R-Type Final strategies/talk...(minor spoilers)

Indeed, R-Type Final.

I purchased this game even before I owned a PS2, and since my system purchase last month I've been playing this game a great deal.

First off, I was curious if anyone can explain why the levels change as you progress - is this tied to your performance or does it have something to do with the ship you choose...or perhaps something else? I was pleasantly surprised when Level 2 changed from a watery swamp to a desert armageddon. If this is based on ship choice, will going back to previous ships used cause the levels to revert? Level 2 is a harsh mistress when it turns all desert-like. Mental note - I don't know if I particularly like this level-altering business. I like a consistently laid out battle area. :P

Are there any specific ships that people have found are more powerful/agile/better to use than others? I unlocked the Eclipse ship recently, with the tentacle-like Force, and have been having a lot of fun applying its little quirks to the level layouts.

I would reallly like some sort of guide for the game. I wonder if one was published in Japan? Even without being able to read Japanese, it would be nice to have the levels laid out.

As a long-time R-Typer, I've really been enjoying the game. Shame it's the last.

Oh, and the 'dose' meter - this accumulates when you 'suck up' bullets? I like this new addition. Adds some needed alternatives for scoring strategies.

If you think Dose is new that means you haven't played R-Type Delta, and if you haven't played R-Type Delta that means you're missing out on a near-religious experience that blows away Final in almost every respect.

*deep breath*

So go get Delta.

The rest of your questions should be explained on GameFAQs.com.

Heh, actually, I do own Delta - I've had it for years, but have played very little of it. I guess I've been put off by the changes to the Forces the game put forth. I wound up with a weird tentacley-thing one time and was aghast trying to figure out what happened to the old Forces! I've heard high praise for the game, though, and I'll definitely stow my apathy towards it and try it again soon.

As for Gamefaqs - I did check there for some info, but came away annoyed at one of the faqs where it seemed the writer was more keen on exposing naming differences between the Japanese and US versions than listing any actual strategy. I don't care that the missles were changed from "HAPPY DOWN MISSLE" to "HAPPY HOMING DOWN MISSLE".

:P

Thanks for sharing, though.

edit: aren't you the same BenT from TNL? I think I sold you some old games of mine at one point last year. Astal...or maybe Super Magnetic Neo. Hey, by the way.

The variations of Stage 2 occur after a result of what you do with 2's end boss; if you toggle one of the red or blue switches before killing it, the stage's "temperature" will increase or decrease accordingly. There's the normal form of Stage 2 and 2 variations lower and 2 higher.

Stage 4 and 6(?) also has variations and there is a stage 3.5 to be found in using a specific ship.

I guess ships I like would be strong ones like the Ragnarok 2 or Sunday Strike... the POW Armor has a nifty force when it's not attatched to the ship.

Huh? Just play as the R-9 if you want the old Force back. Simple. ^_^ Speaking as an R-Type fan, Delta is heaven on a CD-ROM. It vies with the 1987 original for being the best of the series, and probably wins.

Heh, that's too bad. I find the FAQs to be an indispensible resource, at least once the crap is sifted through. The user reviews, on the other hand ...

Ah, I was wondering why your nick seemed familiar. Yes, I probably did buy stuff from you. Already had Astal so Neo sounds right. Haven't hooked up DC since then, though. :o

Hm...a switch at the level 2 end boss changes the temperature of future level 2 excursions? I have to find this switch. Is it on the end boss itself? It can't be the glowing nodules you shoot at to destroy it...

The switches on the bosses body that are blue and red. hit one of them and it will turn gray. Finish off the boss to change the level the next time you play it through,

Delta is a MUST-PLAY for any R-Type fan. Final's a decent shooter, but a pretty poor R-Type -- the levels, Stages 4 and 6 aside, are pretty weak and simplistic. R-Type Delta is pure R-Type, with Stage 3's AT-AT battle and Stage 5's dimension level being new classics.

I still haven't given my copy of Delta a spin, but I picked up Gradius V in the meantime, and have to say, it handily destroys R-Type Final in pretty much every way. I'm going to have trouble going back to play Final at this point. It feels so slow now compared to Gradius 5.

The same thing happened to me. R-Type Final has too many dead spots for my taste. Gradius V is just mayhem from beginning to end.

This man speaks the truth. Instead of Final, I would have much rather enjoyed a graphical update to Delta, though truth be told, it still holds up fairly well. Plus the music kicks all the other R-Types to the curb.

Wow... I'm putting the Gradius V CD in my PS2 for the first time as I type. Good to hear.

Dammit! Why won't this game recognize the damn near empty memory card in slot 2!? I hate that! Konami should know better.

EDIT: Wow... This is fast(er). Pretty explosions.

Yeah, I never finished Final when I started V. Bad choice; now I don't even want to bother.

Final feels more like a collection of goofy design experiments than a finished game. I like fooling around with it, though, it's got a lot of personality.

Wish I could have got some of those dog-tag premiums they gave away in Japan. They sure were neat.

DFS.
