R-Type Final...what's the verdict?

Gradius V is my favorite game on the PS2. I briefly was able to play R-Type final a while back, but it wasn't really enough to make a fair judgment. I love shooters, so I'm always looking for another to spend some time with.

Right now it's on clearance at Fred Meyer for $10. So, is it worth the price?

it's good. i though delta was the r-type to own, but final went well. its decent, but the amount of customization and gameplay will give good replay value. B+

For $10 you can't beat it.

Honestly, if you like the past R Type games, it's definitely worth owning. $10 is a steal.

Great game... definitely worthy of the heritage. It's no Delta, but the amount of replayability, bonus stages and cool secrets make it a wonderful addition to the series.

I dont like it very much. Definitely very weak IMO. A nice bonus is the amount of ships you can unlock in the game.. And damn the game is very slow in some places... atleast on my PS2 it turns into a slideshow sometimes.... Ohh yah graphics and music especially are subpar.

It's pretty interesting to experiment with the sheer variety of ships, and unlocking them can be a more satisfying enterprise than playing the game itself eventually. It's far from the best in the series, but it's serviceable and the price is right.

Listen to this man. It's certainly worth playing and at $10 you can't go wrong.

R-Type Final is one of two horizontal shmups to own on the PS2, the other is Gradius V.

But R-Type because of all the different ships and weird weapons upgrades. A buddy and me played the hell out of it, just trying to get all the ships. It was grade A fun. :lol

No, Gradius V is one and the other is Einhander. (Yes, I know it's a PS1 game! Big deal.)

As others have said, $10 is a great price for this game, and I cried when I paid $60+ for the import w/ the dog tag. I was absolutely meh about it when I played it the first time, and although the game has tons of unlockables, the core gameplay, pace, and visuals just aren't up to standards set by the series.

The original has a special place in my heart just because I spent so much time with it in arcades (I never thought those graphics would be beat :)), then on the SMS, then on the TG16, etc. Beyond that, R-Type III (SNES) and R-Type Delta (PS1) were my favorites. Final just didn't feel like the proper way for the series to end.

But for $10, go for it. :)

It doesn't seem to have a suitable difficulty level for me. On normal it's so slow that I immediately lose interest, and on the highest difficulty the enemies shoot enough bullets and all but the bosses take like 15 minutes to blow up.

I liked it a lot.
The game is farily long, there's some pretty cool stages, and I really like collecting the 100 or so ships and experimenting with them. Pretty good music, and aside from stage 3, solid graphics. Me likey very much.

As a casual shmups fan, I enjoyed it. I especially liked the atmosphere and the many ships and weapons. It's not that amazing or anything, but at that price, it's definitely worth picking up.

I think R-Type Final is great, and definitely worth picking up for $10 if you're a shoot-em-up fan. As others have pointed out, there are a lot of ships that you can obtain, and they have varied weapons, some of which are very useful in different situations, and some that are just plain fun to use (even if they aren't necessarily the best).

The graphics are crisp, and it looks very good by PS2 standards, although Gradius V has topped it since then. The music's somewhat subdued--nothing memorable, but nothing that gets on the nerves, either.

R-Type Delta was more impactful (especially seeing what they were able to pull off on PS1) and the better game all-around, but it's also very hard to find now. You'll surely want to seek that one out. In the meantime, snap up R-Type Final and enjoy it.

The main problem with Final is the level design is so freakin boring. Especially the long stretches of nothing while the camera pointless pans around. Tons of unlockables, though. It's good, but it's Gradius V's bitch.

I liked it quite a bit. Not as good as the best in the genre, but shooters with production quality like this don't come very often nowadays, so it's worth it just for the wow factor even if you don't enjoy the gameplay 100%. You will definitely enjoy unlocking and using all the crazy unlockable ships - some of them have really imaginative weapons. There are also things in the game that I've never seen in the shooter before, such as different variations of the same level on next playthrough depending on the hidden switches you activated on the previous playthrough. For example, if you read up on End boss on level 2 in the in-game enemy library, it will say that the boss has the ability to control the humidity around it. So if you tinker with this end boss in a certain way, it will[/i ]drastically change the humidity and atmosphere on the 2nd level next time you play it! Make sure to read some FAQ on this as you'll be missing out if you never discover those secret levels and level variations. Level layouts could be better, but end boss designs are very nice.

Also, I would say it's the second or third best looking 3D shooter I've ever seen, and looks absolueltely gorgeous (whoever said it looks sub par, what the hell are you smoking, and what other games of this kind look better to you?). The only for sure better looking game of this kind would be Gradius V, and one could argue with pros/cons for Ikaruga.

And don't forget, this is one of the few shooters to feature animated outlines of a man and woman having sex in the background of one of the last levels. Always a plus!

I thought it was fun while i had it.. I never got too far in it... didn't play it much.. but it was fun.
