Weird shit. My old boss' husband used to not use shampoo but for different reasons. He believed it was some sort of scam and that it was somehow tied into controlling the mass population through chemicals. He believed this and went into detail over why he believed it. He goes on a lot of weird websites too. Saw his laptop once and he was on some government conspiracy site ordering books on the topic.

why are people assuming this guy stopped showering. he plainly says he still showers and if you read the original post he said he finds that showering every other day (which is what i do anyway) seems to yield the best results.

My hair use to be like that and it used to get greasy really quickly so I only had a couple of days where it was in a decent condition until I stopped using shampoo/conditioner very week.

I'm not convinced. I've gone several days without showering when I've done a few things away from civilization. Every time, I feel like a mass of walking putrid funk after about the 4th day and cant wait to scrub the oils off my body.

VanMardigan

has calmed down a bit.
My hair stinks after less than a week with no shampoo and only water. I applaud his experiment, but I can't/won't be doing that. I think eating healthier will have much more positive life-lengthening, health-improving effects than simply not using shampoo and soap.

I know a lot of people who advocate not using shampoo/conditioner and see good results, they just rinse thoroughly with water. But I cannot see it being healthy to never wash your body with soap, especially if you sweat or do any physical activity...

He showers regularly.

Theres a large difference between not showering period and not using soap.

Personally I only shampoo my hair on the regular, but I typically only soap up before going out.

Since when is sweat "unhealthy"?

Regardless, water does a fine job of getting sweat and dirt off..

Have you tried giving up the shampoo and just sticking with conditioner? Lots of people on the LJ longhair community seem to prefer that.

This is the problem. At least according to the theory (not saying it actually works) 4 days puts you in the limbo period. It takes a few weeks to a month for your body to naturally adjust.

Problem is wtf do you do in the mean time while your try and get to the point where your body has deregulated itself post not using all if the chemicals.

You know, I thought about that after I posted. I cant see how just running water over your body would do any good though? I've done just that during some excursions and the water simply evaporates off of your body, leaving you with the same nastiness you're carrying around.

Do you do any physical activity? Exercise? Yardwork?

I'd imagine you'd need to scrub in some manner in order to exfoliate your skin.

Maybe try a washcloth, sans soap. You still may need to rub your skin down to get all the nastiness off. Doesnt mean it necessarily requires soap though.

I have for years fought with dry scalp/dandruff related problems. When I was younger it seemed like it stemmed from the usage of shampoo, so for almost two years I completely stopped using shampoo and instead just scrubbed as best as I could with water alone. There was really no improvement in the condition of my scalp. Essentially what happened is that I got pretty bad breakouts/acne (not terrible, but worse, and I can't really accurately say how much of it is related to my age that time). My hair felt terrible, always looked greasy and felt disgusting. So I went back to shampoo. About a year ago I decided to try dandruff shampoo again and got some Head & Shoulders and my dandruff problem is essentially gone.

I think the problem is that I get some sort of eczema or other skin irritation on my scalp, face, and chest where there is hair, along with terrible dry skin. For instance, if I shave regularly, I have incredibly moist, healthy skin on my face, but if I stop for a week I get dry, flaky, itchy, and irritated skin on my face. For my chest I have actually taken to washing my chest hair with the shampoo and it's the only thing since I started getting the eczema that has actually done anything to stop it from itching/becoming inflamed. I should probably go to a dermatologist, but as far as I know the only thing they'll give you is creams and that would feel terrible while wearing a shirt, I'd imagine.

Somewhat related, if I don't wash my face every day I will start to break out again. There's a huge difference between them. Back in my college days, between terms I'd pretty much really let myself go. I wouldn't wash my face daily because I was waking up later and it essentially interrupted my routine (although I did always shower) and going for a month at a time without properly washing essentially lead to having terrible skin.

Anyway, yeah, I don't really buy this article. At least not for me personally.

But taking the whole oil/water dont mix type thing. Wouldn't you need some type of catalyst to break down the oils instead of cloth? I know that if I have a greasy dish in the sink and I just run a cloth over it, the grease is still there until I break it down with some Dawn soap.

If youre not capable of scrubbing your own body down, try to get in at a nursing home.

Seriously, if your body oils are akin to kitchen grease buildup after a day of activity, just use some damn soap.

Normal sweat "griminess" can easily be done away with a little hot water and rubbing (even with bare hands).

Would this logic also apply to tooth brushing.

When not leave the normal flora in the mouth and let nature take care of it. And not disturb it by adding chemicals ie mouth wash, tooth paste etc.

I might just try it though. Using soap on a skin would not be for smell. Because you are still taking a shower and cleaning your sweat and neutralize the PH. Smell of a soap would not even last that long at all to make any difference.

Hence, stooping using soap has nothing to do with smell, if that would be your concern.

Wow. So hostile. I'm merely trying to rationalize the thought in this thread that soap is evil. Sorry to bother you dirty boy.

When you shower, how long and is your water hot or cold?

Did people eat/drink as much corrosive stuff way in the past?

My hair starts being greasy after 2 days without shampoo and feels really great after a good soapy shower, it's kinda hard to believe his story

Purell ?

I need to use antibacterial soap to eliminate odors, that no soap trick not gonna work on me. Even after lathering up once with regular soap, I can still feel I'm not completely clean.

yup, is not needed. Just wash with water.

why? you just smear smelly lard (lol) stuff over your body. What good does that do?

The only things i really wash/ desinfect with soap are my hands.

I wouldnt say soap is evil, just not absolutely necessary.

Personally, other than smell right out of the shower, there's no difference for me using soap or not.

Shampoo OTOH, my hair does tend to feel greasier when I dont shampoo it, so I do everyday.

But honestly, if you havent tried it, why not? And dont let a psychological hurdle get in your way ;)

Essentially I take 10-20 minutes in the shower, depending on how tired I am, and it's typically hot the entire time. In the past month I've been trying that scottish shower stuff though.

Actually, the eczema on my chest is more from sweating than anything.

Hotter showers do tend to aggravate dry skin last I knew.

It's not a secret that soap is incredibly bad for your skin's health.

I try to keep using soap to a minimum, especially when washing my face my face I won't use soap, and have always had baby smooth flawless skin.

I do wash my hair with shampoo though, good shampoo won't wreck your hair (unless you use it every day) and it's a pain to clean greasy hair without it.

My friend doesn't use shampoo, he just gives his hair a good rinsing when he showers.

His hair is never greasy and it's also strong enough so that he can move it around and stick parts of it straight up and it stays where he puts it.

Though he claims there's a 1-2 week process of looking like a terrible mess before your hair settles down.

That may be the case. But it also gets a shitton worse when I go camping away from showers for a week or two. Also, the dandruff shampoo makes it a ton better.

Actually, shampoo rips off the natural oils that your hair has that are supposed to protect it and keep it from getting dirty. Like I said above, if you go a few weeks your hair will basically go back to being normal.

I never use soap. I recently told my siblings this and they couldn't believe it. People think way to highly of it.

Edit: and I lift 5 times a week.

That is a valid point. More acidic drinks can cause erosion of the enamel and more prone to the caries. But, just like our GUT, there is a normal flora that comes to an equilibrium, even though our diet has changed drastically though out time.

Our Salivia controls the PH to neutralize the acidic. So it works on a positive or negative feedback system. My introducing external factor ie mouth wash/soap, technically you are eliminating your normal feedback.

An example would be someone who is in a hormone therapy. Your body has a feedback, it detects certain levels and pending on level it would secrete the hormone. But, if you are supplementing the hormone then your own body would stop producing it and the our pretty much hypotrophy that system.

Interesting concept. I would say you can judge the success by examining people in tribal area or 3rd world communities.

I started doing this years ago. I only use soap when I'm really dirty(and of course handwashing).

Short hair takes care of the shampoo.

The worst part is that I have incredibly oily hair and skin, but it's still dry. When I have a beard, I have to rinse my face clean every few hours because it gets so oily, and yet the skin is still dry and flaky. It's like a damn nightmare. I just glad there are products out there that make it all manageable. I honestly think the reason my face is fine when I shave, but not when I have a beard, is because I get it cleaner with all of the shaving products and it's easier to wash. This whole thing just seems like it's a super conditional, not for everyone type of deal.

So basically, he rinses himself, not wash.

I see this all the time in public restrooms where people douse their hands in water for 2 seconds without using soap and call that washing their hands.

Maybe if you grew and killed all your own food.

Completely different thing we're talking about here.
