interest in publishing PSP games?

You should hear he go on about the PSP, he certainly seems to worship at the alter of the Playstation Portable.

Clearly this isnt the Gamecube vs PS2 battle that some people are trying to turn it into to.

people were saying the DS was dead before the psp was even released. it then broke sales records in europe. its just fanboys, you learn to ignore them.

DS will definitely sell more than the circa 20-25 million the GameCube is on pace for.

DS is already at 6 million worldwide, which I think is a record for fastest selling hardware in video game history (6 mill in the first 4-5 months).

Even if the PSP takes a lead, I think the DS will still end up selling 40 mill.

As for Game Boy Next -- I really, really think Nintendo should get on the phone with Apple and discuss a partnership in the portable relam.

A Nintendo-Apple partnership would be wonderful for both, I think.

Haha, I agree, those two companies were made for each other. Steve Jobs would get along great with Reggie! :lol

Well the DS I can see being Nintendo's "game centric/experimental" type of platform, and I think it will do a good job of that.

Hopefully in the future they canp redesign the system, because right now, I feel its too bulky.

As for Game Boy Next ... its gotta have media functionality ala PSP, but Nintendo needs some help here, because this isn't their forte and people won't take it seriously. If they get Apple to help them, then yeah it would be friggin' huge.

And if Apple designed it, well, conclusions are obvious. I'd imagine it having a similar form-factor to the SP, only with a strong fuse of the Apple design ethic.

Well I dunno if it could be quite as small as the GBA SP, because it would have to have a screen comparable to the PSP and at least 4 face buttons/d-pad/and hopefully a retractable analog stick.

But it could be smaller than the current PSP, especailly if Nintendo uses a card type format ala DS instead of UMD discs and a fold out design.

I think a partnership could be similar to the one Nintendo had with Panasonic/Matsushita ...
Nintendo manufactures the basic Game Boy Next (i-Tunes support but only through Memory Stick), and then Apple makes a Game Boy Next with a HDD full blown MP3/video functionality built in.

That would be great.
