Radio Free Nintendo | A Nintendo Podcast for Grownups

I was a little down on Fluidity: Spin Cycle after seeing some of the reviews but Jonny's enthusiasm has peaked my interest in the game once again. I'm also feeling like I really need to pick up Crimson Shroud now considering how much James loved it and how much I love Matsuno. Great episode, I'm looking forward to the GOTY talk!

Episode 321: Guess who's back, back again...

Episode 321 "Return of the Mack" said:
Like Superman in 2006, Jon Lindemann returns to save Earth from... whatever's the opposite of what he does on the show. So we're really happy to have him back, and so will you be! So you and be will. Swoubyillandeo.

Jon didn't have a ton of time to play games during the past few months (that's part of why he wasn't on RFN), but he did make some progress on Super Mario 3D Land. You'll also hear the FPS master's thoughts on Call of Duty: Blacks Ops 2, which still isn't on the Wii U eShop because Activision doesn't like money? I can't imagine what else would explain it. Guillaume follows up with his own take on Paper Mario: Sticker Star, and he bought a new DSiWare game called... actually, just read that phrase over again -- you'll have more fun than he did playing Galaxy Saver. With the segment already running long, James trims his own New Business to a single, but highly worthy game called To the Moon. Jonny slows down just enough to give proper respect to Gunman Clive, the spectacular and highly affordable new 3DS eShop release, and he engages Jon for a quick discussion of Halo 4.

The second segment contains our apparently popular, annual feature on predictions for the new year. We start by recapping some of the stupid bets placed for 2012, though there are a couple of odd zingers and even a few that could still happen, though much later than we'd hoped. You'll even hear a very quick comment from Greg Leahy on his assessment of last year's predictions. From there, we move on into a brand new slate of ridiculous and occasionally provocative claims about what might happen later in 2013. You can bet that Retro Studios is a prominent (some would say perennial) topic, but we also cover the go-to Mario/Zelda/Kart franchises and pitch ideas that might generate some Wii U buzz to fill the post-holiday vacuum. It turned out to be a really fun part of the show, so hopefully you'll find some charm amid the naivety.

We're planning to count down our personal Top 5 Games of 2012 lists next week, but you can always send thoughtful emails to the podcast for future consideration. Look for scheduling info on the live Majora's Mask RetroActive very soon (Jan. 26 is a strong contender), and keep trucking through the game if you still need to prepare. Also, we hope you'll visit and support the guys at Tales of Charity, who are set for a marathon trip through Tales of Symphonia to raise funds for Child's Play. Check out what they're doing at the official Facebook page or on Twitter. The event is running from January 18-20, so don't wait!

regarding the prediction of niche titles and niche publishers going full digital...
sadly, thats already happening in europe. Not just on 3DS but also on WiiU. Code of Princess was only the beginning, Fist of the Northstar is already next in line. And I am sure many will follow as the year progresses. ._.

Great episode and it really felt "complete" having Jon back on there. One topic that didn't come up in the discussion of a potential Metroid Prime on Wii U is what form the control scheme might take. Would Retro move away from the wiimote/nunchuck that most people seem to prefer in order to incorporate the gamepad instead, or would they make both available like in Call of Duty Black Ops II? It seems to me a developer would design the campaign and enemy AI differently depending on which scheme is used. I'm surprised that potential Gamecube HD re-releases or virtual console didn't come up in predictions either.

We just set the date: RetroActive Live for Majora's Mask will take place on Sunday, Jan. 27 starting at Noon Pacific / 3pm Eastern. Hope many of you can join in for this special event! There will soon be a page on NWR to host the audio stream player and provide info on how to call in. We recommend you install and set up Skype in advance -- headset is always best, or use good headphones with your internal microphone. As usual, we'll try our best to get a clean recording of the entire live event for posting to the RFN subscription feed. We may also record a New Business segment earlier in the week to supplement that recording, but not sure yet.

Also, our Top 5's of 2012 turned out to be a great feature. Please look forward to it!

I like how Pandora's Tower is actually getting localized. I read that news right after hearing that part of the podcast. How do you feel about that Jonny? hahahha

That's 6am on Monday morning for me. I'll probably be on the train on my way to work at that time. It's a shame. I love Majora's Mask.

EDIT: I just realised that day will be the Australia Day public holiday! Yay!

Great to hear from Jon again, and I'm glad he's apparently here to say.

Talk of Pandora's Tower localization was strangely ironic.

I love hearing the predictions as well, however unlikely they are.

Episode 322 "You're The Best Around" said:
We start this episode with a very, very short New Business segment (because we were making extra time for the main feature). Jon starts with his first game of 2013 --which he has already finished!-- and it's the wonderful Gunman Clive from the 3DS eShop. You'll probably hear about this game at least once more, because our resident Mega-Fan has yet to discover this hidden gem. Guillaume backtracks to Liberation Maiden, another recent eShop release that he finds to be shockingly devoid of "jank", especially for a Suda 51 joint. James didn't have any New Biz this week (he's been cranking away on Majora's Mask for next week's live show), so Jonny wraps up the segment with a few thoughts on the Fire Emblem: Awakening demo.

After the break, it's time to finally reveal our personal Top 5 of 2012 lists. The rules are very simple, but Jon still manages to break them immediately by padding out his list with a few 2011 games that he didn't play until last year. Otherwise, you'll be quite surprised to hear what games did and didn't make our lists... and the balance of Nintendo platforms may be the strangest of all.

We'd love to see your own Top 5 lists and any thoughts on ours -- jot down an email for us to read on the show! Most importantly, we are quite pleased to announce that RetroActive Live: Majora's Mask will take place on Sunday, January 27 at Noon Pacific (3pm Eastern). Check back soon for a dedicated page that will contain the live audio player and complete information on how to set up Skype and call into the show. You can also interact via chat, which will be on that same page. Either way, we look forward to talking with many of you about this fascinating, controversial Zelda game.

Guillaume may be interessted in ace combat for 3ds. I bought it for 12€ a few weeks ago, it's not as crazy as liberation maiden, but it's packed with content and has some nice jets and missions.

tls over xeno was... surprising to say the least.
well, johnny loves mass effect, so I should've seen that comming.

I guess I know what would've been the topic for the next podcast
to bad it will be live and all about majoras mask... I hope you can make some room for all that crazy stuff that was shown today.

I'd say they have two options:

1. Push Majora's Mask talk to next episode.

2. 3+ hour podcast.

I'm fine with either!

We are recording New Biz and Direct reactions tonight. This will be combined with the live recording for Sunday night's podcast.

By the way, Greg will be on the live RetroActive to talk about Majora's Mask. :-D

We also learned today that our fourth annual PAX East panel will be on Sat. March 23 at 11am. Tickets are already sold out, so I hope you got one early. Special guests are TBD.

Wow, awesome news!

I loved Gui's trolling chapter art for the games of 2012 btw.

Episode 323: Bad Moon on the Rise said:
After months of build-up, it's finally time to dig into The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask in the live version of our RetroActive feature. But first, we attend to some podcast business (the fourth annual PAX East panel and a sale on RFN/Connectivity t-shirts). Then we spend the remainder of this pre-recorded opening segment on analysis of the recent Nintendo Direct. You know, the one about Wii U sequels for Mario, Smash Bros, Zelda, Yoshi, and Xenowhatever, not to mention the latest WTF crossover game out of Japan, Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. James is understandably over the moon about a couple of these announcements, while the rest of us are perhaps a bit more skeptical overall, considering how little was actually shown. Still, it was a good day to be a Nintendo fan, and we headed into the live show with a positive attitude.

The rest of this episode is a recording of our live RetroActive show. It was a great chance to discuss this complex, controversial Zelda game with several callers from the audience. We were also very fortunate to have our old buddy and editor Greg Leahy on the call. There's no shortage of things to say (or argue) about Majora's Mask, and it's no surprise that these two hours turned out to be one of the best RetroActive features in all the years we've done them.

It's well past time to catch up on Listener Mail next week, so please get in your questions and comments for the podcast!

Just wanted to say I like with the person who gave all the love to The Last Story on the GOTY-cast. The game isn't my favorite but it does pacing right.

Sweet, I was waiting on NWR's response to the Nintendo Direct, you know considering they have Nintendo in their name. Listening now.

Has James ever been this happy on a podcast than on RFN323? He was uncharacteristically enthusiastic! I share his positive outlook, though. Can't wait for X and Wind Waker HD!

This is the only podcast I've listened to that correctly identified X as THE highlight of the Nintendo Direct. Great listen!

was there anything else that could've qualified as "the highlight"?

that majoras mask segment is really long, it will probably take me a few days to get through that. I'm looking forward to it.

A few of the other podcasts I listen to seemed to think Wind Waker HD re-release was the big deal.

We interrupt the Super Bowl power outage to bring you this special announcement: RFN 324 is now live.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/33203
We're getting back to normal after a pleasantly tumultuous first month of 2013. New Business is full of new games, as Gui plays the brand new 3DS remake of Ikachan and explains the uneven experience of The Cave on Wii U. Jon finally has his own brush with the Red Ring of Death and struggles with whether to replace his 360 before the inevitable successor launches this fall. Jonny gushes over Level 5's Ni No Kuni and also brings a few positive words about Nintendo Force and the Hyrule Historia coffee table book. James wraps it up with a slightly disappointed report on Gunman Clive, but the glorious demo for Fire Emblem Awakening erases any lingering negativity. For now.

In the latter half, we finally catch up on Listener Mail with a trio of timely queries. This batch starts with a look at Nintendo's most inexplicable decisions, as a defense for the "no-duh" game announcements last week. Next, we take a hard look at the Earthbound situation, as the game is finally coming to Virtual Console in Japan -- does that mean it has a chance in the West, too? Localization is also the topic of the final email, as we consider whether more games could be released on digital services with subtitle-only translations.

Send in your own questions for the next Listener Mail segment -- ping us now! We've also still got new, low prices on the NWR t-shirt store, so order soon if you want to have yours in time for PAX East.

Bom bom da bom: woooooooo

The unification of the tribes was mentioned several times in Ocarina of Time, most explicitly when
you talk to the Deku Tree sprout after finishing the Forest Temple. It's the reason Link lives with the Kokiri: his mother died during that war right after fleeing into the forest with Link, and the Deku Tree took Link in. Further, it's also mentioned in regard to Ganondorf. The reason he's swearing fealty to the king at the beginning of the game is because of the unification.

Tsk, tsk, guys. Like everyone knows that!

Plus all the disturbing crap in the Shadow Temple. The King of Hyrule in OoT was not a very nice man.

Episode 325 "Something About Tingle's Chest Hair" said:
For some people, this time of year is slow for gaming. Don't tell the RFN crew, because we're slammed with games and game-related things to discuss. James starts with this week's big new release, Fire Emblem Awakening, though it's preceded by his own soul-searching about whether to buy the game digitally in face of retail shortages and delays. Jon follows-up on the Hyrule Historia with a deeper look at the book's content, including some disturbing/hilarious looks at the Zelda franchise's more obscure characters and events. Jonny and his in-person guest (we'll leave it a surprise for now) team up for a marathon of Wii U multiplayer gaming that includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, The Cave, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They also played Ikachan (separately), and Jonny shares some wrap-up thoughts on Crimson Shroud, while his guest reports on Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition. A very patient Guillaume concludes our epic New Business with his ambivalence over both Puddle and Rhythm Thief.

The Rayman Legends delay was announced just hours before recording, and some quick-fingered listeners snuck in their flabbergasted emails just in time. We spend a fair bit of time looking at the situation and its larger implications for third-party support on Wii U. Other topics in Listener Mail include the best digital download values and why our usage of Miiverse has faded since launch.

The show closes with a couple of exciting announcements. We're close to opening the next RetroActive poll -- check back here and on our social network outlets for details on that soon. And more importantly, we're expecting to have friend-of-the-show Chris Kohler from Wired's GameLife blog/podcast on the PAX East panel! Until then, send in your own Listener Mail questions to hear them discussed on an upcoming episode. And as always, thanks for listening!

To James: Characters actually do die in older Fire Emblem games. Only the most plot-relevant ones get injured and flee the battle .
