Random Internet dude goes over a year without using soap/shampoo. Surprising results

I don't use shampoo anymore, I use showergel ony my body though so I don't smell funky, but most of the time it's just warm water and a spritz of cologne afterwards.

My hair used to be greasy and fat as fuck, it's not as much anymore since I stopped.

I'm thinking about going off shampoo. There will be a rough period because of the thickness of my hair, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

I already go without soap most of the time. I still wash my crotch and ass, but other than that I rarely soap anything else. I'll soap fully on occasion, maybe 4-5 times a month. Skin irritation has gone down significantly. I used to get bacne pretty bad, especially on my shoulders (big clusters of zits). I have almost no bacne since cutting down on soap a couple years back. I've noticed that I still get it if I take long, hot baths, however. I guess that dries the fuck out of my skin.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. My hair is fairly thick so unless I put something in there it's all over the place like an unraveled Q-tip.

I have been off shampoo for about 6 months, and its great I haven't had dandruff in ages and my hair isn't super dried out. It kinda regulates itself. Can't go without body wash though or deodorant.

Also, on the topic of deodorant: use baking soda.

Shit you not, it keeps the pits fresh.

How long does that last? My current deodorant can last 2 days when applied.

It's been one year, haven't had one person tell me that I stink. Dandruff free hair, no more ashy skin.

Get at me.

People who don't use shampoo at all - you still wash your hair every day?

For example, I rinse my hair in the shower every day but try to not shampoo for 2-3 days at a time to reduce my dependence on shampoo.

Do you mean wash with baking soda while in the shower, or pat down the pits with baking soda after showering?

After. Too much can irritate the skin, though.

Your mileage may vary. Some people say they need to do it a couple times a day, others are good for a day or two. I find it lasts a solid day.

Haven't used shampoo in weeks. Just rinse in the shower every day. Hair looks better and is more manageable.

^ Are you balding? Hot water for head is no good I hear.

The cold showers sound bat shit insane. Fuck how are you supposed to do that in chill seasons...

I'll consider doing this when I take my 2 week vacation.. Lol.. I bet eating clean is a huge part of the equation.

I'm the opposite. I rarely use shower gel or soap. I don't find it makes any difference whether I do or don't. I shower once or twice a day and use deodorant, aftershave etc.

When I was a teenager I found using soap or face wash tended to cause spots, so I just started using water and I didn't really have any spot problems from then on. I do shave most days though, so I suppose that 'exfoliates' much of my face. I still wash my hands with anti-bac soap.

Don't think I could go without shampoo though. Or deodorant.

just read first and last page but:

surely he must have used soap for cleaning his hands?
to not use soap while cleaning hands sounds dumb and dangerous

also this baking soda thing, does it work in the crotch as well?
need something anti-persperant down there now that it gets warmer outside

not using shampoo, does it require a daily routine of showering to keep the grease away. If I go a few days without showering my hair gets really greasy.
Do you spend longer time in the shower not using shampoo and soap. Maybe scrubbing more with a sponge and combing through your hair in the shower?

Do you wet shave without any product at all?

of course we all wash our hands, anything else would be yucky and unhygienic. Ignaz Semmelweis knew what he was on to in that respect.

I have a realy quick shower every morning, no excessive scrubbing or anything .
My hair feels no different if I skip a day or two while camping.

and I use normal shaving cream to to shave, not using anything irritates my skin too much and makes it itchy.

Yeah, I take daily showers, sometimes more than one depending on what I've done in the day.

I'm almost at a year now of no soap (mostly) and no shampoo, both skin and hair are better than ever in my life and I smell good even when sweaty and active. This is one of the best changes I've ever made in my life, wouldn't go back if someone paid me to.

Also, Arm and Hammer's basic deodorant is just as good. It's basically baking soda in stick form.

Thanks, I'm going to try this.

Been doing this for a couple weeks now. No real difference in my hair. I make sure to rinse it well with water the shower. Next step is to wash it with cold water...not ready for that yet.

I've been going without shampoo and only soaping my nether regions (and hands obviously) for the last two years, ever since I saw this thread. Have had great results. Skin and hair looks and feels so much healthier.

This definitely works for hair. No shampoo/conditioner makes your scalp go nuts for awhile, then it balances out a bit, and after a few weeks you're better than you've ever been. As soon as I use shampoo, it's back to managing dandruff. I used shampoo while on vacation last week and it was terrible, I'm still dealing with the return of my scalp itching and moderate dandruff.

These products are a sham...

I haven't tried this with soap yet. You gotta at least wash your balls, right? I don't have skin problems so I haven't considered not soaping up.

I soap my balls and dick. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting my dick in a girl's mouth if I hadn't. But thats the only area I soap. And thats the only reason I do it.

Might be TMI but if you have an adjustable shower head you could aim it at your nether region or buttocks.

Along with my armpits, that's the only place I apply soap as well. Before, when I was applying soap to my entire body, my eczema would really act up and dry out my skin really badly. That stopped after I switched to my current method.

I still use shampoo and deodorant, but I never had problems with those so I don't see any reason to quit using them.

I've gotten to the point where I only use shampoo every other day now. My hair and scalp have been much better. I still shower everyday.

I have a friend that hasn't used soap in years, and uses apple cider vinegar occasionally to clean his hair. Maybe some coconut oil to condition. He has awesome hair and no b.o. You have to stick with it for a few months to let your body adjust.

I didnt realize how unique this behaviour was. I have been doing the no soap thing for years. I Shampoo once every 3-4 days, deodorant in the pits after every shower, and always shower at least twice a day - more if i worked out. I do exfoliate with a washcloth because in grown hairs suck.

Edit: i take hot showers and sometimes baths. I have a thick ass head of hair but my family has a good record of thick hair super late into life.

I've met a couple people recently that made me think about this, and read some posts in this thread to confirm it. Is there a natural smell that society looks over? Do opposite genders take more notice? And do different ethnicity's make a difference? I met a Turkish girl that I was really attracted to, but part of it was her smell. It was different, and I could tell it wasn't from any shampoo's or soaps. Of course we know about pheromones and all that, but not exactly how powerful they can be sometimes.

However, there are people out there with just a bad funk, who should shower more often. I had a friend where his odor would actually infect things. He gave me some of his stuff and it took me at least a year to get the smell out.

Anyway, I'm on week 3 of no soap. I noticed that I have less body acne, though it wasn't exactly an issue anyway. I can't go without shampoo for more than 3 days, since it just makes me feel bad and greasy after that. And I don't have a significant other to tell me about smell, but I haven't heard anything negative yet either. So far so good I guess. I'll switch to warm water instead of hot, and maybe that will do something. I still use deodorant of course, wash hands, etc, that everyone else here does.

Humans don't have pheromones. We do not have the brain region necessary for it. Some evidence indicates they could maybe possibly be something that kind of sorta works in the same vein, but the jurry is out.

Haven't used soap in years, my skin thanks me for it. Shampoo on the other hand I just can't do without, my 19-yr old hormones give my hair more oil no matter what -.-

I virtually never use soap at all. I do shampoo when I shower. I wonder if I should try not shampooing when I shower for a few weeks to see the results.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
I'm still doing this, is anyone else?

I've not used it for well over a year now. Still doing great, if anything I get more compliments on my hair than I used to.

EDIT: Just saw that question 2 posts up. I use wax/putty in my hair, not sure if it's counter-productive to not shampooing but I've not noticed any difference.

I tried this for awhile, however only with shampoo. My hair got too greasy and unmanageable. So now I shampoo my hair once a week, because it is easier to handle when it is dry.

Only on internet forums is shampoo some sort of head-poison. I've never experienced this sentiment anywhere else in my 28 years on this planet.

I still use soap on body, don't use shampoo on hair. Hair looks and feels great and is very healthy. Doesn't smell at all

Been a bit over year now.

This is what I use. The Arm and Hammer Essentials. It doesn't have a bunch of weird shit in it that makes my armpits feel weird and sensitive, and it has baking soda so it works well for odor.

I have to admit to not reading the entire thread, but just thought i would say I have been testing the no shampoo thing for...i stopped counting, but its been around 2 months at the least this time (I have tried a couple of times without any success) and its working well this time for me.

Have not been tempted to try the no shower gel thing just yet but the hair/shampoo thing is definitely working.

Are you using really hot water when you shower? For me, this stuff has only worked when using really, really hot water.

I've been doing it for over a year now, no shampoo at all and very little soap (mostly hands and private parts only, unless I get engine grease on me). It's been working absolutely fantastic for me. Honestly the results have been so much better than I ever anticipated. My head itch and scalp irritation that I've had my entire life is gone. My hair is so much more full and healthy now. My skin is so much healthier than it used to be. I actually smell better than I used to, it's even more pronounced when I am exercising and sweaty, I've kind of developed a natural scent that I've truthfully gotten several compliments on from both complete strangers and my girlfriend. People wanting to know what cologne I am wearing or what soap I use.

It's been nothing short of a revelation for me, and I'll never go back to "conventional" bathing conceptions. There is literally no benefit to it for me, no reason to go back.
