I'm just starting act IV, but thus far this is easily a step backwards narratively from Max Payne and Alan Wake. I don't know what Remedy is riffing off of this time. Generic Sy-Fy original series'? In the past they've worn their inspirations on their sleeve, but this time I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm stunned by how weak the characters are. Jack Joyce is no Max or Alan or even Mona for that matter. It feels like more of a waste considering you brought in a notable Hollywood actor to bring the character to life. Serene is the most interesting and benefits from the added exposure of being heavily featured in the TV show.
The television stuff is actually super fascinating. I would love for someone at Remedy to explain why they did this. On the one hand it acts as a palette cleanser, of sorts. I play 45-1hr full of combat and minor platforming sequences and then I can relax and watch something, and from that perspective it's kind of interesting, but these side stories are underwhelming and their connection to the narrative you play through feels tangential at best. The TV show feels like a tacit condemnation of video games' ability to handle narrative. "Here's this other story stuff we couldn't figure out how to make work in the medium we're in!"
Many of these characters either barely appear in the game or only do so in emails. When I see their notes in game I don't feel anything beyond "Yeah that's the dope I've been watching in the TV shows." The junction decisions are super binary and from what I've experienced in my play through and seeing others', the changes to the live action stuff aren't substantial, but that isn't a surprise. No one has the time or the money to shoot a TV show 10 different ways.
I enjoy the gameplay a lot. I know Gertsmann complained about not being able to string powers together elegantly, but I don't have that issue. I wish there were more enemy and weapon variety, but outside of that I've been able to make my own fun out of the encounters. It's been a weird experience playing through it. I marvel at it one second and shake my head the next. It's ambitious that's for sure.
