When I was around 10, my uncle bought me his Bluebird CD "Blues in the Night" and I was surprised that I was already familiar with a handful of songs on the disc; this CD also has great renditions of "Summertime" and "St James Infirmary". From that point to today, he was the premier big-band clarinet player as far as I was concerned. For most people, the list of good clarinet players begins and ends with Benny Goodman (which is pretty much to be expected as time wears on), but I've always held a higher regard for Mr Shaw.

Also as I've noticed in the handful of interviews he has given, he was also quite a smartass. :) You will be missed.

If anyone else has even heard of this guy, I'd like to hear about it.

Thanks.

What the hell. I wasn't even aware he was still alive, and as a clarinet player and jazz fan I REALLY should have known. Anyway, an amazing talent. I guess he's known as a big band guy but I love the Gramercy 5 stuff most of all...
