All this buzz about Fire Emblem really makes me want to buy it (and a 3DS). Shame I live in PALland so we don't get it until far later. Was thinking about importing a US 3DS instead since region-locking sucks.

That's exactly what I did and I don't regret it one bit. :)

you will as soon as noe decides to publish a "minor" 1st party titel, and noa, again, decides against it. The upcomming jam with the band 2 would be a good contender for that. also the already available eshop games like picross e and e2. maybe even the monolith 3ds project? but after xenoblade, they probably learned their lesson. Besides most atlus games, there really isn't any reason for an US 3ds. A japanese one on the other hand...
/offtopic

great episode. especially the part about the already dreaded quest of "what could nintendo do to improve 3rd party relations". I think I am more on James and Guillaumes side. I don't think there is anything they can do at this point besides bribing publishers like every other company. But I'd rather have them invest that money into their own software houses instead of giving it to jerk publishers who don't want to support your system.
Kinda feels like inviting someone to your birthday party, while your mom pays them to even show up.

Does 3DS work with WPA wireless and what store does it connect to? Does multiplayer connect to NA or your region?

I have yet to play a multiplayer game on my US 3DS. But I can access the eShop and download SpotPass content (for games like Fire Emblem) without any trouble. You can order NA eShop cards / codes online, too. Play-Asia offers such a service, for example.

I see, I'm giving this some serious thought since I can import 3DS games cheaper than retail. Seriously, region price gouging is the worst.

Looks like we updated past Ondore's bedtime! But I did want to congratulate him on having the first gamer dating question read on Weekend Confirmed. The responses were funny, too!

By the way, the link probably won't survive his post, but please vote here for the next RetroActive feature. We'll play the winning game and discuss on a future episode. Voting ends on 2/28, and the results are very tight as of this posting.

I hope Ys wins because I just finished the updated version on Steam so I'd be able to follow.

My question wasn't even the biggest troll of the night, for the record.

Anywho, down to business...

Episode 326 "A Big Bowl Full Of Smart" said:
It's always a good thing when Billy Berghammer stops in for RFN, and this occasion is special, since he just helped launch Skulls of the Shogun on various Microsoft platforms. That, and the recent hubbub over Fire Emblem Awakening, gave us the idea to do a special episode all about strategy games on Nintendo systems. Unfortunately, Jon was detained at work (he didn't even get to leave until we'd already finished recording), but the remaining quartet walk through over 25 years of this cerebral genre on Nintendo platforms. Along the way, we check out the unreleased 64 Wars, uncover a latent controversy over Pikmin, and learn about the single most Japanese item that James owns.

Got any thoughts on a strategy game we covered, or perhaps missed entirely? Send an email on this topic or any other for a strong chance to be read on an upcoming episode. We also opened the poll for RetroActive #26, returning to the listener's choice format after the Majora's Mask live edition. Head over to the NWR Forums to cast your vote, and be sure to read other posts below the poll if you need any help deciding. We'll announce the winning game in a couple of weeks, so vote now, while you're thinking about it!

Starcraft 64: A bloody miracle

I wonder... if those developers billy talked about loved the snes so much, why don't they release their game for the eshop too? It's not the first time I heard some developers talking about how much the loved nintendo consoles. 17 bit is an indie developer so I see no reason why they couldn't release it for the eshop.

btw, command&conquer was also on n64, I own it and it wasn't that bad ;)

also, sadly you overlooked mech platoon, it was a nice gba real time strategy game.
MechPlatoonscreenshot.jpg

It played kinda like starcraft.

Skulls of the Shogun is by an independent developer, but the game is published by Microsoft. I doubt you will ever see it on a Nintendo or Sony platform. Probably not even iOS.

I don't believe anyone said XCOM is an action-strategy hybrid. We did say it's a simulation-strategy hybrid, referring to the parts between battles.

C&C 64... I had completely forgotten of its existence, and the funny thing is, I now vaguely recall playing it, maybe on a rental. The YouTube videos actually look decent, although the art style is notably changed from other versions of the game. Thanks for bringing that up! I was hoping this episode would cause people to highlight some strategy games we missed, and that has proven to be very much true so far. :)

That was a good episode, thanks. You guys should track down Rebelstar on GBA from Julian Gollop(XCOM).

Also if you have a PS3 Valkyria Chronicles and Rainbow Moon.

Can't believe you missed out Ghost Recon Shadow Wars when talking about modern ones, it's the best strategy for many years :(

Yeah I was pretty shocked no one mentioned that game. Up until Fire Emblem it was far and away with no competition the best game on the 3DS bar none.

Episode 327: In Tents Pro Duck Shon said:
After missing the show last week, Jon comes back in a big way to present a pair of games for New Business, including the lovely To the Moon and Pokemon White Version 2, which also gives us a chance to discuss expectations for Pokemon X/Y on 3DS later in the year. Guillaume suffers through Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 and has ambivalent feelings about Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation on the old 2DS. Jonny finds an unexpected source of emotion in Wii Street U, finally gets to try the external hard drive function, and finishes The Cave with considerable disappointment. James concludes the segment with his final thoughts on Fire Emblem Awakening, though considering his effusive attitude, you'll probably hear a bit more from him at the end of the year.

Part two of the episode collects a trio of recent news stories. We start with a look at the top announcements from last week's Nintendo Direct, including the Year of Luigi, plus a couple of thoughts on the more recent Japan-centric event. Next up are the dismal Wii U sales numbers from NPD in North America, and we try to be constructive with ideas on how Nintendo can turn this ship around as fast as possible. Or maybe it's not even such a big deal? Finally, we share a few more thoughts on the PlayStation 4 announcement, but be sure to also check out the recent NWR roundtable feature for much more on this subject (this one - O).

We'll get back to Listener Mail next week, so be sure to send in yours, and thanks to everyone who's been patient for the last couple of weeks as we've covered other topics. We'll also have a RetroActive winner next week, but there may still be time to get in your vote for this tight race! Also, the organizers of NWR Powered Off are looking for reader mail (questions, feedback, even fan art) so please send them something nice as well.

the monster hunter demo gave me a reason to buy my wiiu prematurely so I guess you are onto something.

I also think you all underestimated the system seller potential of monster hunter. Even if it's multiplattform, this will sell a lot of wiius.

also another thing regarding advertising for the wiiu:
the tv ads in europe clearly seperate the console from the original wii, it is shown as a new and indipendet system.
but that didn't help either, the system is tanking over here harder than anywhere else.

about the lack of multiplattform games: not sure if you read the interview with criterion, but if what they said is true, than developers recieved their final kit somewhere around november. so it would be pretty hard for them to port all games based on weaker/different kits.

It's funny that Jonny was asking for a fresh start with Pokemon when that is exactly what Black and White 1 was meant to be.
In fact, I even that think Black and White are the first games in the main RPG series where you can't catch a Pikachu, just like he was saying he didn't want Pikachu in X and Y.

I really liked the idea of making the E3 demos available on the eShop for a few days. Maybe they could really throw a bone to the diehard by making it available to anyone who bought the deluxe model. Heck, it could be a real boon to the press too by letting them try the demos in a more controlled environment.

And James' idea to get publishers on the eShop sounds good to me too, but I thought the deal publishers got for selling their goods digitally was already a sweetheart deal. I doubt we'll ever hear the specifics of it, but I'm down for more downloadable stuffs.

The one guy complains soooooo much. Geez. He liked the one game at the beginning, the 3-hour one, then he just goes on to pretty much talk about how didn't really enjoy anything else... I'm only an hour in, so hopefully there are games he likes so we don't have to hear him being so down on everything!

Good show. Not sure how it's difficult to be an adventure game fan today. This is a second golden age as far as I'm concerned.

Episode 328: New New Business format, same old Ys.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/33480
Episode 328: Eduifcation said:
This episode starts out with James hosting, as Jonny was held up at work for a few minutes. We also shake up the first half by using a new format for New Business -- each person gets one game, and we go back around for seconds if time allows. Guillaume is the first to try it, and he chooses to begin with Bit.Trip Saga, which was recently on sale in the 3DS eShop. But it's got severe flaws, and he finds it may not even be worth the reduced price. Jonny discovers the madness of Kenji Eno (R.I.P.) by pulling You, Me, and the Cubes off his backlog. James turns his strategy expertise to Skulls of the Shogun (which just got a price drop). Jon addresses the state of Black Ops 2 on Wii U and questions whether the DLC map packs will ever come to Nintendo fans. On the partial second go-around, Gui finishes Dragon Quest VI, and Jonny catches up with Little Inferno.

Listener Mail is always thought-provoking for us, and rarely more than this week's set of questions. First is a follow-up to the Pikmin-as-Strategy topic, leading to some discussion of where Pikmin 3 might take the series. Next up is a damning portrayal of Nintendo's responsibility for Wii U's third-party support... but what is that responsibility, exactly? Last is a return to the "next-generation" term, which leads us into deep into the rabbit hole, covering topics like Nintendo's desired demographic and how overlapping console launches affect demand for new games. As usual, it's heady material and hopefully interesting for all of you! Send in your own questions and topics ratch heah.

Plugs! So many plugs! Make sure you don't miss the new Famicast (subscribers get it automatically) featuring all the latest games and news from our Japan crew. You can also hear the gregarious Jonny on various partner-shows, including a new Radio Trivia, Connectivity (on a new bonus segment about space!), and the special 50th episode of Box Office Poison. Most importantly, be sure to start playing and discussing the winner of our RetroActive poll: Ys Book I&II. It's a very interesting game available on many platforms -- see the official forum thread for more info, and start dropping knowledge for the upcoming feature!

Fantastical

Death Prophet
I'm listening to the podcast from last week.

The snarky guy who laughs really loud is annoying, and is making me reconsider listening to this podcast. I swear he hates everything. The "discussion" of the PS4 conference was horrible, they made it sound like it was a complete disaster or something. Did they even say anything positive?

We did. I think some of it is in the extra-long bonus clip at the end. Some other comments were cut out for time constraints. It was a pretty long discussion, but rather off-topic in an episode that was already running too long. I think we are all mixed on PS4 and want to see more games.

I listened to the podcast in bits with a week between so I must have forgotten the first part - I was referencing the ending I guess because I just listened to it. I'll have to listen to the other part of the podcast again. The ending part in particular was so negative, and it didn't reflect the conference at all, but I guess that makes more sense that it was cut out.

I'm just really tired of the "what can we make fun of at this press conference" attitude. The ending part in particular felt like trying way too hard to try to find little nitpicky things to make fun of / have gripes with. I thought Sony really hit it out of the park for an initial reveal.

Really, I think it's a consequence of Twitter as everyone tries to be more of an asshole than everyone else while events are going on.

I assume you are the person I was talking about. I'm sure you're a great person, I admittedly wouldn't have been as harsh if I knew you were reading this, but I have to say - the extreme snark is off-putting to say the least. I had just listened to the podcast and was frustrated.

EDIT: I just listened to the end again and you guys definitely said positive things, so that was completely wrong. I must have been just annoyed when listening to it, but honestly it's just been my feeling for awhile with the podcast.

I'm the host, Jonny. No idea if I was the one who ticked you off, but it's quite possible! We are all snarky at times -- it's a side effect of talking about this stuff for hundreds of hours. But I hope we never lose sight of the fact that video games should be fun, and that we're lucky to be playing so many great ones all the time. If the show strikes you as overly negative, especially on a consistent basis, that's valuable feedback.

I wonder if you are speaking about the same guy that put me off the show? I dived in for the first - and only so far - time a while back, and there was a discussion about Sonic Racing Transformed. they were pointing out some issues with the game, and some guy kept laughing non stop. It sounded so forced/faked, as the issues weren't that big a deal or funny even. I had to switch off as it was relentless and made it too difficult to listen to.

I keep being tempted to give it another try, but I'm loathe in case my ears are assaulted again :/ I don't like sounding rude when it was only one show, but it was enough to make me think twice.

Really? I never really got that. I hate everyone on a new podcast when I start listening to it too.

The guy shitting on Sonic Racing Transformed's technical issues is James Jones and he has a right to since he's a software developer (designer?).

I really like the new format of New Business. Looking forward to participating in RetroActive. Not yet sure which version of Ys: Book 1 & 2 I'm going to play, though. I own the game on NDS and Wii VC.

I just listened to the current episode. One guy is pretty grating to listen to. I'm not sure who he is, but he went on as if he knows everything, speculated as to why Far Cry 3 isn't on Wii U and blasted Dreamcast. Everyone else was great.

The VC version is great.

The only mention of Far Cry 3 was in a list of games within a listener's email that we read aloud. I did say that Dreamcast was dead after two years and was a failure (in a business context). These are facts. But, by the rules of gamer nostalgia, you can't say anything about Dreamcast except "greatest system ever" without being called a hater.

P.S. I don't know everything, nor claim to. But I do know a lot about Nintendo. Otherwise, why would I have any business being on this show?

Episode 329 "Monumentous Decision" said:
We're sticking with the "round robin" New Business format, and James kicks it off this week with his thoughts on Mass Effect 3, now on Wii U (if you dare). Guillaume follows with the criminally overlooked Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on DS. Jonny caved to his lust for a PS Vita but actually managed to get the system, a fat memory card, and dozens of games for a very reasonable price. Jon checks out Vanquish from Platinum Games, and we ask if it could be the spiritual successor to Mikami's P.N. 03 on GameCube. Coming back around, Gui raves about Crashmo on 3DS, and Jonny quickly recommends a few demos.

We asked for more Listener Mail, and you stepped up! This week's emails cover Virtual Boy on 3DS, NBA 2K13 errata, new control options in Wind Waker HD, and the prospects for Wii U this holiday season. Send your own questions today -- we'll get back to the pile soon!

With a certain convention coming up soon, we've decided to do RetroActive in two parts. We'll first tackle the Book I portion of Ys Book I&II on the next episode (it's actually less than half the game's total length). The next week will be PAX East, so you'll hear a recording of our live panel instead of a normal show. Then, we'll come back and finish RetroActive by playing as far into Ys as we can. If you're playing along, be sure to drop your thoughts on the game into the official forum thread -- we'll pick out some of the best comments to be read on the show!
