Question to otakus. Where did this weird posture trend come from?

It's one of those postures/gestures that they do to appear all kawaii and shit.

Another one is this way of running:

I think it's from a habit of wearing skirts, keeping that thigh gap low to look more feminine and pervs away.

Hm, this was something I never paid attention to as a trend in Japanese culture, be it as it pertains to fiction or real life. The theories behind why it's so prevalent make it an interesting subject, either way.

I kind of do this.. but it's not on purpose. My hips don't go out like that on the side, but my toes/feet are kind of inwards when I stand normally. It causes my shoes to become uneven on the sides because I lean more on my heel. I didn't realize until I had to stop using a pair of shoes because they were tilting after using them so much.

But girls who do it on purpose do it for youthfulness, like SonicMegaDrive wrote. It shows a sense of innocence too (kind of like why Japanese men love pink nipples, but that's another story).

Story time is now!

Pointing your toes in causes the silhouette of the knees and thighs appear slimmer because you're in effect aiming a narrower plane or surface at the eye and causing the flat (wide) plane of the inner thigh to recede. It's also got that "demure" thing going for it because it's a closed/inward-facing posture, where an open pose suggests power, action.

No one will ever love you in if your nipples aren’t pink.

But seriously, pink nipples is a sign for “purity and youth” in Japan. It has gotten so bad that Japanese girls are becoming super insecure if they don’t have pink nipples. Basically, the less sexual experience a woman has, the more a guy will like them. Apparently having pink nipples means you're forever a pure virgin.

If a girl has pink nipples, she’s kirei (clean & pure). They might say otherwise, but if you ask them anonymously, they’ll confess their love and preference for pink nipples.

Some girls go really far for better self esteem. They get surgery to turn their nipples pink, buy expensive cream/products that “magically” turn their nipples pink. Even some of them are referred to as something like “natural nipple colour cream”.

This is also why brown skinned anime girls are drawn to have pink nipples. It’s not a recent trend either, it’s been around forever.

Men in anime do the "airplane run" instead:

I think it comes from the Japanese ideal of a submissive woman.
Women walking or sitting (seiza, or what we call kneeling) while wearing a kimono are required to have their toes pointed inwards.

This was basically what I was going to say, but in harsher terms, and believe it's an ideal that goes well beyond the Japan's borders.

Um...what.....I have nothing to say about this but this is weird. I guess this is the same as in Korea where younger girls are getting plastic surgery to make them look western look.

I don't know about Japan, but I have Korean-American friends who are obsessed with pink nipples. Didn't realize it might be a cultural thing. Huh.

I don't know about pink nipples but in the West there's a trend of anal bleaching (look it up on Wikipedia). A much less widescread trend though.

You know what? I'm not surprised this is a thing. I wouldn't be surprised either if this was a thing in the US as well.

I thought this was about girls putting their hands in front of their faces in poses.

Which I thought was a massive stereotype or maybe my Googlefu is off, but for some reason I can't find a pic of it.

It's the way babies stand when illustrated and boosts the creep/kawaii factor. Just imagine her sucking on her thumb and you have the whole picture.

A lot of fashion habits and beauty products are cross-country in Japan and Korea since they're both considered fashionable countries with innovative beauty products.

The biggest difference is that in Japan you get in debt for university, while in Japan you get in debt for plastic surgery, and end up looking like all your friends.

You know what? I'm not surprised this is a thing. I wouldn't be surprised either if this was a thing in the US as well.

It probably is, just not as forced as in Asia (Korea/Japan). I think that people are less delusional of beauty in the US and have an easier time accept each other as they are. The pressure for beauty here is extremely harsh, especially in Korea.

I am equally confused on why animes like to show such a condition, maybe raise awareness? :P

Pigeon toe seems to mostly happen in children under 2 years of age, but it can happen in adults?

Or it could be just a fashion thing, huh.
I have it, although its not neatly dramatic as that, at most people just notice me walking funny sometimes. But yeah, yay for a fucked up spine

I'm now straight-up sad.

Girls.
Let me level with you.
All them nips?
Excellent stuff.
I mean, they're not as good as your bums, but they'll do.
They'll do.

Keeo in mind that I just made up this sentence for the dramatic effect:

"No one will ever love you in if your nipples aren’t pink."

It's not like men will decline you when you take your bra off if they like you already! But there are many men who would actually choose pink nipples on a girl instead of brown. Many don't care. But I think no one cares more than the girls themselves because it gives them a bad selfconfidence.

Of course.
But it just needed to be adressed.
Because, while inferior to bums, nips are excellent things.

It's a bullshit "cute" pose. Nobody stands that way naturally unless they have malformed legs, scurvy, rickets, or some other bone disease. I really have come to hate this pose. It afflicts female character design almost as much as the butt+chest broken spine pose does.

My friend in high school ran like this. He was an otaku then.

I knew a guy like this too. It was in highschool too, so he probably abandoned the habit, i hope. I think if someone had filmed it and shown it to him he would have realized how ridiculous it looks IRL.

also, that pink nipples thing is weird. nipples are nipples.

It's a stereotypical way of running for ninja, and specifically ninja.

As for where is comes from, it probably has similar origins to a lot of ninja stuff: literally centuries of pop culture. The Naruto series in particular revels in a lot of long-standing and extremely common tropes that date back to the Edo period. The modern idea of the ninja as it appears in pop culture has its roots in Kabuki plays, Bunraku (puppet theatre), and serialized novels.

For example, the Naruto characters Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru all come from a classic folk-tale that was first recorded in 1806. All of the key elements of the characters: ninjas with toad, slug, and snake magic respectively, date back that far.

The concept of the ninja is just something that has accumulated a ton of peculiar details after more than two centuries of pop-culture canon being built upon idea by idea.

Looks cute to me and it isn't just Japanese girls, go look at photos of western actresses and models. Also just because a girl strikes a cute pigeon-toed pose doesn't mean she's actually pigeon-toed.

It's archetypal diminutive posture. It has no Japanese origin, it's just that it hasn't fallen out of fashion in their art yet.

I noticed young women doing that in Japan, sometimes in pretty high heels, and exceedingly often when sitting on the train. Asked an elderly boutique owner I used to talk to whether that was something borrowed from older times, walking in a kimono and the likes, and as far as she knew it was just some fairly recent fad and walking like that wasn't anything traditional.

Completely forced and whack irl. But thankfully most actual fashiony people here have stopped and it's been relegated to girls overseas and overweight gothic lolita fans who still think it's cute.

It also makes its way into mangas not involving ninjas. The characters in the Saint Seiya anime run like this (at least in the Hades Chapter; I don't remember the earlier chapters much).

Looks painful and unnatural and not cute at all.

I feel sorry for the bones and ligaments and tendons that have to endure this sort of shameful contortion.
