Question about Neon Genesis Evangelion DVDs

I was wondering if the Platinum editions of volumes 06 and 07 which contain episodes 21-23 and 24-26 respectively, contain exactly the same video as in the two Director's Cuts Resurrection and Genesis Reborn (which have eps 21-26 also).

I was thinking of picking up the entire Platinum collection, but I wont get volumes 06 and 07 if they aren't the same edits as the Director's Cuts, in which case I'd get Resurrection and Reborn DVDs in place of volumes 06 and 07. Can anyone confirm what's what?

I'm pretty sure Platinum has the director's cut stuff. I saw the show first on Platinum and my friend would always point out the stuff from D&R.

Just wait about a month, the Platinum set is getting a slimpack boxset release for $89. So knowing how people find deals online and post them here, you could get it for ~$50.

It has 21' through 24' in addition to the regular 21-24 eps, but 25' and 26' are technically End of Evangelion.

I still don't plan on buying Evangelion yet. Since they had released that remastered version or whatever in Japan which you would figure would be the content of the platinum version but last I checked it wasn't. :(

Like all things Eva, wait about five minutes and another 'remastered' uber-edition will be released.

I thought the Platinum series was the remastered version minus End of Evangelion which ADV doesn't own the rights to.

Really? I remember hearing a long while back that there was that new R2 release and that it wasn't what was in the platinum release or something. It was a long time ago but I remember hearing that from somewhere.

Maybe certain extras, but as for actual show content I've watched both R1 and R2 versions of the remaster and I haven't been able to tell anything significant.

so uh... now i'm confused.

To make it simple I'll just ask the question outright.

Should i get the entire Platinum set to have the complete NGE experience?

Slimpacks don't have the extras. If you want those you have to go with the big ones.

End of Eva is a different 25 and 26 than the one in the show. Neither one is "right" or "wrong" but they are different pictures of what amounts to the same ending.

What you said makes it sound like Eva's TV run did not include a 25 and 26 which it did and which are included on these DVD's.

Yes, and End of Eva. You don't need Death + Rebirth. But you may want it.

I already have them both. I'm hoping that by watching the series again End of Eva will actually make sense -_-

I have the bog standard version that was first released on DVD.. VHS quality and all. But I've come to accept it as it is. Not a big fan of the movies either - although they are tied to the series as an alternate scenario in the life of Shinji.

The only renewal part that has not been released here are the movies which are not done by ADV, but by Manga (who really suck btw) The last release in Japan was a DTS edition of the Movie renewals.

Gainax remastered the video and reencoded the song for 5.1 audio when they released the Evangelion Renewal in Japan.

ADV released most of that package as Evangelion Platinum for the US release. The Jp ver has 1-26, 21'-24', and EoE from what I recall. The US ver has 1-26 and 21'-24'. If you want 25'-26' on region 1, you have to get the Director's Cut DVD that contains 24'-26'. But this was based off of the old Eva transfers so naturally doesn't look as good as the Platinum release. Nevertheless, the content of 25'-26' is more or less the content in End of Evangelion, which you can get from Manga Entertainment on R1. The difference between 25'-26' and EoE is like a difference in title screens.

Interesting.

Why did ADV not include 25' and 26' in the Platinum editions?

Renewal of Evangelion only has 21'-24' in their set as well. The difference is that Renewal has Death & Rebirth and End of Evangelion. But since Manga Entertainment has the rights to those two movies here in the US, ADV could only release what they did.

Manga recently released a movie boxset. Does anyone know if they were the remastered versions?

the back of the box says...

"letterboxed - surround sound - english and japanese languages - english subtitles - audio commentary - photo gallery - character synopsis - production credits - previews - weblinks - and more!"

sticker on the front says...

"hideaki anno's masterful two-part finale to NGE - contains collector's NGE mouse pad and postcard"

Also, the serial numbers on the indiviual cases are the same as the old single releases, so...

Yeah, manga's movie boxset was several years overdue, but they're the original versions, not the remastered ones.

A friend of mine complained that after watching the Platinum version of Eva, the quality of the movies just didn't cut it anymore. Personally, I don't think they're bad video quality at all, plus EoE has a DTS soundtrack. They might have been nicer with the remaster, but it's not like they're poor.

You seem to be unfamiliar with Eva's episode notation. The 25th ep in the TV run is - 25 -, while the first part of EoE is officially - 25' -, same with 26 and 26'. All the extended versions of 21-24 are named - 21' 22' 23' 24' -.
