From following the news in Korea regarding psy and this song korea is all excited how psy has broken into the mainstream american market when their major music companies like sm entertainment, yg, etc, keep failing with their groups that they send to america to make it big.
I think the song is ok not exactly repeatable to me but it will be more interesting to see what he follows up with to see if he can really break into the american market with an album.

^ Yea, at the very least it cracks me up that the big labels in Korea have pushed barbie dolls and pretty boys towards the American market so hard for years without any success and Psy comes along and is not even trying and blows the fuck up. Plus it's a song mocking douchey tryhards. +1

Oh, don't worry, the media will be sure to repeat it to you ad nauseam from here on out :P

Er, JYP definitely. YG to a lesser extent. You'd find most companies much more immediately and lucratively interested in the Japanese market, though. If you actually looked.

It's understandable to instinctively start from the idea that cultural and economic activity compulsively radiates from and gravitates towards the US, and to expect that this is a model of assumption you can use as offhandedly as you like, but it's daft. The notion that "pretty boy" groups like Super Junior and SHINee and Infinite and TVXQ, or "barbie girl" groups like Soshi, Kara, Miss A are largely, let alone emphatically, targeted at the US is ludicrous.

Catchy beats? Check
Easy dance that anyone can do? Check
Funny? Check
Inoffensive to the majority of viewers? Check

It just has what it takes to go viral and I'm glad for all it's success!

I know little about Korean music, but I've checked out this guy's previous albums after hearing this Gangnam Style. He's not going anywhere to be honest in the US. He's talented, but I think this is just a one hit and done deal. I doubt he makes anything of it. The song itself is catchy, but it's really the video that makes it. It's just bloody great. You can watch it again and again. I will thank him for one other thing though; I have discovered, or should I say stumbled upon, a group called LeeSsang. Now, they are pretty awesome too.

Heyyyyyy, sexy ladyyy

That line seems out of place. Like it has no relevance to the rest of the lyrics.

Anyways the video is good and the song is pretty catchy. The way he does the "Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Opa" reminds me of the water levels in Mario or something.

It is everywhere. When I started uni this year they marched (or rather, hopped) the tutors in to Gangnam Style and the tutors keep doing parts of the dance randomly.

i think this is what chitownbuffalo looks like

also, the video is very pretty, you can definitely tell it was made using high quality cameras. Like that video of this guy with his fat ass girlfriend sitting on him.

What the fuck

That girl is crazy hot

and then I clicked the parody videos and got pissed at the posters who linked them, since they were shitty. But then I watched more and it appeared those had insanely hot girls as well.

hot girls everywhere

Excelent video, OK song. I think Dragostea Numa Numa song is still the best funny non-english dance song. Boten Anna being close second.

Love both the song and the video. Deliberately trying wayyyyy too hard to act like a big shot = something that amuses everyone.

Agreed, Leesang is awesome.

Lol you must not know about many random english lyrics in japanese and korean songs. Many times it makes no sense but is added because it sounds catchy.

I was surprised it was played on mainstream radio here in socal.

It got play here in Honolulu too, first time I've heard Asian music on the radio but I figured if any place in the US was likely to play it, this would be it. Interesting to hear the mainland accepted it to this level too. Any other similar anecdotes?

exactly. no-one's going to give a shit about SNSD singing songs that sound like US pop in english! gangnam style is pretty unique while still being the sort of thing that anyone in the world could dig. that's the way to do it.

I only just learned about this song like 2 days ago because a mate sent it me.

It's been on repeat ever since, too fucking funny and catchy.

The video is pretty funny, but the song pretty much sums up everyting i hate about Electronic music these days
/old man rant.

that it's catchy and fun?

It's music created for fun first, art (if at all) second.

Dude, it's Gungam Style, not Beethoven, what the fuck?

The reason they keep failing to break into the US market is that they don't keep their ridiculous MV style in the transition, they tone down their groups too much. They need to have wacky videos like Psy to get any attention.

Also because it's JYP who has pushed hardest, and even he can't make the Wonder Girls fly.

The idea that a longing or need for the US market exercises a governing influence over the conceptualisation of a majority of Kpop groups, tracks, videos etc. is bogus, though.

Compared to something like Girls Generation's "The Boys" PSY doesn't take himself seriously which is funny and relatable to American audiences who have no idea what he's saying. I guess GG did do an English version but there's not much of a market for boy/girl bands anymore.
