I done the not using shampoo/conditioner thing before. Initially it gets really greasy for a couple of weeks, which can feel alarming but after that it eases up and regulates itself after about 6 weeks and your hair feels & looks great. From a maintenance perspective you want to wash it regularly and give the scalp a good degree of agitation and just let it dry naturally (avoid hair dryers). Needless to say you don't want to be using product or anything as that will F things up. From a social perspective, get a short haircut the day before, that way you can ease into it without looking like a grease cast member. You'l be naturally aware that the hair feels greasy during that transition period, but others won't.

Not to, sure why I stopped tbh. think I might get back into that and also maybe try the soap free thing. Though like a few others I think I'll still do the nether regions thing.

I havent used soap and shampoo for about a year now. It's the best choice I ever made. I shower daily, just with water. My hair is never greasy and my skin is 200% better.

My wife never complains and thinks I smell really nice and I can only say this: try it for 2 weeks and you will see.

Only on internet forums is shampoo some sort of head-poison. I've never experienced this sentiment anywhere else in my 28 years on this planet.

Not saying it's some kind of head-poison, just that it's not really necessary.

I've been going without shampoo and only soaping my nether regions (and hands obviously) for the last two years, ever since I saw this thread. Have had great results. Skin and hair looks and feels so much healthier.
I'm in the same boat (started doing it on the 3rd if june, in 2011)

Hair is great, skin is awsome. I still use deodorant though and can't go clubbing without some The One Gentleman from D&G!

Well when you look at the ingredients a lot of times, it does seem a bit odd to want to put all that crap in your hair on a daily basis.

Just reading one here: Aqua (why can't they just write water btw?), Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Glucol Distearate, Zinc Carbonate, Sodium Chloride (so straight up table salt?), Dimethicone, Sodium Xylenesulphonate, Zinc Pyrithione, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Parfum, Sodium Benzoate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Hydrochloric Acid, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Magnesium Carbonate Hydroxide, Sodium Oxide, Magnesium Nitrate, Sodium Polynaphthalenesulfonate, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, CI 42090, Methylisothiazolinone, CI 17200

That's from a Head & Shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo. I'm sure there are other shampoos with less weird ingredients though.

Edit: I'm not saying shampoo is poison btw. Just that there are a lot of weird ingredients in many of them.

Are you using really hot water when you shower? For me, this stuff has only worked when using really, really hot water.

As hot as I can get it without burning my head, after a rinse through with warm... unfortunately our shower pressure is really bad, so its HOT and no pressure, or cold and heaps of pressure...hard to get the balance right for any regular "method".

Hmm.. Might have to give this a go for my hair. My scalp is often itching and I can get quite a lot of dandruff.

I hope this will help.

Been probably over a year, no shampoo, no soap (except on my hands after I handle anything particularly nasty). Hair, scalp and skin are healthier than they've ever been. No change in how people perceive me to smell, I still get the handful of "you smell really good" comments, but then I've pretty much always worn the same aftershave/deodorant combo and that's not changed. My natural smell after working out seems to have improved, according to my girlfriend. Specifically she says I don't smell like I've been working out (mind you, my diet has also improved considerably, which could also have an effect).

I shower daily in water that ranges from pretty cold to fairly warm. Recommend that if you've had persistent scalp problems in particular throughout your life, you at least give going shampoo free a shot. Oh, and my hair is reasonably short - a few inches long. Not sure how it would hold up if it was much longer, although my brother seems to be doing well on the same "program" and he has shoulder length hair.

Another tip - if you have patches of skin that get persistent dryness or flakiness, I've had great success with just massaging in a couple of drops of pure jojoba oil after I shower. The areas immediately either side of my nose used to get very irritated in the winter, but a tiny bit of that oil and the problem is long gone. Supposedly it's the closest naturally occurring oil to the variety our bodies produce to regulate skin dryness.

I earlier mentioned that stopping Head and Shoulders got rid of my dandruff. It came back for a bit during the winter, so now I used H&S once a week, a weaker shampoo here and there, and water every other day. Works pretty well. I can't JUST do water for long periods because my hair gets too greasy and looks bad after a few days.

I've stopped using shampoo (again), and aside from the greasy results, I can make my hair look like this.

Besides, any sign of dandruff is gone. :) I just use my fingertips to clean my head and voila.

This is probably the coolest result for me while doing this. I've never been able to do that before and have it look good without product. Now it looks like this overnight. Feels great.

I also highly recommend the oil cleansing method for those with acne prone skin.

Yeah, my hair is similarly easily shaped too. For my entire life getting my hair to "behave" has been a chore, particularly when it gets a little long, but since going shampoo-less my hair is not only thicker and more healthy but incredibly much more manageable. It pretty much looks good on it's own now with very little work after a shower.

Like I've said before, it's been an amazing transformation. If I hadn't tried this myself I'd have never believed it.

So, you guys are saying to skip the shampoo and just wash your hair with water? Because I've been having some dandruff and scalp problems lately, and the results are hit/miss with shampoos. This might be worth a try.

How long's your hair?

I've been doing this for a YEARS, never going back, but it's tough if you're a woman with longer hair or use a lot of product/spray, etc.

No worries, it's short. I don't really use products for my hair, except for some moisturizer.

It would be nice to not have to use Shampoo, if it really works. This would cut the process in half.

Alright, I'm having a hard time with the hair thing.

Can some people who haven't used shampoo in a while post pictures of their hair so we can see how oily it is?

I feel like my hair would get pretty gross without using shampoo.

It does at first because shampoo (which is way too harsh) strips your scalp and hair of sebum (the oil) so your sebaceous glands over produces sebum to make up for the loss. It takes several weeks for it to regulate and return to normal. By then, your hair should no longer be oily, unless you have a separate condition.

Where do you guys live? I've been using a tea tree oil deoderant and i don't think it works great but have gotten a few compliments... I live in Sydney though and our 'winter' has just finished and I'm not exagerating when i say it hasn't rained since mid July and has been 24 degrees n blue skies everyday. Its great but summer is coming, its gonna be high 30's for months ... I'm curious if you guys pull this off in a humid or hot climate?

You should try it, but don't puss out when it starts getting greasy. It's making up for the years of you nuking it with chemicals.

Just let the hair get rough and find ways to style it so it works.

A few months into it, you can see it gets matted a bit at first:

Recent, with some pomade in:

DO NOT USE GEL. Use a natural pomade or something similar.

Do you guys still condition? I'm thinking about giving this a shot, but I don't know if this calls for nothing but water to clean my hair or if I should still use conditioner.

Yes. Most of here use deodorant too. And use soap to wash our hands after going to the toilet, before eating and preparing food.

It's just that we limit soap and shampoo, some only use soap in nether regions.

I tried this for a couple months a while ago, but my hair always felt really greasy. I thought it would just be for the first few weeks, but it never got better. Plus it didn't help get rid of my dandruff.

The guy said about 2 weeks without washing his hair the oil dried up. Maybe the scalp produces more oil to compensate for the shampoo drying it out.

My brother did that. It was pretty much like that. I guess no washing his hands after shitting/pissing though then? I'd try it, but I don't want to go through weeks of oily hair before it balances itself. I don't use soap on my face ever, and it goes pretty well. I'm always complimented on nice skin.

I haven't used shampoo or soap in 2 years and every girl that I'm with say that I always smell great. I do wear deodorant though; so I technically didn't go all the way.

I never use any deodorant or perfume all of my lifetime, I never feel that I need to use it and since half of my life I grew up in outback I really dislike those stuff.
As for soap, I've been rarely use it except when I need to clean something that hard to wash like grease, dirt, or paint.

Surprisingly many people around me said I smell good all the time, I'm not really sure if the result would be the same with different people but I think it worth to try.

Not using deodorant is not going all the way lol. This method is specifically about showering without soup and shampoo.

So I was having problems with shampoos and getting itchy dry scalp and it was becoming super uncomfortable no matter which brand I used. I decided to give the no shampoo thing a try for a week and a half. Although skeptical at first I gotta say it works. I am on day 5 and my scalp doesn't bother me at all, m hair isn't oily like I thought it would be (it looked like it for one day) and my hair feels more full and thick and there is no smell problems ( I asked a few people) and they said it was fine.

I won't go without soap though as for my job and stuff I wouldn't want to not wash but I am gonna stick this no shampoo thing out for a few more days to see how it turns out. So far it seems fine and most of my fears like smell have all but been relieved.

I've been doing this for about a year. I've always had issues with my skin just being uncomfortable, itchy and irritated to the touch. I still get this partially, but on the whole my skin feels much better. I also smell exactly the same as I did before because I used unscented soap and shampoo anyways.

Disappointed I didn't try this earlier in life, would have saved a decent chunk of money.

Been trying no shampoo for about a week and it does feel thicker but I need to shower everyday or else it gets pretty oily. My dandruff also has gone into overdrive. If I shake my hair it legit snows. Does this eventually subside or with someone with a lot of dandruff like me gonna have to use dandruff shampoo for this?

Don't know for sure, but speaking for myself I used to have terrible dandruff problems. I used Selson Blue exclusively for most of my life because it was the only shampoo that could keep my dandruff under control.

When I stopped using shampoo it took my hair about a month to stabilize, and during that month my dandruff was bad. I fought it by keeping my hair very, very short and washing it every day or even twice a day. After four weeks though my dandruff has all but gone away completely. I have noticed that if my hair gets kind of long now, and if I skip a day without showering (it's happened on a few cross country Harley trips) then I get a bit of dandruff back again, but nothing like what I used to. As long as I shower daily and scrub my scalp my dandruff is gone.

So yeah yours may go away once your hair "heals", only way to tell for sure is to stick it out and see for yourself.

Yeah, I had dandruff problems for years. I just make sure to scrub as it exfolliates your scalp skin and dandruff is no longer a problem.

I need to try this. There was a time where I stopped shampooing for long stretches, never went full out though. I don't wash everywhere with soap either... only the important parts.

I'm really curious if this method would get rid of my keratosis pilaris. Fucking annoying and ugly.

I tried this for a couple of weeks and my hair was pretty good. I have really long hair that's a bit curly and usually need conditioner, but I would just make sure I combed it before the shower and it was fine.
I can't remember why I stopped, maybe I will try it again.

I don't use deodorant, but if I don't wash my armpits with soap when I shower they tend to smell as soon as I sweat, even if just a little, which can happen very soon after the shower.

Is this normal? Anybody just use soap on their armpits and groin?
